Quinton Jackson to Face Mauricio Rua in UFC Farewell Fight

(The calm before the soccer kicks.)

Quinton Jackson will be getting his wish to leave the UFC — but not before fulfilling the final fight on his contract. It was announced on last night’s episode of UFC Tonight that Jackson will be facing Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at an event to be named later. A follow-up statement on described Jackson as “disgruntled,” and confirmed that the bout is the last of Jackson’s UFC contract and that he and the UFC are expected to part ways afterwards.

Jackson and Rua’s upcoming meeting will be a rematch of their PRIDE Total Elimination 2005 fight, which Shogun won by vicious first-round knockout. Jackson has lobbied for a rematch ever since, and Rua recently expressed interest in the matchup as well. Rua most recently competed at UFC 139, losing a decision to Dan Henderson in what was widely considered to be the 2011 Fight of the Year, while Jackson is riding the first two-fight losing streak of his career, with losses to Jon Jones and Ryan Bader.

After the jump: The full fight video of Rampage vs. Shogun 1.

(Fight starts at the 3:05 mark.)

in the back of my mind ive been feeling like rua is going to retire soon. how can one mans body take so much punishment? i dont think his style of fighting and pattern of injury and recovery makes for the most sustainable way of rockin it.

Love this fight.. I really like Page but if its the same Rampage that showed up for the Bader fight he is gonna be in a lot of trouble.
El Guapo- March 14, 2012 at 12:42 pm
I thought Rampage doesn't want to fight for the UFC anymore? If so, he ain't getting what wants. And if Shogun (Krazy Horse voice)"beat that black aaaassssssss", he REALLY ain't getting what he wants.
RwilsonR- March 14, 2012 at 12:32 pm
I'm with you Guap. This is a great fight. I just have a gut revulsion to giving someone who is being a bitch exactly wha they want. Otherwise, I think it will be a great fight, and Rampage likely wins if he's motivated.
El Guapo- March 14, 2012 at 12:16 pm
And for the record, I have Rampage beating Shogun. I just don't think Rua will ever be the same after that 5 round war he had with Hendo. That shit was brutal! Ditto Dan the Man. Even tho' he won, that had to have taken a huge toll on his body.

How the f'k any MMA fan could hate on this fight is beyond me. If you're a Rampage hater, root for Shogun to whoop his ass. If Rampage whoops Shogun's ass, so what? His contract is up anyway and you know damn well Dana isn't going to re' him up. But most importantly, it's going to be a good fight. If you care more about the drama than the fight itself you need to grab your nuts to make sure they're still there.

The sooner the better. Just get him out. Later, criminal.
The12ozCurls- March 14, 2012 at 9:37 am
I promise you that Rampage comes in at least 10+ pounds over 205. He has clearly checked out and doesn't give a shit anymore. I hope Shogun caves his face in again. Does that make me a bigot?
RwilsonR- March 14, 2012 at 9:32 am
I think this is too much of a gift to Rampage. This is the fight he wanted, and if he wins he leaves with credibility he doesn't deserve. And let's be honest, there is a real possibility Rampage wins this. Rampage is much better than he is often given credit for because half the time he shows up out of shape, under-trained and under-motivated. But Shogun shows up half the time out of shape, under-trained, and injured. If a motivated Rampage fights a semi-trained partially injured Shogun, he will win. I think this is about a 50/50 possibility. Have him fight Tito instead.

Something tells me that this fight doesn’t happen.
intercept440- March 14, 2012 at 7:56 am
i like this fight...but then again i dont...this is rampages last fight in the ufc on his contract...what if (seriously what if) rampage wins in convincing fashion???? that would ultimatly signal that shogun is on the way out as well???
xrefused- March 14, 2012 at 7:38 am
if shogun can re-dedicate himself to training he will fuck up john jones life. the fight with lyoto is proof. and the fact that it took jones 4 rounds to do what shogun did in the first few minutes with rampage. if he doesnt though, he will be like the bj penn of lhw. so much talent but no focus.
Jason Moles- March 14, 2012 at 7:17 am
Shogun is going to completely savage Rampage.
Morningwood- March 14, 2012 at 7:04 am
anyone who beats Rampage is a bigot!
NomadRip- March 14, 2012 at 6:45 am
Damn, no wonder he's so fucked up in the head. Those soccer kicks scramble MY brains every time I see (and hear) them.
J. Jones- March 14, 2012 at 6:36 am
Benjamin, Frankalin, dem ain't nunaya friends! *Copyright Rampage Jackson*
RearNakedSpoon- March 14, 2012 at 6:29 am
Make that pride fight a little shorter, remove the soccer kicks and that's what a fight between Overeem (as Shogun) and Jon Jones (as Rampage) will look like.
Lesnarischamp- March 14, 2012 at 6:27 am
they should make it a FUELTV main event.
BigBear145- March 14, 2012 at 6:14 am
He wont go to strikeforce. Stikeforce is owned by the UFC and dana white is beyond tired of Rampage. Rampage jacksons net worth is only about 8 million because he is terrible with his money and wants more. When you lose two fights in a row, contract negotiations don't go in your favor.
Clyde- March 14, 2012 at 6:06 am
But if Rampage goes to strikeforce, isn't he going to instantly be given a title match, win it and then be poached back by the UFC as all strikeforce champs are?
Bighouse- March 14, 2012 at 5:55 am
Which is probably a smart carrier move. Crushing cans at his age is better then ending up getting knocked out a shitload of times. I don't see him getting the title again and I think he knows that. Maybe he'll go to Strikeforce!?!?
Dizzylittlelord- March 14, 2012 at 5:42 am
love this fight, then rampage can leave and crush cans for the rest of his days
