Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera Rumored for UFC 105 Main Event

(Sometimes it takes a caricature artist to see a person for who they really are. In Randy's case, a kind and joyful champion who suffers from Proteus syndrome. Image courtesy of Ron Chan.)
As negotiations for Henderson/Marquardt remain stalled, the UFC is working on a backup plan for the headliner of UFC 105 (November 14, Manchester). According to Bloody Elbow, reliable sources indicate that Randy Couture will return to the Octagon two-and-a-half months after his decision loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102, to take on Brandon Vera in a light-heavyweight bout. As BE writes:
We're guessing that Rashad refused the fight against Randy because they're now part of the same unified monolithlic MMA camp, Xtreme Greg's, and everybody knows that Xtreme Greg fighters don't fight each other unless there's a title on the line; it's more than a team, it's a brotherhood.
Like Couture, Vera last competed at UFC 102, where he scratched out an unimpressive decision victory over Krzysztof Soszynski. If this fight comes together, it will be Couture's first match at 205 pounds since his knockout loss to Chuck Liddell at UFC 57. Any predictions on the outcome?

Contraband Says:
Randy by ground and pound round 1!!!!!!!!
Remember this and I want a god damn t-shirt when Randy wins
tallkitchenbags Says:
randy by boredom.
steampunk22 Says:
Yeah if anyone pushes the pace it will be couture in this fight, vera has looked tentative in his last few performances. Vera seems to struggle finding his range as well, not nearly as many leg kicks as he used to throw either. I think if vera hesitates with his striking distance he's going to learn that couture's dirty boxing is vastly superior to his own mediocre muay thai. couture will just wear him down.
couture at the end of the second round.
vera's best shot is confidently strike and out range couture. but this has been vera's best shot against every fighter, so, yeah, you've seen his last few fights. atleast couture will engage him and take him down.
RJeezy Says:
Dana White's always giving us fights that no one gives a shit about.
steampunk22 Says:
Well, not always. But I agree there has been more than a few less than amazing matchups in the last little while. This fight is just sort of off it seems. If couture beats vera, no one really cares, it shows maybe he can fight at 205 a little better than people remember, but beating vera is no accomplishment untul vera has put in a few back to back dominating performances. And THAT has not happened in quite some time.
If vera wins, he beats an old man with an increasingly suspect chin who cut a solid amount of weight. Woo hoo.
it does seem sort of pointless in my opinion unless one of them turns in a really amazing performance. and i'd put my money on couture.
Joedirt Says:
Randy... 3rd.
LAS Says:
I guess this saves CP the embarassment of moving Randy out of the number 10 spot at HW, behind Jeff Monson, who got his shit tossed last night (again) by Pedro Rizzo. Looking forward to seeing Rizzo in CP's next set of WTF-inducing top 10 rankings.
RPS13 Says:
seriously, who the fuck wants to see this? my money would be on Randy by KD (where are you doug marshall??) but come on ufc, make a better fight than this
One Two Says:
After hearing talk of a Silva coture fight this is kinda a let down, plus coture deserves better than vera.
UFCSelect.com Says:
2 great fighters, we just hope to see an exciting fight.. KO or Tapout please!!
Goog Says:
I'll go the other way and say that while Vera doesn't interest me in the least, I'll enjoy seeing Randy again so soon. He's not the juggernaut he used to be, but he's still hanging pretty good with the new crop. I don't think he has a long string of fights left in his career - win or lose - so to be able to see him again in a couple months is great. If they wait to finally work out some bullshit "superfight", he could be waiting for months or well into next year. Good on him for getting right back in there and not being an elitist asshole like Silva. He's a legend and he's not going to be disregarded for winning or losing at the level he's currently fighting.
And Vera's a great fighter, too... you just have to hope the old Vera shows up that day and takes it seriously. That's not where I'll be laying my money, though.
reddog Says:
BENS!!! I know youre probably busy watching football, but where is that fucking pic at? This is the biggest deal ever, for real. Ha.
I think Vera is gonna go down like a Jersey crack whore. I wish the old man got to meet Anderson in combat instead.
schnetzler Says:
careful Bens, mmamania is saying this report is coming from your fave journalistic production "The S*n"
Soda Popinski Says:
Matt Hamill doing karaoke > Couture vs Vera
LAS Says:
@Soda
I don't know how to take your comment, because I personally would love to see Matt Hamill do karoake. I would suggest Joan Jett's "Don't You Wanna Touch Me" as his opener.
RearNakedPoke Says:
Matt Hamill singing karaoke = Soda Popinski fighting in a mma fight
Stash Says:
Is there not enough talent in the UFC that they have to keep resorting to Randy Courture?
Soda Popinski Says:
@rearnakedpoke
by that im assuming you mean disaster?
or
a masterpiece.
seriously though, matt hamill singing foreigners " i want to know what love is", i cant think of anything more divine.
Joedirt Says:
Goog.... yup.... you're right... good on Randy for just being a fighter... still fights anyone anytime.
Bovice Says:
Randy Couture's caricature: ROOCCCKYYYY ROOOADDDDD?
LAS Says:
We seem to have some consensus on the enjoyability of watching Matt Hamill sing karaoke, so it makes comparing Couture v. Vera to it less helpful. That's like me saying "getting a tag team blowjob from two hot babes > Couture v. Vera," it just doesn't tell you anything about what I think about the second event, which could still be awesome, just not as awesome as the first.
ReDx Says:
You think Couture would do a free show? He'd be taking a big cut by not getting any PPV revenue from this one.
LBo Says:
Hamill singing "Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto" is my vote.
Also, whoever wins this just knocks their opponents' value down without significantly raising their own. It's a net loss for the 205 div. For THAT reason this is a crappy fight imo.
Mike Milbury Says:
Well, it's good that this is a free show. In no way would I ever pay for this particular "main event" (If it even is the main event). Couture better pummel Brandon "The Truth [is I fight to not lose and thank god UFC needs me for an eventual Philippines show]" Vera.
