Questionable Strategy of the Day: Diaz Wants Guillard’s Fists

(Nate Diaz: Not here to make friends.)

Yesterday we gazed in wonder at the poster for UFC Fight Night 19, which is being headlined, rather improbably, by a fight between Nate Diaz and Melvin Guillard. This new article about the event on UFC.com doesn’t really explain why the match is getting such a push, but it does provide some insight into Diaz’s current emotional state:

“Finally I’m fighting someone that’s not afraid to stand up with me,” Diaz said. “Melvin’s a tough guy and I know that he’ll want to stand and trade with me. I don’t think the fans want to see two guys holding each other.”

This, of course, coming from a jiu-jitsu specialist who’s not particularly known for the power of his hands, who’s never finished a fight via strikes during his UFC career. Meanwhile, Guillard is a guy who evenly splits his time between knocking dudes the fuck out and getting choked to sleep on the ground. He’s exactly the kind of guy you’d want to hold down, and not stand and trade with. But that’s that Diaz pride, fuckin’ witcha. After two straight fights in which his opponents’ wrestling beat his jiu-jitsu, all Nate wants to do is bang and put on an exciting match — and that could be the recipe for his first KO loss. Listen brah, I know it looks like gay foreplay, but sometimes sticking to your bread-and-butter is the best way to go. Just ask Michael Bisping

I think his brother's recent rebirth as a human sewing machine is starting to affect Nate's gameplans.

The Huerta/Maynard fight is much more deserving of headlining status. Huerta's always been an exciting fighter to watch, but once again because of Dana's bullshit the fighters get screwed, as well as the integrity of the sport. I'd rather hear the audio of a Joan Rivers taking it up the ass from Lexington Steele than listen to Nate Diaz speak a single sentence. Fuck

I think the GIF is from when Nate and Rob Emerson got into it over some shit Emerson wrote on a wall.

Great point Nate! Be honest.Nobody wants to see Gray Maynard's boring ass headline more than we wanted to see Limp Biz play live.

Dunno about that......I see the Huerta/Maynard fight being a possible all out war much like the Huerta/Guida fight was: highly entertaining. The Diaz/Guillard fight will end with a quick KO by Guillard or a quick sub by Diaz. Personally, I've got no interest in that fight whatsoever

Wow, never though I'd hear that from a Cesar Gracie brown belt! Apparently it's only "holding each other down" when you're completely outclassed. Joe Stevenson's ground game was excellent in their fight. I for one was very entertained. Good luck standing with Guillard. Let us know how that works for you. As for Maynard vs. Huerta - I pick Maynard by unanimous tramp stamp. Uh, I mean, decision.

ahh yea thanks angry feet ... I love how you can visibly see Nate's gangsta ass lisp without the need of any audio

hahaha good call ihateemo, I've said that before, I love maynard cuz he represents the murda mitten coming out of MSU .... but .... a tramp stamp .. really ... did he lose a bet?

Diaz boys wanna stand and bang even though it's not the best part of their skillset....all for the benifit of an exciting fight. you know you love it,at the end of the day who cares what the won/ lost record is, if he gets cut he goes to Strikeforce and is instantly the #1 contender at 155... War Diaz boys....
