Rashad Evans Says ‘It Ain’t No Thang’ That The UFC is Giving Another One of His Title Shots Away to Machida

(“It is what it is…or somethin’ like that.”)

Seemingly perpetual number one UFC light heavyweight contender Rashad Evans took the diplomatic approach today when addressing the news that Lyoto Machida will be leapfrogging him to a shot at the promotion’s current 205-pound champion, Jon Jones at UFC 140 in December. In a statement released by his management group, Authentic Sports Management, Evans explained that that the injured thumb he incurred in his UFC 133 bout with Tito Ortiz back in August will likely require an additional three weeks of rehab before he can resume training, meaning his camp would only be six-and-a-half weeks, leaving him without sufficient time to prepare for such an important bout.

“After my last fight against Tito Ortiz, I dislocated my right thumb, which required it to be set back in place and held with pins. 24 hours ago, my physician removed the pins,” Evans explained. “At that time, I learned that it would require another three weeks of rehabilitation before engaging in any exercise or training that would require the use of my hand.”

Evans also mentioned that Dana White called him to let him know what his plans were and that he gave the UFC president his blessing.

“Dana White and I spoke earlier today, and I fully understand his decision to put Machida against Jones for the title at UFC 140. Given the rehabilitation time I require for my dislocated thumb, I would not be 100 percent ready by December 10,” Evans said. “The UFC has to keep making fights that entertain the fans. I would have done the same thing as Dana in his position. I’m asking for the fans to support me as I rehabilitate my hand, and I promise I will be back fighting very quickly.”

Knowing Rashad’s luck, the winner of the bout will likely sustain an injury that will sideline him for most of 2012 and Rashad will take a fight with Phil Davis in the meantime and lose.

I did say it was just as likely that Dana wanted him on the card in toronto, and in all seriousness that's most likely the case considering all the other champs and big names are already booked for fights just before or right after UFC 140, but it's so much more fun to think that Jones is secretly masterminding a plot to keep rashad from ever getting his title shot.

Say what you want about fighting a less than perfect opponent, but Machida looked damn good in the Randy fight. It was like he had got his spunk back. Randy couldn't tag him for the whole of 1.5 rounds that they fought. Before that, in his fight against Rampage (which i still think he should've won) and Rua (the second fight), he looked out of his element. First fight he was trying to be overly agressive, which is not his game. Second fight he was a little too cautious. But i think those back to back losses really helped him develop as a fighter and he bounced back nicely against Randy. Jones is a different beast though. I don't see where Machida can hurt him, not unless he really works on his strength. Plus, no one's really seen Machida fight off his back so that's a big question mark. You never know though. Maybe he's gonna pull something completely ridiculous out of the bag. Something Master Segal's working on with him right now.

I really don't get it. Jones vs Rashad would have been the biggest fight of the year. Hype, hatred, the whole shebang. I dont get Rashad being fucked over again just for an extra 3-4 wks of rehab.
Interested in seeing Machida vs Jones but still think its bullshit they are pushing it through.
Rashad must have taken a Cleveland steamer on Dana's wife.

I bet he's fighting because Dana told him it was important to have a big main event for December, and as Tito and Randy can likely tell Jones, your life is much easier and more lucrative when you please the boss. Given the expected crowd size in Toronto, I'm sure Dana promised Jones a nice payday if he took this fight.
But I'd like to think danomite is right - much funnier to think of him just fucking with Rashad. Rashad trying to put on a calm front while he nervously twists his low-hanging nipples behind the scenes with great frustration.

DAMN! The hate is thick in here. I mean sure if you look at ALL of those losses Rashad has on his record ... oh wait, he has one loss to a Machida that hasn't been seen since. Rampage is the first guy that Bones has faced that was even remotely agile enough to get out of his was and as a result most of the flashy stuff that Bones is known for missed. Rashad has much better movement than Page and his wrestling is far better than just about any 205'er whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

I like both fighters and expect this to be a great matchup but you guys are looking at this like a bunch of jealous high school girls.

I'm not saying he's doing it because he thinks rashad can beat him. I think he's just doing it to fuck him over. Either that or he needs a new Bentley. Because if he really did have some injuries now would be the time to take some time off and let them heal. He's already fought three times this year, so no one is gonna blame him for taking a break. He made enough just on this last fight to support himself for a long time, so either he really, really, really likes fighting/money/Bentleys or he's trying to fight as soon as possible to fuck with rashad.

Jon Jones Def Lyoto Machida Crane kick KO CALLING THAT SHIT NOW!!!
RwilsonR- October 6, 2011 at 5:29 pm
Jones is ducking Rashad? Jones is taking this fight quickly after a previous fight, and probably has more injuries than having a dislocated fucking thumb, but is still fighting. Rashad is the one who refuses to fight unless 100% healthy, and that is what has cost him his title shots. Besides, this prolongs Rashad's relevancy for a few months longer, before he gets embarrassed by Jones, then again by Machida. Rashad is the number 5 LHW, no higher, and presents little challenge to Jones.
danomite- October 6, 2011 at 5:19 pm
I think Jones is ducking Rashad just to fuck with him at this point. 3 1/2 extra weeks of rehab? that means they go from ufc 140 to ufc 141, maybe 142. they never even officially announced the fight between rashad and jones did they? tickets haven't even gone on sale yet. Maybe Dana wanted Jones in toronto so he could sell more seats, but they're not even having it in the Rogers centre so it's likely going to be sold out regardless. It's just as likely that Jones begged dana for a fight as soon as possible so that either rashad wouldn't be as well prepared or in hopes that rashad wouldn't be able to fight at all.
RwilsonR- October 6, 2011 at 4:45 pm
Jones vs Machida is much more interesting to me, as Jones would easily have his way with Rashad. He may well easily beat Machida, too, but at least Machida stands a chance of touching Jones chin, which is something I'm still waiting to see.

J3t... That wasn't me in the last post, it was some hispanic sounding guy who hacked into my account. Danga told me lots of good things about your mother- she's a very, very, VERY giving lady for instance, she's EXTREMELY flexible, she's nice and moist, just to a name a few- so I would never disrespect her like that. If you'd like, give me her number and I'll extenze.. Extend!.. I'll extend my apologies personally.

Art Gibs- October 6, 2011 at 4:14 pm
wouldn't the better approach be to use this as a promotion opportunity and say jones is ducking him yet again?
J3t- October 6, 2011 at 3:48 pm
Jon Jones was just gonna knock his jaw looser than El Guapo's moms kunt anyway =/
StinkFacer- October 6, 2011 at 3:48 pm
I'm not a Rashad fan, but I respect the fact hes taking this well. I really think he stands the most legitimate chance of beating Jones, because of his strong wrestling base. Machida has a punchers chance, however, his elusive style is going to be a nightmare for him against the range Jones brings to the table. And before anyone tells me about Rampage's wrestling, or Mat Hammill....take a second to realize that they're not on the same level as Evan's. Also, i guarantee Evan's is not the same fighter that fough Machida. He's only gotten better, and Machida seems to be sliding. He now knows hes not invincible, and you can tell it's put a slight pause in his step.

It's easy to break your thumb when you have it stuck up your ass and the boss asks you to take a seat.
