(Retired man walkin’. Props to MMA Scraps.)
Among the notable writers and fighters currently eulogizing Chuck Liddell‘s career is UFC light-heavyweight champ Rashad Evans, who gave some quotes to FightHype about what the Iceman’s UFC 97 loss meant to him personally (props to BloodyElbow for the tip):
I’ll refrain from making any young lion/old lion analogies, but yes, we’ve finally seen the last gasp of the Tito/Randy/Chuck era of the UFC, and it’ll be a somber week for some MMA fans. The new generation has taken over in full force, led by fighters like Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, GSP, and Brock Lesnar. And maybe one of these days, Jon Jones is going to spinning-backfist Rashad Evans into a living death, and we’ll start talking about how great Sugar used to be until he started slowing down just enough for younger guys to pick him apart. It’s the circle of life. Still, this claim that Liddell was just frontin’ about working on the holes in his standup game? Well damn, dude. If you hope to hang with fighters who are more than ten years younger than you, you have to put in the work. The UFC front office doesn’t need any loafers.

commentshahaha i laughed so hard at that
Quiet and silent under the arena and "after the glory".
Also, this is one of the best comment sections. Props to all. Some funny shit here.
So can we say that this is it for sure?
How can Liddell fall so fast? I belive it's more than just his time. It's medical for sure because he bleeds from the ears man.
Very impressive! What were you, a Communications major?
Since you have taken Rashad's meaning so literally, perhaps your own education should be the one in question. Gold is hardly one of the "basic elements of the universe." Those would be the first 18 elements, which have three nice, stable electron shells. It isn't even one of the 18 transition metals that follow with slightly varied electron shell configurations.
And since you want to parse words on his statement, gold is an extremely difficult metal to make given the high binding energies of the nucleic particles, and thus is rarely formed in small quantities near the end of a star's life, or extremely small amounts at the beginning of the universe. It would "stay" gold in the sense that it has a stable, non-degrading configuration, but would likely become fused into something heavier upon its eventual end in another star's demise, rendering it no longer gold.
So get your own education in order before playing smart-ass with Rashad's obvious attempt at paraphrasing.
My cockles, they have been tickled.
Now, had he offered the allegory poised by Robert Frost, "nothing gold can stay" it would have made his high school english teach proud.
Shame to see him go, but I wouldn't want to see him stick around and end up in a 10 fight losing streak against increasingly mediocre to lame opponents. He still wants to fight the best in the division and it's sadly now clear that he can't. Sorry to see you go Chuck, we'll always have Tito.
Silva vs. Maia. 5 rounds of ditty steps and jabs
I HATE YOU ALL
Well, actually it was more of a text message that Florian sent to GSP, who told Nate Marquardt, who let it slip to Keith Jardine, who passed the info along to Rashad. But it started with Kenny...
This is all a ploy by Chuck and Dana so Chuck can come out of retirement to fight and the UFC can make billions off off his return.. Just like Randy. I'm telling ya, he will be retired and un-retired with-in 9 months..
