(“I see you can ‘andle my riddum.”)
In an interview with Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, Dana White confirmed that BJ Penn and George St. Pierre would have their rematch at the UFC’s Super Bowl weekend event on January 31st, 2009, in Las Vegas. GSP’s welterweight belt will be on the line.
White also confirmed that UFC 91 will be held November 15th in Portland, Oregon, and will indeed feature a lightweight bout between Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson. (We can safely infer now that BJ Penn won’t be fighting again at the end of the year.) When asked about Wanderlei Silva‘s next Octagon appearance, White would only say that the Axe Murderer probably wouldn’t be part of their December 27th event in Las Vegas — which could mean they’re still pushing for him to headline the Portland card against Quinton Jackson, or that they’re extending his hiatus until early ’09.
“We have nothing but big fights left for the rest of the year, but this is so crazy because there are so many of them,” White said. “We’re going to have a retreat on Monday to figure this all out.” Here’s what’s on the dry-erase board at this point…
UFC 88 (September 6th, Atlanta): Liddell/Evans, Franklin/Hamill, Parisyan/Yoshida, Henderson/Palhares
UFC Fight Night 15 (September 17th, Omaha): Diaz/Neer, Danzig/Guida, Alexander/Schafer, Lauzon/Bradley
UFC 89 (October 18th; Birmingham, England): Bisping/Leben, Machida/T. Silva, Jardine/Vera, Sokoudjou/Cane, Carwin/Wain
UFC 90 (October 25th, Chicago): A. Silva/Cote, Sanchez/Alves, Sherk/Griffin, Franca/Tibau
UFC 91 (November 15th, Portland): Florian/Stevenson
The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale (December 13th, Las Vegas): no fights announced yet
UFC 92 (December 27th, Las Vegas): Nogueira/Mir
UFC 93 (January 31st, Las Vegas): Penn/St. Pierre

commentsBJ will come out to his hawaii music and the booing. Then he will play around with GSP for 2 rounds and submit him in the 3rd. The he will be licking the blood of his gloves from that busted face of GSP, savage style.
You obviously just like swing for the fence brawlers and can't appreciate technical fighters like Silva or GSP.
Silva would destroy the above mentioned fighters. Why? Because he goes in with a real game plan. He rocks people standing. He submits people on the ground. He knocked out Tony Fryklund with a f*cking 'right back elbow' seamlessly. Chuck and Wanderlei would be perfect for Silva to destroy, he could just dodge their wild punches and finish them on the ground. Why would they be throwing wild punches? Because while Silva is in his prime that's the only way anyone is going to catch him. Meanwhile Wandy and Chuck are past their primes.
"I love how their pound for pound posterboys (Penn and Silva) fight in an artificially low weight class.."
GSP is FAR bigger at WW than Penn is at LW or Silva is at MW. Are you overlooking him by mistake?
"Lastly, pound-for-pound doesn’t mean that these guys will kick everybody’s ass up and down the weight classes. Pound-for-pound means that these guys are better than those in the division and have accomplished more than their peers in other weight classes, and then compiles it all into a number. By what I deduce from you is that Bob Sapp should be #1 Primo P4P king forever, since the dude is huge, and athletic, and skill be damned, will beats the shit out of an entire army of 155?ers."
I'm not sure where you got your information--or even what you are actually saying here--but p4p was developed [in boxing] to compare skill while negating size advantages fighters may use within a given weight class. So someone who is huge in a given weight class [Griffin and Jackson at LHW, GSP at WW] can be tremendously dominant within their weight classes, but that doesn't correlate to p4p skill.
Sadly legions of ignorant internet fanboys think it does.
The easiest way to look at p4p is this...Pound for Pound is about PURE SKILL: when a smaller fighter beats a larger fighter in a given weight class, They've used skill, they're better p4p. If a larger fighter uses his size/strength to overcome smaller/weaker opponents--potentially even clearing out a division, they should get ranked high in that particular division, but not ranked high p4p.

His rhetoric is getting old. There are 2-3 good fights from now til January, but it's not like this is the best 6 month stretch ever. Come on, if Neer, Cote and Leben are headlining fights....

I just mean that to me they aren't the best pound for pound and Dana white is a master marketer like PT barnum.

What do you mean? Are you implying that Anderson Silva and BJ Penn somehow aren't 185 & 155 pounders naturally and are somehow "assisted" in making the weight? If so, you're out of your mind. In fights that are sanctioned by SACs, you can't find any schenanigans like that going around. More importantly, it's fighting, it's mma and cutting weight to get into the lowest weight class you can possibly make & still function at is part of that game.
Penn is getting a shot because it will make them a tonne of money, which is fine for a business.

With respect to a Florian / Stevenson match talk about a filler. No upside for Florian, and if he loses, the 155 pound division gets cast into similar disarray as some of the others.
But again in reality when does having a legit number one contender stop a title fight, Cote / Silva - Mir / Nog anyone?
This is getting to be like professional wrestling lmao.
