Referees Beware: DREAM Signs Gilbert Yvel

In an apparent attempt to boost their anemic ratings, DREAM has signed notoriously dirty fighter Gilbert “Hurricane” Yvel to a three-fight contract. The Dutch striker is expected to face Alistair Overeem in the near future.

Yvel took the #7 spot in our list of the 10 Most Despicable People in MMA for his trio of DQs — one for biting Karimula Barkalaev in 1998, one for eye-gouging Don Frye at PRDE 16 in 2001, and once for knocking out a referee during a match against Atte Backman in 2004; video of that one is above. Yvel last competed in May — at an event in Holland ironically titled “Gentlemen Fight Night” — picking up his fifth-straight win with a knockout of Michael Kita.

Speaking of despicable fighters, UFC/Cage Rage brawler-turned-armed robber Lee “Lightning” Murray will be immortalized in the feature film Breaking the Bank, which will be based on his involvement in the $92 million raiding of Securitas AB in 2006 — the largest cash heist in history.

Hey what about Mike Tyson?

The guy is a convicted rapist, bit an opponents ear, Tried to break another fighters arm, attacked an elderly civilian and a host of other things and yet to this very day he gets a rapturous reception whenever he's at a fight and makes money on the after dinner circuit.

But hey, he's Tyson ain't he?

Joey Barton (Football/soccer player): Viciously attacked a teammate, stood on another teammates balls, stubbed a cigarette in another colleagues eye and has had 2 stints in the slammer.

If those guys get away with it then so can Gilbert.

People like that are bad for this sport in general. They should be banned, something like that shouldn't be taken lightly and he should have been made an example as to why one doesn't "knock out" a ref. This shows, no self control, and lack of discipline.

I'm in agreement C-Bus. Professional (and I use the term loosely with some of these guys) athletes should be held just as accountable for assault as any other person working a job. And this doesn't apply just to MMA. How many times have we heard about football or basketball players assaulting other players and only getting a fine and benched for a game or two?

That would be akin to me getting banned from a refinery for 2 weeks for assaulting a safety officer or employee. When in reality, even the loss of my job would be the least of my worries after an incident like that.

Personally, I dont think Gilbert Yvel should be allowed to compete in MMA competition at ALL. Period.

This is my point: I work as a locksmith by profession. If I were to use my skills to break into someone's house and steal their shit, technically I should have my license revoked, and there should be some jailtime involved.

Gilbert Yvel used his skills as a martial artist to knock out a REFEREE. He did so intentionally, and without any remorse for doing so. He even kicked the guy when he was on the ground. Now, given these circumstances, don't you think it fair to completely ban Yvel from professional competition? Or at least a 5 year parole period during which if he fucks up again, he's gone for life? I mean, this guy ASSAULTED a civilian. ON PURPOSE. Personally I think the piece of shit should be put in jail for assault and battery. But I suppose that's why I'm not in charge of such procedings.

Yvel is a dick for sure, but every time I see his name, all I can think of is that freakin' vicious headkick he landed on Goodridge. Ouch.
