Photo of the Year Candidate: Nick Diaz and BJ Penn After UFC 137

(Props: MMA Scraps)

A superstar on the rise, fist-posing next to a possibly-retired legend who barely has the strength to shaka — you can put this photo in the MMA dictionary next to “changing of the guard.”

UFC 137 provided another example of the unique emotional arc that this sport sometimes gives us. Headliners Nick Diaz and BJ Penn got into a near-tussle at the weigh-ins, spent three rounds trying to knock each other out, and after the fight they were chillin’ like two old bros. Never mind the fact that Penn’s left eye was leaking blood from all the blows he ate from Diaz, who happened to break the record for significant strikes landed in a UFC fight, by the way.

After the jump: More UFC 137 post-fight press conference highlights, in which Diaz talks about why he didn’t want to fight Penn, and explains that he didn’t go to school for buying a house. (That’ll make a little more sense when you watch it.)

Wiskey Tango- November 2, 2011 at 12:49 pm
Coloradored... Were you watching the same fight that the rest of us were watching? "Only know how to swing wildy" Didn't Diaz break the UFC record for most punches landed? Arn't they BOTH BJJ black belts? "No Martial Arts" No one working the jab? Penn's face should tell you how the "jabs" went....

really man, that makes as much sense as Diaz speaking... and make sure you tell your kid, that 15 years ago you was a idiot.

when my five year old ask me in 15 years, dad whats up with these two bloody dudes in the picture? I'm going to tell him son these are guys that only new how to swing wildly at each other without no MIXED MARTIAL ARTS to their game.either one didn't know how to do a takedown, either one couldn'y work a jab, son pretty much they just didn't have what gsp has. gsp was the champ back then when this picture was taken son and he still is now.Back then son some of the fans liked that nasty ass wild close my eyes and punch stuff..not me son i like that technique stuff, like don,t get hit take the sucker down and ground and pound his ass.

jyveturkey;
Boy George now that was fairly creative. Angry? You can tell all that from my two paragraphs of text? Awesome, perhaps you should start an 800 hotline and tell peoples fortunes you seem awesome at this.
Dynamo- October 31, 2011 at 7:16 pm
Nick sounds fine if he's not doing an MMA interview, it's weird.
bonesnapper- October 31, 2011 at 6:31 pm
they have a secret pic of them in the 69 position too.

The Pride rule of deducting money from fighters who floss should be implemented into the Unified Rules of MMA. If there's one thing I hate in MMA is flossers. We pay money to watch two gladiators go toe-to-toe, but often times, there are those chosen few who chose t ofloss, instead of fight and we are paying their checks. It is not right to have to pay these lazy MoFos and there needs to be something done to stop the shenanigans. Once this is implemented into the fight game, then we'll begin to see fighters punished for flossing, instead of them knowing they are getting X-amount of dollars, no matter what they do inside the Octagon.
jfjjfjff- October 31, 2011 at 3:20 pm
LJM, do you want to go on record and say that the ability to "speak well" and to be able to "communicate effectively" are NOT indicators of intelligence?
.
karma, i think you missed half of my goof on you to only focus on the "go fuck yourself" aspect of it.
jyveturkey- October 31, 2011 at 3:18 pm
Such a great photo and oh look, Boy George is back with more angry rants. Hi I'm Boy George and I hate everyone and I'm so mad right now I'm shaking and go fuck yourself and I love punctuation and I'm still angry and people swagger jack my hetero mohawk.

B.G.'s contribution is exactly what on this site?

As far as Diaz goes - "Dont judge a man until you walked a mile in his shoes," with your judgmental ass judgin asses.
intercept440- October 31, 2011 at 2:23 pm
look , i hate diaz but he convinced me that he may not be so overrated.
.
Penn's fall from grace seems to be on par with about matthughes. once hughes lost the title it all went downhill from there.
.
Diaz vs. GSP in Feb. will decide once and for all wheter he is really as badass as some thing he is, or if he will be another top contender which Gsp rolls over.
.
or maybe he beats gsp and becomes champ... ide convincing say at this point in the game GSP takes it all day long. but i also thought Diaz would get thouruly drubbed by penn...look how that turned out.
J3t- October 31, 2011 at 2:19 pm
You do know Diaz was only 23 years old when he lost to those wrestlers and has been on a hell of a run since right? True wrestling may be his weakness but if GSP gets him down he will have to deal with his BJJ which is just as big of a threat, if not more, than GSPs wrestling is.
Iskander Neptu- October 31, 2011 at 1:01 pm
@ Karma

-Different Penn. Fit not fat. Hungry instead of sedate and contemplating retirement.

