Photo of the Day: Jon Jones Channels Muhammad Ali on New ‘UFC Magazine’ Cover

(in b4 shitstorm)

Is Jon Jones the “Greatest of All Time”? The latest issue of UFC Magazine might be trying to drop a subtle hint in that direction, with their Bones-in-a-pool cover taking inspiration from a classic photo of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. As Cagewriter explains:

Though it may seem early in Jones’ MMA career to make comparisons to Ali, it’s not too early for this picture. Flip Schulke took this iconic picture of Ali in 1961. It was just a year after Ali, still called Cassius Clay, won Olympic gold in Rome. He was a young man who was astonishing the boxing world with his power, speed and footwork. At the time, he was like no other boxer. In the early 60s, he won 19 straight bouts and seemed invincible. Does that remind you of anyone?

An apt comparison, or more fuel for the haters?

In the Ali picture you can't tell from his appearance or stance that's even under water, which I think is the whole point. In the Jones pic though it clearly looks like hes struggling to hold his breath, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I dunno, In the Ali picture it looks like he can stand up and get air. It looks like the UFC Mag people dumped him in the deep end and said "hold your breath and maybe we will snap a pic" its hard to tell because you cant see the surface or reflection in the Jones pic... Also, I really doubt it was him that said "Hey pose me like Ali because I am the greatest!" it was likely the nonstop hype machine of the UFC pushing their poster boy.

I'll reserve judgement until he goes to Manila and dances Michael Jackson's Thrilla.

First of all, the Ali pic would look exactly like the Jones pic if taken with today's (color) digital cameras. Also, the UFC art dept. undoubtedly added their own little flair to the image. Second, I doubt the folks on the other end of the Jones shot were so blinded by his greatness that they'd miss him holding his breath like a 5-year-old. Seriously people, get thine heads out of thine asses.

Neat, I wonder how long he can hold his breath?

I don't know if there was supposed to be a broader point being made in either of these pictures. I think both photographers were just surprised to see a black guy willingly get in the water.

The picture of Jones is fake. He is not under water. He was either photo shopped into the pic or the water was. You can plainly see the Ali's shadow on the pool floor and a reflection of him on the water above his head. The Jones pic does not have this and the reflections on his body are wrong. He held his cheeks like that so it would appear that he is holding his breath. Non swimmers do that. They have no idea on how to hold their breath under water cause they never had to.
