Report: Matt Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo Added to UFC 137

As first reported by ESPN, a heavyweight meeting between undefeated rising star Matt Mitrione and veteran striker Cheick Kongo has been slated for UFC 137: St. Pierre vs. Diaz. Both fighters are coming off of KO victories at UFC on Versus 4 on June 26th; Mitrione dominated Christian Morecraft for two rounds before ending the bout with a stunning walkoff knockout, while Kongo pulled off one of the greatest comeback wins in MMA history against Pat Barry, surviving two knockdowns before landing a Hail Mary shot that turned Barry’s light out.

Mitrione vs. Kongo is a booking that immediately made sense in the aftermath of that night. Mitrione deserves a step up from the kind of entry-level competition he’s been getting so far in his UFC career — and the fact that Mitrione and Pat Barry are training partners at Roufusport gives the Meathead/Kongo matchup a nice little revenge hook. So who takes this one: The rapidly-improving rookie, or the resilient veteran?

I found the below list on Fakebook today. Yes, Loki's got it 100% correct with Kongo being the gatekeeper for the lower ranks. If one wants to talk about those who are title worthy, from the List below I might draw that line at Frank Smear. I discounted "interim titles." If you think such titles matter, then slide my line down one notch, below Toni Rigo Gueria.

MEATHEAD! i didnt like him too much on the show, but man is he a true fighter. hears voices, acts lik a crazy hobo, how can u NOT like the guy. i love crazy people because they are honest, i hate the french because they are . . . well . . . french. Kongo is still a beast. MMA will dominate all other sports in 10 years.

How can Kongo's greater experience as a striker be the only thing that Mitrione has going for him?! Wouldn't that mean that Kongo has the advantage?

Id have to agree with Loki, Kongo is the ultimate HW gatekeeper. With that said, I hope meat head can whoop his ass! I don't see Mitrione becoming champ anytime soon, but the guy doesn't seem tested with all these up-and-comers. I think if Mitrione can beat Kongo and work his way into fighting the elites, hes gonna get his chin tested and really get motivated to train harder. This is the only way I see him getting close to a title shot...but Im getting WAY to ahead of myself here!

Meathhead is peaking right now, he is on a tear. However if sloppy but resilient Beltran can go the distance and tag Meat, then i know Kongo will be able to touch him. Meathead is a very hittable boxer, i dont doubt that Kongo will test his chin.

Im hoping Kongo gets him. I dislike MEat after all his Shannanigans with Ortiz.

Mitrione can take a hit whilst Kongo, bless him, gets fuckin ko'd by everyone in the last 3 yrs. Pat Barry is cursed I have no idea how he lost that fight i don't know how! I can'tsee how Congo who I like unlike Mitrione who I'd like to donkey punch win this fight, if I'm wrong happy days.............Aaaaasaaaaaa!

This will be Meathead all the way. Kongo, in accordance with French custom, will surrender long before he even hops on the plane to go to the fight.
Also, Pat Barry fucking sucks. The sooner you guys admit that to yourselves the better. Yeah, he's a cool enough guy but so is Dennis Leary and that kid whose in all the Transformers movies.

Kongo is the ultimate Heavyweight gatekeeper. If Meathead can get past him he will be a legitimate contender as Kongo beats everyone who isnt an elite.
