Paulo Filho Vows to Make Chael Sonnen Pay on Three-Round Installment Plan

(Filho declares: “The Americans’ method of cutting weight is much better than ours.” No shit. Video courtesy of Sherdog.)

Paulo Filho apparently takes some of Chael Sonnen‘s post-fight and pre-rematch remarks very personally. What’s ironic is that he talks in this video about what a difficult time he had cutting weight for their first fight, which resulted in him being somewhat off his game, but says he is in much better shape this time around. That’s an unfortunate choice of words, considering the way things worked out.

It’s also ironic that while Filho criticizes Sonnen for not acting like a professional after their first bout, he shows up seven pounds overweight for a title defense. As talented as Filho is, how does he expect to be taken seriously if he can’t make weight to defend his own belt? It’s piss-poor timing, considering the WEC middleweight division is set to be absorbed into the UFC soon. And what’s Dana White’s stated position on guys who can’t make weight, especially for title fights? He’s against it. Really against it.

Besides the embarrassment of the whole charade, there’s also the financial cost to Filho, who’ll be giving up 25% of his purse to Sonnen. He isn’t happy about that either, telling Tatame:

“That guy (Sonnen) will pay dearly my 25% (purse) inside that octagon on those three rounds: 10% on the first, 10% on the second and the rest at the third.”

Sounds like Filho’s got it all figured out, mathematically speaking. But what if the fight ends in the first? Then Sonnen gets away with that last 15% for nothing. Didn’t think of that, did you Paulo?

I use to be a fan of Paulo Filho's. I was actually going to be rooting for him in this fight. However I am at a loss for words with everything that transpired. He' a mess...
That being said, I think that the performance from Chael Sonnen was almost as pathetic. Yes he won the match but his performance was poor at best. Neither men deserve the belt at this time in my opinion.

Paulo is an overweight, no-talent, druggie fuck. What is with all these Brazilian Mofo's training with Machida who think they can be all "elusive" and shit and win fights? Being elusive Fihlo means punching, THEN getting out. Not just "not fighting" at all. Add to that you missing weight because you have no respect for yourself or your opponent? Next time you get out the ouija board, the answer to anything you ask is going to be "LOSER". So go back to your Brazilian flophouse, imagine what it really is to be a professional MMA fighter, and cry your fat head to sleep on you giant pillow. I just wish my son had let loose with the leather and jacked you up old school while you were in the middle of your mushroom trip, you talentless Kailb Starnes mofo. Of course, talentless and Kalib Starnes together is an oxymoron, but you might be on a drug trip and unable to understand simple sentences, so I just wanted to spell it out for you. Enjoy your UFC contract on the UFC fantasy forums Paulo.

I really don't see how it should not be a title fight. It makes sense if the challenger does not make weight, but the defender? The defender has the advantage so if the challenger beats him, then he should get 2 belts...

Thanks for the link Safta. Paulo seems to be shrugging off missing weight and costing someone a title shot. It is a shame of Chael that he does not get that shot because of someones negligence. If Chael wins he should get the title anyway. What is the big deal it is getting absorbed in a couple of months.

Sonnen has a few words for Filho here.

I am getting so sick of this Punk Paulo Filho. I Arm-bared my laptop and It tapped and spoke with more dignanty and honor than this idiot.
I love guys like this...they live in their own oblivious bubble stocked with a lifetime supply of arrogance and grandiousity. They see life through its warped lens and can't reconize the reality the rest of us share.
Here are the facts: Sonnen was spanking Filho throughout their first encounter. He was caught in a dangerous armbar that would have broken his arm, yet he did not tap; the ref did stop the match.
Sonnen has been a sport about the whole thing. He simply made his case in the cage and went on with his life. somehow this upset Filho.
Secondly, Fihlo disrespects WEC, Zuffa, DAna, his opponent, and all his fans with his "7 Pound Sin" and then goes on to say he will make his opponent pay for his fight purse cut....what a dumbass.
Sonnen had a great chance to beat this guy tonight, and now even if he does, its worth Fuck-All !!! Thanks Paulo Filho, you bring such a light to the sport.

I want to know where Anderson Silva comes up with this Filho character as a top MW. The guy's not a middleweight unless he can make 185. He might be a relatively decent 205er. Put him in with James Irvin.

I cant stand Filho....All his talk of respect, respecting the fight, the sport and your opponent is horseshit. Coming in 7 lbs over and AGAIN not giving Sonnen a shot at title. Last time he was crying and taking too much dope.

Then again, from the looks of where the interview took place.....It looks like it was shot at a Brazialian crackhouse. I know Filho isnt a top paid fighter, but looks like the vid was taken in a rundown slum house.

Dr. said it best. I can only add that Filho seems to be still suffering symptoms of depression. I'm referring to his inability to provide direct answers to the questions asked. He begins to ramble and digress. (Was he paid to endorse the
Gracie family to the extent that he does in this interview?) He didn't even answer the question about his weight for this fight compared to his first bout against Sonnen.
TUF Guy- November 4, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Anyone that thinks that this guy could beat me in any kind of fight is delusional.

Hardly "The Champ"... because he effectively removed the title from the fight. Filho should be thinking about Sonnen making him pay for wasting what was supposed to be a title shot - not the other way around. All the effort and time put into training? Fuck me, I'd be furious. It's a little different when the challenger for the title fails to make weight and removes that chance, but the fucking belt holder???

Plain and simple. YOU fucked up. YOU didn't make weight - not EVEN fucking close. That's not professional or behavior from a "Champ". Then you talk about making Sonnen pay for your fuck up.

I hope Sonnen beats his ass raw.
tallsforeverybody- November 4, 2008 at 4:51 pm
The Champ should get stripped if he can't make weight...that's an embarassement.
Imbecile- November 4, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Filho looks like a shell of the former monster he was in Pride.

Like a big, flabby, steroid-free shell...

He's probably been training with Anderson, and there other good buddy Machida, for the amount of Hype this fight is getting I'm predicting an epic amount of ilusiveness from the champ.

My money for fight of the night goes to Lil Evil and the Leonard "The Coke Mule" Garcia.