So many great wrestlers at welterweight, fitch, sanchez, shields, story, koz, hendricks, rumble, stun gun, rory, ellenberger.
Diaz has fought not one of them. Penn sneaking a quick takedown against fitch does not a good offensive wrestler make.
Lonnie Batt- October 31, 2011 at 12:39 pm
c'mon guys this guy has a big problem, and Cesar is not there to help him all he does is antagonize Nick I think that this crew can set MMA and the UFC back 10 years if the e UFC is not careful weather or not he wins or loses against GSP this thing is going to be ugly,, WATCH,, I am almost sad to think what is capable of happening.... Did you hear in the interview with Gracie already saying that the way nick fights is what the fans want to see t,, that if GSP fights the way he likes to fight the fans will not like it and it will blow up in his face what does that mean.. thse guys are in another world Nick said that Jake sheilds got a bad deal in the ellenberger fight man he was KO'ed this is going to get real bad.. especially if george does hold him down and not stand with him
KarmaAteMyCat- October 31, 2011 at 12:34 pm

If I remember correctly Bj Penn took down Fitch and won the first two round of a certain fight from last year? Oh right no nick hasn't fought anyone with solid takedowns since Sherk you got me thanks bro.

I Completely agree with your entire statement..Well said sir thank you.

Also I ment in the above statement
"Just because someone does not speak coherently does not mean they can't process intelligent thoughts it’s just that simple."
SocalBee- October 31, 2011 at 12:17 pm
Seriously people...how can you not see this kid has some legitimate problems...problems that have absolutely nothing to do with his intelligence.
He admittedly has ADHD, and myself having numerous family members that have autism spectrum disorders...I can guarantee you, he suffers from one or more of them. And after years of counseling people like him, he probably even has some depression and anxiety.
He also, admittedly, self medicates with marijuana...which he is not allowed to use leading up to his fights...I don't know about any of you, but dealing with the mentality of a marijuana user who hasn't had any in a while can get kind of scary...with the primary and most noticeable symptom being paranoia. Add that to the adrenaline rush before, during, and after a fight...and you're going to get the jumbled mess you saw at the post-fight conference. It doesn't mean he's a complete moron. The interviews he gave for pre-fight shows were fine.
And by the way...I have an IQ of 142...and still use the term "go fuck yourself".
Iskander Neptu- October 31, 2011 at 12:06 pm
GSP-Diaz is just a HYPE fight. It has rout written all over it. I'm putting some bread down on this one. Suure thaaaing homie!!
Iskander Neptu- October 31, 2011 at 12:01 pm
Nick Diaz lovers: Your boy has not faced a high level wrestler since Sean Sherk. A fight which he lost. The Diaz boys are to be praised for their weird ass, useless looking but very effective stockton slapping. But they r physically weak, they succumb to wrestlers. Diaz aint all that. Sherk owned him. Koz would own him too. Even Matt hughes at 37 would make him his bitch. Sanchez did... and so on.
NomadRip- October 31, 2011 at 11:48 am
I'm guilty of being judgy about Nick in the past. I know why people give him a hard time and say the stuff like him being bad for the sport and all that, but I'm starting to like him the more I hear him talk. That second video had me laughing. I don't know what it's like to have grown up in his shoes, but I have a pretty good imagination, and I hope he continues to do well in the sport.

@ the glza

He's on that zen trip....it's called the chronic
KarmaAteMyCat- October 31, 2011 at 11:15 am
So wait Intelligent people don't end their statements with "Go fuck yourself?". I don't know what country you reside in but tons of intelligent people end statements with "Go fuck yourself" in this country furthermore someones demeanor does not define their level of intellectual prowess. Just because someone does not speak coherently does not mean they aren't process intelligent thoughts it's just that simple. Nick doesn't care about those retards laughing at him just like I don't care if you don't like how I bookend my statements. Don't be scared homie.
LJM- October 31, 2011 at 11:14 am
I shouldn't be surprised that at a place where lots of people who have never fought speak as experts on fighting there are also lots of people who have never studied or worked in the field of psychology talking about intelligence as if they know how to measure it.

There are an assortment of issues and characteristics that affect the way people speak, the way they process their own thoughts into speech, and how being in the public eye affects all that.

Nobody here knows how smart or stupid Nick Diaz is. It's fair to describe some of his behavior as negative or thoughtless, but some of the smartest people in the world engage in negative and thoughtless behavior.

Personally, I wish Nick would look into some cognitive therapy to address his negative attitudes and symptoms of depression. But that doesn't mean it makes any sense to speculate on his (or anybody else's) "intelligence."
mgunn- October 31, 2011 at 11:13 am
my whole opinion of him changed when Rogan said he has great cardio and does triathalons and swam from Alcatraz back to SF shore.... to have cardio takes discipline, nothing else.

With that said I don't think Rogan enough credit for Penn the first round (his cardio sucks so 2 and 3 clearly lost). Penn was striking well! esp for being so much smaller.
