Please God, No; Dan Severn Calls Out Royce Gracie for UFC Rio.

There are many things we’d love to see in Rio. A 52 year old in manties is not one of them.

Well this just keeps getting weirder and weirder.  Ever since Royce Gracie announced his intentions to compete at UFC Rio, we’ve been wondering exactly who the UFC could possibly find for him to fight.  Naturally, Art Jimmerson answered, with zero implications of sarcasm, that he would like to fight Royce Gracie.  Now, presumably before Tito Ortiz could get around to it, UFC legend Dan Severn has decided to call out Royce Gracie.  Highlights from a press release from Dan Severn’s camp available after the jump.

Since the hint of a UFC Event in Brazil hit the Online Rumor Mill, Dan Severn has been passionate about his intentions to take part in this event as being his finale match to his fans and the MMA Community.  Dan has said on numerous occasions that if he had the opportunity to have such a match in Brazil, he would want it to be with Royce Gracie.

In light of Royce publically announcing his intent to take part in a UFC Event in Brazil, Dan Severn is, officially, throwing out the challenge to Royce Gracie.  Wanting to take it to the cage, one last time, in an all-out ground war; Two legends of the octagon can thrill and amaze the UFC audience of yesterday and today, one last time.

Also, in a rare behind-the-scenes-look, Dan Severn is opening up his comeback trail training to his fans by allowing a production crew to chronicle the challenges, emotion and even the levity of a battle-tested Hall of Fame Champ, dusting off his boots, for one last run.

Look, I have nothing but respect for Dan Severn.  The very fact that he’s 52 years old and not only still fighting, but riding a nine fight win streak, is incredible.  But MMA fans do not need their own version of Jordan with the Wizards.  Perhaps more importantly, MMA fans do not want to pay to watch two old, one-dimensional fighters hug fight on what will otherwise be a stacked card.  Please, somebody just starch this whole “Royce fighting in Rio” thing before it gets even uglier.

Russel was great... at his position... something tells me he couldn't run the point if his life depended on it tho.

my statemaent is meant to be taken in the literal sense... that by basketball player, i mean EVERY position... therefore making Magic Johnson the greatest "basketball player" of all times. And I say this without EVER liking the Lakers. I was a Dominique Wilkins fan back in the day.

For some reason the Rio card already has the feel of something happening outside the normal UFC mold. Maybe that's just me but I actually think adding this fight to the card would be a huge ppv success and pay some props to the old school ufc. Like going back in time.

1st off...

Michael Jordan is NOT the greatest "basketball player" of all time... he IS the greatest shooting guard of all time... But any REAL B-ball fan knows that the greatest BASKETBALL PLAYER of all time is Magic Johnson... the guy played EVERY fucking position. 6'9" point guard that could double as a centre for an injured Kareem and win an NBA title in his rookie year? c'mon son!!! (not to mention he beat aids)...

and 2nd...

Severn would be ok... rather him than a younger guy smashing Royce... But my god, what did Royce do to you to make you want to put him in a cage with Bas Rutten??? 1 kick from Bas is like a life time of drinking cheap booze damage on your liver!!!!

If Royce is going to make his last match in Brazil you know he wants to avenge his loss to Matt Hughes but i think a perfect fight for 2 guys to go out would be Royce Gracie vs Bas Ruten. what do you think?

Although Royce is no longer relevant as a fighter, he should be allowed to participate out of respect for his contributions to the sport. I would prefer to see him fight someone other than Severn, however. Kamusta ka na, Pinoys/ Pinays?

Dan Severn isn't so much still fighting as he is crushing the canny-est of cans in the bush leagues. Look at his record, I had to scroll all the way down to 2004 to find a name I even recognized and that was a loss to James Thompson.

MAKE IT HAPPEN! That was the first UFC I had ever seen as a kid, I would love to watch em do it again. Gracie vs Severn would be a bitchen undercard fight on spike.

^^^^^^ It's not just height but is it? Jones is wide with big shoulders....put it this way Silva doesn't look particularly big @185...he's 6'2 but he's lean....jones is huge @205 and dwarfs everyone....he could carry 240 no problem

This is a fight I would like to see. I'm sure it's been said before, but I would like an old guy division. Like when Cotoure and Coleman fought, or remember when IFL had the coaches fight? Do somethin like that.
