Penn vs. Sanchez: This Is What Domination Looks Like

If you watched last night's UFC event, you already know that BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez was one of the most lopsided five-round fights in UFC history. But exactly how bad did things get for the hapless challenger? According to FightMetric, Sanchez threw 108 strikes at Penn, and only landed eight of them. Seriously. Eight, the whole fight. That's a 7% success rate. By comparison, Penn was able to touch Sanchez 150 times out of 214 tries, for a remarkable 70% success rate. Compounding his failure, Sanchez also went 0/24 on his takedown attempts. (Fun fact: Penn hasn't been successfully taken down by a lightweight since Takanori Gomi, six years ago. But hey, kudos to Sanchez for trying anyway.)
Of course, you could also just look at the above photo to understand what a bad situation the Nightmare found himself in at the FedExForum. Allow Dana White to explain what you're looking at:

Seeing Diego messed up like that along with Clay Guida getting messed up like he did made my night.
GetUpAndKill Says:
Wow, those fight stats are insane. The 2009 Andy Wang Award for failed gameplan is proudly awarded to Diego Sanchez. I would like to see an after photo of Diego stitched up, too see what the end result looks like.
GetUpAndKill Says:
BJ is....nevermind.
meanfinger Says:
i bet guida met up with sanchez later that night after the both of them had a few drinks and said, "i'll show u mine if u show me yours."

BJ is the man...plain and simple!
Diego Sanchez Says:
(while doing cartwheels whit my vagina face) YES! YES! YES!
King_KP Says:
I think that was probably the most dominant performance I have ever seen...by round 3 I just felt bad for diego, his corner just kept telling him the same damn thing over and over.
mmacanada Says:
Diego is not even in the same league. That was bigger beating than gsp put on penn. Could you imagine is Sanchez stayed at 170 and maybe fought gsp? Though with that cut on his forhead, maybe id rather take a beating on the ground from gsp.
Diego Sanchez Says:
And it worked! I won! YES! YES!
FowlBeast Says:
B.J. knew Sanchez's only weakness was his severe allergies so he greased his gloves with peanut oil.
steampunk22 Says:
Good fight, good for BJ.
Bugo Schmidt Says:
Diego would have won if he went for the single leg.
mthomas Says:
Hmm..curious that he wasn't shouting "Yes, Yes, Yes!" AFTER the fight.
Gotta give it to Sanchez though, he is a warrior. He was simply outmatched here.
Sneaky Pete Says:
@meanfinger:
A few drinks? I don't think Diego could have gotten a shot of PATRON past that lip!
PELF Says:
Seriously, will everyone keep naming Fedor up there in the best pound-for-pound fighter top? What BJ did was DESTROY one of the best 155rs in the world. Fedor had an hell of a scare in the first round against a Brett, ffs.
Anderson Silva and BJ Penn are BY FAR above everyone else. GSP is almost there.
Turd Furgeson Says:
Now BJ is gonna slowly work his way up dominating the champ in each weight class until he chokes Brock lesnar. Its only a matter of time. If you don't believe it, you hug the nuts of who ever you think can beat him. Idiot.
Sneaky Pete Says:
Oh, and Mr. Robins owes someone an apology. YES!
MostDiabolicalH... Says:
I'm amazed Diego survived the first two minutes.
I figured UFC fan would be in here dropping racist slurs about all this by now. Thankfully we have all been spared so far.
KidDinomite Says:
Diego really needs to fire his Jiu Jitsu coach who kept telling him he needs to take Penn down, even though he could clearly see it wasn't gonna happen. The key to this fight for Diego was the standup. If he had better striking and varied up his punches and kicks and moved his head more, the fight might have been closer or would have gone in his favor....
Disco-Platypus Says:
I would still put GSP's utter domination of BJ above this one, so calling it "one of the most dominant performances I have ever seen" may be a stretch. Outside of strikes on the ground and the clinch, BJ landed ten strikes in their entire fight, whereas GSP landed a total of 124 outside of ground-and-pound and clinch, and 267 including (BJ landed a total of 63). That is ten, people - only two more than Diego landed. On the ground, GSP's dominance was similar: 4 of 7 TDs completed, with 10 total transitions. And, finally, the "total offensive output" performance rating for Penn/Sanchez was 75% in BJ's favor. GSP's rating in his fight with Penn? 78%. Statistically speaking, GSP dominated Penn moreso than Penn dominated Sanchez. GSP is forever slept on, though.

Did you actually watch that fight?
What scare?.. the left jab that opened up Fedor's pre-existing wound on his nose??- It was clearly visible BEFORE the fight even started, the mere fact that you are acting like it is so much more then it was is a testament to how fucking horrid Strikeforce's announcers are.
What scare? When Rogers got on top for some sloppy GnP which almost turned into an armbar...
I recommend you watch that fight a few more times...
Zescape Says:
Someone's gonna sneak up on Diego while he's sleeping and have sex with his forehead. He better watch out.

LOL.
This is my favorite part of your little diatribe. "GSP is almost there." Well you see, my little friend, GSP is there, and that was pretty clearly demonstrated by his absolute dismantling of BJ. Even if you analyze it as within their weight classes, GSP has still faced tougher and more well-rounded competition. Thiago, Fitch, Koschek, etc., are more well-rounded than Stevenson, Sherk and Diego - and that is further driven home by the fact Koschek and Fitch beat Diego, for Christ's sake. God damn you are a retard.

Are you guys serious? Or did I just take the bait?

