Sometimes in life we must give up that which we love in order to pursue our dreams. It isn’t easy, and often it rips out some part of our soul, but we suck it up and do it anyway because that’s how badly we want to prove that the top of the MMA world is Japan. Just look at Shinya Aoki up there, stripped of his magic tights and forced to wear shorts like some narcissistic American surfer. Imagine the shame his family must feel. The utter disgrace. And yet, this is what the man is willing to go through to fight Gilbert Melendez in Strikeforce next Saturday. That’s called sacrifice, people.

commentsHe was quite imposing for such a pale man.
And Rex, what do you mean by 'shopped? Since I took it, I'll tell you I fixed a little fold in the background paper where the sun stained my precious backdrop. It's pixelated because it's compressed.
I still think Melendez has the grappling skills to keep Aoki off him long enough to knock his goofy ass out.
I see what you did there...
Hes basically the same size as Melendez, with maybe 15% less muscle.
Hes definately not as slim as he used to be. Aoki's been strength training.
Nothing to see here, carry on.

I'm positive he would be raped in UFC like all other asian fighters who never seem to do very well
IMO, the tights are a double-edged sword.
They give the wearer the advantage of a better grip on their opponent. Slippery sweat on the legs and body is no longer a problem.
On the other hand, the tights give your opponent a better grip on your legs. It can make leg locks and heel hooks easier.
I'd bet that the decision about Aoki's tights ultimately came down to the will of the athletic commission.
"I kinda curious how this will change his ground game..."
It will be the same minus the rubber gaurd.
I'm just full of shitty jokes today...
He's gonna get raped.
