Quotes of the Weekend: Young, Shaw, Couture + Ortiz

(Kaitlin Young was swept under the rug after her fight with Gina Carano.)

“[T]he doctor actually cleared me to fight the third round but the commission said no. I wanted to continue, my corner wanted to continue. The cut likely would have opened in the third but it was under the eye. If I had to guess, I would say that they didn’t want the visual of a woman with a bloody face on CBS. They also chose not to do a post fight interview with me or to include me in the post fight news conference and after party. I think the reason for that was my beat up appearance after the fight because I was not seriously injured and was completely coherent. I am very disappointed about that but cant help but wonder how people would have responded to that, as stupid as it is.” — Kaitlin Young, on her loss to Gina Carano and resulting media snub.

“Brett is gonna have to learn that it’s about the money…I don’t think [a fight between Brett Rogers and Kimbo Slice] is a fight that I would do. I might do Brett Rogers against [Antonio] Silva…but that’s what makes me a promoter. I appreciate all you guys, but you don’t run me. I’m just saying, I don’t read blogs, I don’t read anything…I run a professional sports franchise. My job is to put asses in seats, build stars, build superstars, not let someone guide me who fights who.” — Gary Shaw, getting a little hot under the collar during an interview with MMARated.

“I’m confident I’ll fight again. I’m also OK with the idea that it may not happen. I may get a bad (court) ruling and I can’t really see myself at this point going back and fighting two more times for the UFC if that’s what the state says I have to do. So there’s the potential I could be done fighting and I’m OK with that too.” — Randy Couture, on his disputed contract status with the UFC.

“Ortiz says he’s ’65 percent’ sure that he’ll begin his own MMA organization. ‘When I was in the UFC, they talked so much about how I wanted to get out of it and how I wanted to stop fighting,’ Ortiz said. ‘It was a bunch of baloney. I still see 3-4 more years of competition left (in me) and I want to build. I want to make a (rival) company neck and neck with the UFC. I think it’s going to be about taking care of the fighters and that’s what I’m going to do.’” — Tito Ortiz in an interview with the Boston Herald.

here is my take on the whole gary shaw thing. yes the man is and idiot what does he think hes running here, the ufc from ten years ago. pushing kimbo like the ufc did tank. bad move the sport has change so much in the last ten years true fight fans dont give a rats ass about street brawlers(and yes i know there people out there that like that). the thing is mr shaw you need to push your real talent they are your future if you want to stay in the mma business. like i said before the tanks and mike tysons of the world are thing of the pass.

I agree with Patsmcd.

Shaw is a fucking idiot. I watched the CBS "spectacle" because I wanted to see the sport grow. But it reminded me of the movie Baseketball or Rocky III with James Brown. Baroni's entrance was a joke. Not a good one.

Guess what Gary? We are the ones that on PPV and bums-in-seats-tickets that support your ego. Sure you have sponsors but you know what? Those sponsors wouldn't be there if they didn't want US to see/buy their shit. You may call the shots but without our support ($$$) you are FUCKING NOTHING. Nothing more than some fat slob trying to get his own screen time. Shit. I'd watch YAMMA before another primetime hypefest. I am so angry right now after reading this quote and the shit about Lawler/Smith being a snoozer.

Go protect your butt-baby Shaw. I was interested to see if you'd set that fight up after the press conference. It's a natural. People would tune in. But lest we all forget, YOU are the big shot promoter. A big cum shot that doesn't know a money-maker when it pops up in front of you like your Viagra-induced boner.

I really feel bad for the lesser-known fighters on the EliteXCrap roster. Many of those actually trying to find a legitimate MMA career. You have to start somewhere, or eat. But fuck, what a train wreck they are on. Sickens me that a title fight is practically given undercard status.

