Report: ‘Aldo vs. Faber’ Draws 150k-200k PPV Buys

According to new reports on Heavy and f4wonline, early estimates indicate that Saturday’s "Aldo vs. Faber" event generated between 150,000 and 200,000 buys. In other words (assuming the estimates are accurate), the WEC’s first attempt at pay-per-view was a smashing success. A couple points to put those numbers in perspective:

— 150k-200k is not too far off from the 240,000 buys that UFC 110 pulled in, with its roster full of MMA stars.
— Affliction did no more than 100,000 buys with its first event.

As a starting point for WEC-product on pay-per-view, it’s very encouraging, and proves that Zuffa knows how to promote and package their fights. Now that fans know the WEC is worth their money, Zuffa is in an even better position for the next time they want to charge us. Of course, the lineup has to be just as compelling as "Aldo vs. Faber"’s. At this point, what could the WEC offer to make you shell out another $45? Urijah Faber vs. Miguel Torres as a co-headliner seems like a no-brainer to me…

– Urijah Faber’s leg is still nasty-looking.
– Ratings for the "Aldo vs. Faber" prelims broadcast on Spike shot up during the Garcia vs. Jung fight.

I'm glad real fans like me knew that this PPV was going to be successful. If some of you were as into the sport as me, you would know too.

@side.check.kid- urijah is the only man to go the distance with aldo. he got caught by brown in the first fight and had the misfortune of braking one hand and dislocating a finger in the other, he managed to go the distance with brown on that one and im not sure how much u know about this sport but without ur hands its hard to ko a person or even set up a good take down. he didnt beat aldo but that isnt exactly the easiest task. fabers not washed up, aldos just that good.

I haunt dead threads-- wooo woooooooo- I posted a long and overblown post relating the WEC to a division of Volkswagen, and I stand by that post. With two thirds of the weight divisions and 55% of the roster, they simply are playing us for chumps by charging us the same price. If they can somehow manage to pull more than one or two fight cards in a year that gave us WEC 48, thats one thing, but charging the same price for WEC and UFC is ludicrous. Pendajos...

@clyde-it actually wouldve hurt them alot. im sure as business men they know it wouldve helped to let people know these guys r wec fighters. but they are under contract with vs. who wouldnt have liked the idea of spike getting the prelim fights and some other shit i think and there probably wouldve been a lawsuit somewhere. and if they didnt lose the name then no one wouldve been able to see the fight alot of people are comparing to griffin vs. bonner until after the main event and there were probably some people who were convinced enough to buy the ppv because of the prelim fight. so basically they made the better decision to get rid of the name.

WEC needs to either do more PPVs, or merge into the UFC completely. After all the great shows they've given us for free, you can't look at what some of the guys in the UFC are making for fights that don't provide anywhere near the entertainment and say these guys don't deserve better pay.

I for one salute the little guys and their great effort on Saturday. I don't think there's been a better event this year. I would probably have been willing to pay for most of the WEC cards that have been free on Versus, because I have yet to see a bad event from them. Sure, not every single fight is as insane as the zombie's was, but I don't think there's another organisation that has a higher proportion of good/great fights in each event than the WEC.

Wouldn't have hurt them to mention the name once or twice during the show mind you. I fit it in 3 times in just those two paragraphs. Bruce almost called it wrong during the first fight when he said "scheduled for three rounds in the U... Lightweight division". Let the people know Zuffa.

people were giving wec too little credit about being worth the money. wec has always been pretty exciting in my opinion. at one point alot of people didnt know who the most of the ufc fighters were besides chuck liddel and little by little they started getting into it more and more and now everyone knows ufc's the biggest mma organization. wec has pretty much always been worth watching in my opinion but because it isnt as well known people figure its not worth paying for. people who knew about it got to see it for free and they enjoyed it. but now that they would like a bigger reward for there hard work everyone seems to be complaining. these guys train for months to put on a good show like other fighters in other organizations that get paid alot more than they do. i think they put on one of the best cards ive ever seen and they finally got what they deserved.

I considered purchasing the PPV during the korean zombie fight on Spike, but then I remembered I have Sopcast, so I watched for free!
jimbonics- April 27, 2010 at 3:15 pm
I bet that leonard zombie fight on spike spurred sales!

I wonder what you call a slobber-knocker with midgets...

WEC talent pool is deeper than the Strikeforce pool.... just saying.

I think they can do a PPV every 2-3 months and have very compelling matchups.

I hope this will raise the WEC pay grades as well.
Ratel- April 27, 2010 at 2:56 pm
they have to merge with UFC. that way it will enrich the talent pools for all weight classes, and it'll weed out the pretenders who are scraping by in the smaller promo.
knucklesamitch- April 27, 2010 at 2:45 pm
that pic of Jenna's leg is horrible. Shame on you Tito!
THE DEMON- April 27, 2010 at 2:44 pm
WEC, being basically second-line UFC, would do a whole lot better with PPV buys if they would only charge maybe $19.95 or $29.95 even. Not to say they did badly on this one, but its hard for a working person to buy 2 full price PPV's a month. Plus, as is mentioned in this article, the talent pool isn't NEARLY as deep as the UFC. A casual fan is going to have a hard time justifying paying that for a card full of people they've likely never heard of, versus paying that for a card with some they have heard of.
Kid Clam Curtains- April 27, 2010 at 2:02 pm
Yay lil' guys!
BENedictArnoldFOWLKES- April 27, 2010 at 1:55 pm
I love watching FREE WEC and I did buy the ppv but that would get old real quick having to buy UFC & WEC every month. And I am very wealthy. j/k I'M BROKE BITHCES!!!!
MMAMoneyLine- April 27, 2010 at 1:49 pm
Aldo v. Gamburyan
Henderson v. Roller
Faber v. Torres
Jorgensen v. Benavidez
Cerrone v. Njokuani II
Garcia v. Jung II
Bowles v. Page

Might be the best PPV card they could put together without blowing their load on one card. Maybe they could do something like this for WEC 50 and hold guys like Varner, Brown, Cruz, Grispi, McCullough etc for 51
Nut Puncher 9000- April 27, 2010 at 1:48 pm
The problem is that the WEC doesnt have the talent pool to repeat last weekends card.

IMO Faber MUST be on every PPV for WEC in order for it to get decent buys and his stock is dropping. Jose Aldo is a destroyer but he was not exciting and any casual fan that ordered wont be rushing off to see him again any time soon..

Marcer- April 27, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Well-deserved. One of the best shows in a long time.
