Penn Won’t Be Ready for Florian Until Late Summer

According to a new report on Sherdog, BJ Penn won’t be available for a lightweight title defense against Kenny Florian until late July or August, because he wants to spend time with his new daughter. Though Dana White — and BJ Penn’s facebook page — previously stated that the Penn/Florian tilt was a possibility to headline UFC 99 (June 13th; Cologne, Germany), it’s looking like the match could headline the as-of-yet unannounced UFC 101 or 102 cards.

If Penn does agree to a fight in late July, it will have been 14 months since the last time the UFC’s lightweight title was up for grabs — and eight months since Kenny Florian last stepped into the Octagon. It’s a long layoff, but whaddya gonna do:

“For me, it’s the fight that I want and it’s the fight he wants and we both need to come to terms on it, so if that’s what I need to do to make it happen, if I have to wait, then I have no choice,” [Florian] said.

Florian, 32, said he could adjust his training as needed. Still, a postponed date would effect the Boston native in a way the affluent Penn family never has to worry about.

“Schedule-wise it makes it a little difficult because money-wise, you expect a certain amount to come in and I’ve been trying to budget things accordingly,” said Florian, who earned $80,000 for his last win. “It might be a little tougher now.”

It’s a bummer, but waiting for your title shot is still a better option than taking a placeholder bout just to stay busy, and running the risk of getting Paulo Thiago‘d.

Semi-Related: Even if Penn is ready to fight by early July, the lineup for the UFC’s monumental 100th (-ish) event (July 11th, Las Vegas) might already be too crowded. In addition to the GSP/Alves and Henderson/Bisping fights, the rumor of a Randy Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko one-off match has reared its head again, thanks to UFC-approved journalist Kevin Iole.

BJ is going to crush that ugly nerd. Fuck Florian!

PG-13- February 24, 2009 at 7:05 pm

I just wanted to mention the picture of this article is awesome, BJ PENN ducking. I guess because I’m rooting for Florian I was able to see that connection you made immediately.

Anonymous- February 24, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Fuck penn, he can train till the end of his life, he wont ever be able to beat Florian. Hes a poser!
The longer he puts off a title defense is just longer he gets to hold on to something that makes him something, without it hes a nothing, and after he loses he will cry like a bitch and retire…good riddance to bad rubbish.

RyanHobbs- February 24, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Is he sparring with The Rock in that picture?

just some dong- February 24, 2009 at 12:30 pm

How is it cool for Penn to take time off like this? He’s holding a belt and the UFC was cool enough to let him keep it while stepping up to fight GSP – doesn’t he have a responsibily now to defend it ASAP?

Say what you want about “greasy” GSP – he would not be pulling this shit. Fuck, Frank Mir wouldn’t even be pulling this shit!

Might as well make another lame interim belt, ‘cuz we’re all on BJ’s schedule now.

Dont really give a shit about Fedor and Couture.

We all know Fedor is gonna whoop Randy’s ass. (i love randy, big fan) How many more devastating knock outs can that dude sustain? I mean really, once he got beat by Brock it kinda took away from the whole hype of Randy vs Fedor.

I think Fedor vs Brock would be fuckin awsome. I would love nothing more than to see Brock get shredded to pussy bits by Fedor. Make it happen Dana!

As for Penn vs Florian. Im takin Florian, i want him to whoop Penn into such embarrasment that he quits….again. With that said it was great watching Penn for these past couple years…..now go eat some god damned pig and pineapple you fat boy. “Here’s 50 cents, why dont you supersize it bitch.”

matt- February 24, 2009 at 11:24 am

i read it was because that this is an international show and that stars with a ppv percentage clause in their contracts do no like fighting on these shows. The international ppv’s never have good buy rates and that results in a loss of money for the fighter, i think if they want stars to start participating they are going to need to compensate them as if the fight was taking place in the US.

Also is this fight doesnt happen it looks as if the main event will be Wanderlei Silva vs. Rich Franklin.

Penn just hopes florian will fight someone else and lose, thus not being next in line. BJ is scared!

Thoughts- February 24, 2009 at 11:04 am

The simple fact is that BJ is a PROFESSIONAL fighter, and a CHAMPION. He isnt the local guy jumping in the ring at the local pub/bar fighting some other half drunk who was talked into getting knocked out by his girlfriend for $50.

A Champion professional fighter should act like a professional. In any other mainstream sport the athlete does not dictate the play. It should not be this way in MMA either. If you are injured, fine. If your fragile ego is injured, get the fuck in the cage and defend your belt. A champion shouldnt be making excuses…at all. Oh the number one contender doesnt motivate him…wah wah; Is your real name KJ? Oh wait you have a kid…so do alot of other fighters. Oh, you just got pummeled recently by a larger, better trained, fighter in a match you all but demanded, in that case….GET THE FUCK BACK IN THE GYM.

Champions defend their belts, thats what they do. Regardless of his situation now, he has put 155 on the back burner long enough in order to chase his ego.

