Quick Hits: Griffin/Silva at UFC 101, Maynard Signs with Everlast, + More

(Dana White does the hard sell on TUF 9.  Props: Cage Writer)

Forrest Griffin and Thiago Silva are expected to get back in action against one another at the still officially unannounced UFC 101 event in August that will feature a Randy Couture/Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira main event.  With both Griffin and Silva coming off losses this is one of those wonderful situations where somebody has to turn things around while someone else has to drop two straight and then reevaluate his life and career.  All signs point to the event taking place in Portland, OR. – also known as the town with best strip clubs in America.  Count us in.

– Since he apparently thinks he’s a boxer now, I suppose it’s only fitting that Gray Maynard inked a sponsorship deal with Everlast MMA.  Maynard’s pounded-flat mug is even going to be the focal point for an ad campaign, so I guess it pays to abandon all your wrestling training and beat guys up on the feet.  Does it pay to make a decision-machine like Maynard your poster boy?  Everlast will find out, possibly the hard way.

Sean Sherk thinks he’s in line for the next lightweight title shot if he beats Frankie Edgar at UFC 98, and he expects that the belt will still be around B.J. Penn’s waist after he faces Kenny Florian.  Drawing on his experience fighting both men, Sherk says Penn “has pretty much every advantage” in a bout with Florian.  That might be whitewashing Penn’s conditioning issues a little too much, but what do you expect from Sherk, who just assumes everybody is out there doing caveman training every day.

Watching Randy fight Nog is gonna be kinda like masterbaiting while you have a stomach ache, sure your content to do it, but after words you feel like shit about the whole situation

Dana is the man.

Truth2pwr lays it out solidly compared to the usual dogma of Penn's dominance. I had not looked at his current record as closely as Truth just posted. The Stevenson and Sherk demolitions are what you are fed constantly by the UFC in highlights, so that is what comes to mind when you compare Penn to the other LWs.

Whichever way we look at it, I doubt BJ Penn will be the champ by the end of the year.

If he was gonna retire after defeating GSP, it leads me to think his interest is waning, even if it's slightly. He needs a resurgence -- another one.

I have to agree with Truth2Pwr. Florian is getting better and better and is more hungry than TUF GUY at a cock sandwich buffet.

BJ has too much to fall back on in terms of lifestyle to train at the level necessary to compete with modern, contemporary MMA fighters. Don't get me wrong im a Penn fan, but Florian is a beast in my book.

@ Truth2Pwr

Good call, good points. Whether Penn is a class above the rest at lightweight or not we need to see it proven. Although I do tend to side with the thought that he is, he needs to stop being so damn melodramatic and rack up some victories to prove it himself.

Forrest Griffin and Thiago Silva - what a good fight this is going to be.
Just as long as Forrest can keep from slugging it out I think he has a great chance at coming away with a win here.

I gotta go against Sherk's prediction on the Penn vs. Florian matchup. What has BJ really shown us since his return to the UFC in 2006?

Loss to GSP by gas out

Loss to Hughes by gas out

Win over a washed up Jens Pulver who has since dropped a weight class and still lost like 7 in a row since then.

Win over Joe Daddy who has since lost 2 out of his next 3.

Win over Sherk by psych out after he decided that trying to strike with his T-Rex arms was a better strategy than GNPing.

Loss to GSP by gas out.

I'm gonna throw the victory over Pulver in the trash and call that a 2-3 record. Over the same span, Florian is 7-1 with a decision loss to Sherk, and most importantly, he looks better and better every fight. My prediction... guessed it. Win goes to Florian by gas out. Take it to the bank!

I doubt Portland strip clubs have anything up on Vegas. That said, they do have some of the best micro-breweries in the country. And CAGEPOTATO, when are you going to hire me to write your web copy? MAKE A MOVE!
Walrus- March 16, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Forrest's got this one.

by decision of course, as if he could finish a fight in any other way.

Did Forrest tap while Evans was beating him up on the ground?

I only wonder because one dude got abused on the MMA Junkie site for saying so and I thought I clearly saw that he did.

when i read the headline i thought it was wandy vs griffin, and then i had to change my underwear.
BrianW- March 16, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Dana seems like a pretty cool dude, but his response to every question is basically "Fucking fuck fighters fuck FUCK fucking bullshit best fight ever fuck."

I lived in Portland as well... the clubs are overprived under valued... crackhoe skanks and preggies... not worth it De Ja Vu ain't half bad, surely not something to look forward to.

Couture and Griffen in Northwest finally is.
T Mac- March 16, 2009 at 4:59 pm
As someone who lived in Portland for 4 years earlier in the decade I need to make a correction to this story; Portland has more strip per capita than Vegas, so the quantity is there, the quality is rather questionable. However if a connoisseur of such establishments Stars in Beaverton is a must see, just so you can say you went to Stars in Beaverton.
PurplePickle- March 16, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I placed a strong, constricting embrace on the mansack of Thiago Silva some time ago, so I might as well continue to hug his nuts for this fight as well. I was hoping he was the next Wandy. Then Machida dove into his chin, knuckles first.
Thiago's GnP is brutal and his mount looks like his ass has gorilla glue on it. He is way too reckless on his feet though.
rokabee- March 16, 2009 at 4:39 pm
@ Jay Smith.

Yes Sir!

I think if Mr. Griffin can make Mr. Thiago play his game, Mr. Griffin will have the upper hand and pull a decision out.
Jay Smith- March 16, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I'm interested to see how Griffin rebounds after losing his belt in his first title defense. I could possible be saying the exact same thing about Rashad in a short while. Does anyone else feel like Lyota Machida might be Bruce Lee reincarnated?

What Do you get when you mix a Promoter like Dana White and a gorrilla?....A Really dumb gorrilla
Darkside- March 16, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Yeah, should be a good fight.
rokabee- March 16, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Griffin vs Silva is very interesting indeed.
