Punch-Face of the Week: Jay Hieron vs. Joe Riggs

Another weekend of fights yields another instant classic punch-face, this time courtesy of Jay Hieron’s left uppercut. The great thing about the punch-face is that no matter how tough or cool or seemingly unflappable a fighter is, everybody looks like they’re wishing they’d chosen a different career path in that one fleeting moment.
In this case, Joe Riggs seems to be regretting his decision not to become a court reporter. It's a steady paycheck, reasonable hours, and if anyone happens to hit you in the face while you’re on the job, at least you can be assured that they’ll be immediately tackled by a bailiff. The down side of that job is it’s a lot tougher to convince your co-workers to call you Diesel. We make choices and we live with the consequences, I suppose.

One thing I love about having watched so much MMA is how unrealistic TV and Movies are when it comes to fighting. I always knew it was off but now I know by exactly how much. Whenever I'm watching a movie or TV show and I see some dude get knocked out by a punch and then stay unconscious for 20 minutes as they drag him off somewhere I can laugh knowing that people usually wake up 10 seconds after going to sleep. Or when they tie someone up in a chair and punch him square in the jaw 10 times. Unless the guy is Mark Hunt he's probably going to be asleep after the 3rd one anyway. I always knew the stuff was fake and unrealistic but MMA has given me an inside knowledge of exactly how it's unrealistic.

It's weird, as painful as that looks... it almost seems as if Riggs has a look of peace in his closed eyes. Although, that could be the sight of God from being so close to death.