Anderson Silva fights people like T.L. & Cote when he has much more favorable fan/fame options in 205. -Champion

St. Pierre fights another top 5 P4P’r at his weight class when he is the only one with anything to lose. -Champion

Kenflo has fought additional competition proving again and again he deserves another chance at the strap. This is like Kos, You have to give props to fighters that get in there and fight anyone/anytime/anywhere. -Champion mentality

Im sorry, but I used to like BJ Penn. He WAS a beast but unfortunately I think he has been broken mentally. It is time for him to step up and prove he is still on top of 155. (THE DIVISION HE OWNS A BELT IN)

Bootylam!- February 24, 2009 at 11:02 am

You go JayK! Why is everybody blaming Penn for Kenflo (ugh) not fighting? You want to fight? Fight! It’s called a tune up. Do it! Sure there’s a risk of getting upset or injured but that’s the nature of the beast. The UFC should be more like boxing in that aspect.

Fenix- February 24, 2009 at 10:45 am

They should have made him vacate the title when GSP agreed to fight him for the WW.

Jay K.- February 24, 2009 at 10:39 am

Is it just me or does anyone else think that it’s time for the UFC to institute a mandatory defense clause in being a champion? If you don’t defend the belt within 12 months of winning it then the belt becomes vacant and the number one and two contenders face off for the title. Frank Mir was stripped of the HW belt because of a tragic motorcycle accident leaving him unable to defend, why is BJ here getting special treatment because he more or less doesn’t feel like defending the LW belt?

ItburnswhenIpee- February 24, 2009 at 10:18 am

And now you’ve got me thinking- how about Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler on UFC 100?

Fedor a million ankles- February 24, 2009 at 10:17 am

BJ Penn has no consideration for the fans. Quitting, postponing fights, poor sportsmanship… I don’t see how anyone can be a fan of BJ Penn.

A BJ Fan- February 24, 2009 at 10:13 am

@ ItburnswhenIpee

True. I take that back. Sorry KenFlo fans.
I didn’t mean to downplay Kenny’s skills, I’m just saying maybe that’s how Penn feels.
BTW, it’s not like Ben Stiller is ugly or anything.
I was just making light of the situation.

Pudge McAdams- February 24, 2009 at 10:11 am

Dr

Yes it was a joke. Can you prescribe me some weight loss pills or something?

Dynamite!!- February 24, 2009 at 10:09 am

i’m sure penn took damage and maybe his ego is too big to admit that he took some. and he didn’t continue to fight bc he was gassed and was getting his ass kicked. he had no answer for georges and was probably mentally exhausted too.
just bc he said he was fine after doesn’t mean he wasn’t gassed. one can feel exhausted one night, and fine enough the next day to type.

ItburnswhenIpee- February 24, 2009 at 10:09 am

@ A BJ Fan

Try to be a little more consistent, would you? First you tell us to have a little respect for Penn, and not call him a bitch, and then you compare a skilled professional fighter to a comedic actor, simply because of a passing resemblence? I think your credibility just fell out your ass.

Dr.- February 24, 2009 at 10:03 am

@ Pudge

I guess you can’t bring anything relevant to the table and need to troll. Better get on that. This article was actually going well until you pulled your head out of your ass and tried to put some words down.

Dr.- February 24, 2009 at 10:00 am

Hahaha, thanks Pudge, I’ll think about it. If you’re not joking, then why is it funny?

Good one. Get that guy a t-shirt.

Dr.- February 24, 2009 at 9:58 am

And on BJ’s site, he said after the fight (in his own words) that he was no worse for wear – no real damage. So by his account, he didn’t take a beating and shouldn’t have to deal with an extended heal up time. Also begs the question about why he couldn’t continue to fight.

His ego got checked and he has to sort that out. That’s why he’s been wasting his energy making excuses and videos. Denial is one step in the process, BJ.

Duck away, duck away.

Pudge McAdams- February 24, 2009 at 9:57 am

Hey Dr,

After you finish surfing the web, I want you to go lie down, take a deep breath and then go fuck yourself. And I’m not joking about this…

Dr.- February 24, 2009 at 9:55 am

And as much as I can’t for the life of me like Koschek, I respect his desire to fight as much as possible. You’re a fighter, you fight? Good.

Oh wait, what’s the excuse going to be in the summer to postpone Florian’s shot?

Dynamite!!- February 24, 2009 at 9:53 am

i think penn also earns a percentage in payperview buys on his contract. and considering that fighting is his main source of income, maybe that’s also why he doesn’t wanna fight in europe.

BJ Penn- February 24, 2009 at 9:52 am

Hey guys just wanted to say hello and cowabunga n stuff. The real reason I will be taking some extra time off is so I can make a movie about GSP greasing. You thougth that short youtube video was impressive? I’m putting Steven Spielberg and ILM to work on this bitch. You haven’t seen vaseline until you see my next movie. Laters, guys. Hakuna Matata!