@ disco platypus
FightMetric showed a grand total of 8 strikes landed by Diego.
8.
mustache ride Says:
There are no viable contenders at 155 now. DW talked Frankie Edgar and Grey Maynard but he better have a better headliner on that card. Having one of them headline opposite Penn would be worse then Silva v Cote, or that other guy.
Disco-Platypus Says:
I actually just forgot portions of the alphabet, on account of Pelf's stupidity.
Disco-Platypus Says:
@ Most Diabolic.
Yes, I saw that brother. And outside of on the ground while in bottom position - i.e., being utterly dominated BJ landed ten.
Ten.
Aside from that, Fight Metric rated GSP's total offensive output above BJ's in this fight. Pretty simple. You are considering Diego's lack of activity as the main signifier, when it is not.
Disco-Platypus Says:
That and BJ had to quit.
Quit.

Whats worng with naming Fedor in the top? No everyone puts him at number one, but you cant really deny his greatness. Learn to share, and we will all get along. Otherwise you're going to have to sit by yourself with your Kraft scissors and circles of paper while the rest of us laugh at your wrongness and frolic happily outside, basking in the light of Fedor's glorious sweater.
No one is denying BJ's P4P abilities, but just because we like BJ doesn't mean we can't like Fedor. For instance, I happen to like both of them, I would just rank Fedor above BJ.
And how do you put GSP over BJ when BJ lost to him twice, the second time in tremendously crappy fashion?
And for what its worth, Fedor was never in trouble. FFS. ;P
MostDiabolicalH... Says:
Ya it was just a whole different kind of domination.
BJ looked like he could take a nap on Diego during every takedown attempt.
It was weird to see the similarity also in the fact that both Georges and BJ were so visibly frustrated they could not finish the fight after the 3rd and 4th.
steampunk22 Says:
On another note..
If BJ wants to fight for the welterweight title again, great, but I want to see him fight a few welterweights BESIDES GSP first. Throw him to Koschek or something, there a lot of guys who would fight Penn and it would allow a more gradual easing into the division for him. Like Anderson Silva in lightheavyweight. Climb the ladder....
Of the remaining LW's though, my guess is that the winner of Maynard/Diaz should fight Florian for a title shot. Although if the UFC wants Florian to fight two more times first, they could go for the winner of Maynard/Diaz fights the winner of Florian/Edgar (or Florian/Griffin), for a title shot. There are some decent matchups there, but I get a little tired seeing the same dudes fight each other, for how the deep the roster is the UFC can be a little incestuous.
What do you guys think?
Turd Furgeson Says:
@Savageleto
I think that he was talking about the ground and pund part. It may not have been a scare for fedor, but I certainly was thinkin "oh my".
Also just imagine if arlovski didn't have such a weak chin. He was schooling fedor in boxing. He might just be the #1 HW if not for that flying knee.
Disco-Platypus Says:
@ Steam,
I think the UFC will match up Florian and Sanchez next. They have both recently lost to BJ, and that story line is too good to pass up. If Diego wins, he will have to win two more. If Florian wins, well, I am not so sure. I have no desire in seeing Florian lose a title bout for the third time. I think Maynard has the wrestling to challenge BJ, but not the striking. The true challenge to BJ would be a Joachim Hansen-esque fighter who is competent on the feet as well as the ground.
831 Son Says:
BJ is guaranteed the best at 155 and he is indeed superior to everyone else, in his weight class. Its like the middleweights now. Anderson has completely dominated that whole division and is/will be smashing the LHW's. I still think BJ would get fucked up against GSP though, but it would be interesting to see BJ fight at 170 and see how he holds up.
Fedor is the man, but Strikeforce is complete horse shit.
MostDiabolicalH... Says:
Also, when is someone going to get a grip on the fact that takedowns are not going to fly against BJ? Florian and now Sanchez wore themselves out failing repeatedly and ended up getting finished.
Disco-Platypus Says:
After last night's thrashing, I am also beginning to support more and more the idea of an upwards transition for BJ, GSP and A. Silva. Outside of possibly Maynard, I see no challenges for BJ at 155 in the UFC - and though Aoki and Hansen may provide a competitive match, I think he thrashes them as well. Similarly for GSP. The match-up with Hardy is a joke, and I think GSP would ruin the lives of Shields, Diaz and the "Whitemare," the only relevant WWs outside of the UFC. Nothing needs to be said about the Spider. Moving them all up one weight class - BJ to 170, GSP to 185, Silva to 205 - presents some very interesting matchups, though.

Cheers, mate. Glad to see another Hellboy fan on CP. If you say you also like Sarah Kaufman, we'll be friends for life!
Anyway, yeah, Hansen vs. Penn would be quite a fight. Unlike Sanchez, Hellboy would actually give BJ a run for his money.

My favorite fighter got beat to a bloody pulp by a whining crybaby bitch from Hawaii. I hate BJ, and no win will ever change that.
I lost money on this fight, and I pretty much feel goddamn humbled by it. This sucks, and it hurts to see it happen.
I hate blowjob penn, and I hate anyone who likes him. that is all I have to say.

I had told you exactly what would happen and why, rogan even mentionned the quote from Freddie Roach I had warned you about "BJ has the best hands in MMA"...... I know how you feel today, the same thing happend to me when Kenflo lost to BJ, except I did not lose money on it, I just wanted Kenny to win real bad because I had follwed him for so long, after what I told you I cannot believe you put money on this......
At any rate we will talk more when Florian v. Sanchez 2 happens.....as I had said some time ago, but for now I want you to rest, recover and learn more about this beautiful sport of MMA.