With all the UFC petty shit that goes on, at least they put on a better MMA show.
Elite XC will be the ones failin- June 2, 2008 at 6:30 am
Affliction will do fine and Elite XC is goin down harder than Crush Carano on a sammich. Fuckin heffer cant make wait. Shaw is going to finally be exposed as the worthless leeching preggo trash he is. Arrogant fuck. I hope you read this then die because the truth is so painful.

What does "the commission said no" mean? Only the doctor and the ref has the authority to stop a fight. If the doctor clears you then your good to go. I really don't understand how the fight with Kaitlin was stopped, but with the interview done with a senior NJAC official over at fiveounces the story seems contradictory to what Kaitlin is saying.

Something isn't right here, i think NJAC fucked up and is trying to cover their tracks.

Exactly.....Kimbo has maybe one or two years left to be a marketable fighter. That just isn't enough time to develop a ground game. You can survive a weaker standup (Tito when he was younger), but you cannot survive against the best being a brawler/boxer only. Elite XC knows this so they are trying to squeeze as much out of Kimbo in as short an amount of time as possible. Long term Kimbo would have better served to enter boxing. At least he could fight until his mid 40's ala George Foreman.

Zus your crazy buddy Slice is to old to get real good at anything. his stamina is shit and Brock Lesnar would take him down and ground and pound him within 2 minutes, and thats being generous. I brang up lesnar cause they are both in similar situations.
Zus- June 1, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Shaw doesn't want the Rogers/Kimbo fight to go down because he knows Rogers posses a legitimate threat. I still think that Kimbo has massive potential as an MMA fighter, he just needs more time and needs to work on his ground game. If Shaw would listen to more than his gut then he wouldn't be as fat of a shit and would start promoting a Rogers/Kimbo fight.

Elite XC is the bukake of MMA.
Patsmcd- June 1, 2008 at 7:51 pm
I know everyone hates on Dana White, but to me...Gary Shaw is worse. Shaw loves Kimbo like White loves Liddell. But at lease Dana knows to make fights people want to see. So Mr. Shaw, you better start reading blogs and realize that the best way put asses in the seats is to make the fights the people want to see and not protect your poster boy. I wanted Kimbo to win, but halfway through matched prayed he would lose. It was embarassing to see Kimbo be the main attraction for mixed martial arts that night, and he can't even do a guillotine choke right. You don't see Brock Lesnar getting thrown cans. I'd rather see a guys record go 5-5 against credible opponents than 10-0 against cans and controversy.
JRoc- June 1, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Gary Shaw is a fucking TOOL BOX!!! Next thing you know he'll be putting Slice in the cage with Jimmy Ambriz or Bob Sapp. Last Saturday nights show was a complete misjustice of what MMA is trying to do in the mainstream due to the premature stoppages and the main event "fix". Villasenor, Carano, and a baby's palmful of others are the only top rate fighters in a third rate promotion. Elite SuX C sux my ass.
tim sylvia's pussy- June 1, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Gary Shaw is a fucking idiot... Rogers and Kimbo would be a great fight that everyone wants to see. But he won't let kimbo fight anyone that could potentially beat him. It makes me sick how Elite XC does everything they possibly can to protect kimbo and try to convince everyone that he is unbeatable. Elite XC is a fucking joke
Lil'Doomsday- June 1, 2008 at 6:41 pm

I really wanted to see Brett Rogers fight Kimbo. I think Rogers would KO him in either the first or second...that is, of course, if the fight wouldn't be fixed. :{o FUCK. Some legitimate heavy weight scene Mr. Shaw is running there. Makes the UFC's heavyweight pool look good.
Jemaleddin- June 1, 2008 at 6:33 pm
The Carano/Young fight MAY have been stopped early, but it didn't change the outcome. Carano was crushing that kid, and it was only a matter of time.
Alex- June 1, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Sounds to me like they took any excuse to end the (Carano/Young) fight, probably due to time constraints. I could sort of understand that pressure, but you can't fuck with sporting events like that. It's not a gameshow!
