Renzo Gracie Likes the Underdogs at UFC 112

(Renzo Gracie vs. Frank Shamrock, 2/10/07)

Matt Hughes is, according to some oddsmakers, about a 5-1 favorite to beat Renzo Gracie at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi this weekend. Maybe that’s because of how easily Hughes smoked Royce Gracie at UFC 60, or how he managed to survive an early scare and ride out a decision win over Gracie student Matt Serra at UFC 98. Or, then again, maybe it’s just because Renzo hasn’t fought in over three years (what you see in the video above is the unsatisfying result of that outing) and is bound to have a little bit of ring rust at 43 years old. Regardless, Gracie told in a recent live chat that he thinks he’ll beat Hughes with his superior jiu-jitsu (what, you thought he was going to say punching power?), but his fight isn’t the only one on the card where he’s predicting an upset:

"I don’t want to fight at 155 just because I don’t want to fight the new champion, Frank Edgar. I believe Edgar is going to beat B.J. Penn. He has all the tools to do it."

Just in case you were wondering, Edgar is an even bigger underdog than Gracie. But hey, this is the same guy who predicted Serra’s upset win over Georges St. Pierre. That’s got to count for something, right?  Or absolutely nothing at all?

If by "give Penn a fight" you mean show up to get tooled for a few rounds, then yeah.

@ Parchy, pardon me, but I think Lesnar pretty much has the eggplant look already, maybe pummel Brock until his face looks like, mmmm, Salisbury steak, dropped from about 25 stories, I am so sayin my prayers every night that Carwin gives it to Lesnar in the exact same manner as he did to Mir, I feel there may be a little bit more opposition from Lesnar though, (and I'm not 100% convinced thats how God works, but I'm givin it a try)

@Fried Taco - is Phil Nurse workin' Edgar's corner? Or was this a joke about Frankie getting fucked by BJ?
PERPATRAITOR- April 6, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Renzo is a great teacher but a bad fighter. i think it's a conditioning problem. or striking problem. or fragile bone problem...
Fried Taco- April 6, 2010 at 2:00 pm
I wonder if vaseline is in Edgar's bag of tools...

Yes, indeed, let Carwin pummel Brock Lesnar's face so it looks like an eggplant

No odds could convince me to bet against BJ. Whereas GSP at least has a suspect chin, BJ just can't suffer a flash knockdown or freak submission -- he basically has to be outworked. So, you have to believe that Edgar will be the better fighter consistently over five rounds, which he won't.

I still say Florian has the best shot at him at 155, do in large part to his elbows and the hope that a cut stops the fight. Also, Florian has the mental discipline to grind out a boring decision win, which in this case would be nothing to scoff at.

I know Renzo said he made a huge bet on Serra Vs. GSP I, but I'm interested to know if he decided to repeat that the second time around.

ReX13...that's comedy right there!

I love Renzo and all that but I don't think he needs to worry about fighting the champion if he drops down to 155
ReX13- April 6, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Thanks man! You reminded me that i have something to do.

Dear Shane Carwin,

Please beat up Brock Lesnar...
parchy mcthirst- April 6, 2010 at 12:05 pm

that's pretty damn hilarious, but you're seemingly too infatuated with the demise of Matt Hughes...not that I disagree or just of resembles Frank Mir and his views towards Brock Lesnar. And we all know how that's going for Frank...

"He has all the tools to do it"
-R. Gracie

I enjoy Renzo as a fighter, hope he beats Hughes, but he is blinded by his dislike(I understand why) for B.J. Penn.
I remember Kenflo(My boy) had all the tools to do it....Diego had all the tools to do it also.
There is absolutely no tool on frankie's belt or in his tool box that B.J. has not already mastered.
If your letter to Renzo was a petition, I would sign it gladly.

Nobody is beating BJ Penn this year unless BJ gets injured.

Matt Hughes chin has been suspect in his last few fights. I don't think he'll get submitted, but any striker would have a great chance.

You think you can predict fights Mr Henzowe Graysey?
Well I predict Penn winning by forehead vagina in round 4.
ReX13- April 6, 2010 at 10:45 am
Dear Henzo,

Please beat Matt Hughes up and take his wife as your own. Adopt his daugher, and distribute your piss upon his upturned face. Pull down the stones of his home, and sow the earth with bone and brine.

Thank you for your attention in this matter,

Well... Renzo might be a little biased, considering he and his brother Ralph have declared a vendetta against Penn, and Renzo has trained Edgar in the past. But I hope he is right. Edgar has upset people before, and he might be able to outwork Penn for a decision if he can take three rounds. Doubtful, but Edgar would be a great underdog champion.
skeletor- April 6, 2010 at 10:39 am
Just always say the underdog is going to win then he can say I told you so. Either way I like him better thenHughes, but he will probably lose this fight of the who gives a fuck.

i don't think edgar will beat penn
Nut Puncher 9000- April 6, 2010 at 10:38 am
Although Penn is a MONSTER at 155, I have to agree that Edgar does have the skill set to give Penn a fight.
