Report: Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama to Headline UFC 120

(We’re a little freaked-out too, Mike.)

UFC 120 (October 16th, London) is one of those international events that will be shown for free on Spike, so we didn’t really expect a massive headliner, but still, this is a bit of a slap in the nuts. Fighters Only reports that the card’s main event will be a middleweight contest between soap-opera star Michael Bisping and Yoshihiro Akiyama. Yes, that Yoshihiro Akiyama, the one who was submitted by Chris Leben last weekend. Akiyama deserves a headlining spot about as much as Mark Hunt deserves a UFC contract after going winless for four years.* Of course, the prospect of Bisping beating up a foreign fancy-boy will probably be enough to get the locals to come out. We’re just glad we don’t have to pay for this one. The rumored UFC 120 lineup currently looks like this…

Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
Dan Hardy vs. Carlos Condit
Cheick Kongo vs. Travis Browne
John Hathaway vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Spencer Fisher vs. Kurt Warburton
Rob Broughton vs. Vinicius Quieroz
Alexander Gustafsson vs. Cyrille Diabaté
James Te-Huna vs. Tom Blackledge

* Turns out, the UFC contractually owes Mark Hunt fights due to their 2007 purchase of PRIDE.

Kongo? I look forward to watching him lean against the fence and lay on his back for 3 rounds. Guy looks impressive but he has zero ground game, and little standup for that matter.

Other than the Hardy fight this is the card of 'close but not quite there' fighters.

I see a few good fights on there so I am pumped for it. I do not like Bisping so this will be even better for me if he gets beat. Watch this card be a thousand times better than 119 (even though I enjoyed some of those fights as well).

I know that Bisping is the face of British MMA and all, but Hardy vs. Condit is a fight I actually want to see, and Hardy is Bisping's British Poster Boy Heir Apparent. Why not make Hardy vs. Condit the main event?

So what was the last UFC to do under 200,000 PPV buys? I think it was probably sometime before UFC 52: Liddell vs. Couture 2. Well, it's been a nice run Zuffa. This one is gonna be somewhere around Affliction in terms of PPV buy rates.

@PortlandMMA

You forgot the points I made about streaming or watching it in a sports bar... we're not in the 90's anymore.

And f#cking LOL if you're use to paying 60 dollars for PPV anyway. I mean like, you could ALMOST own an Affliction tee for that sorta money.... /rolleyes

British crowd is always good, so at least we won't get any booing for watching decent grappling.

OK I'm underwhelmed, but on the other hand I am excited to see dan hardy back in action, as he is now certainly one of my top fav's.
Go Dan...the rest? yeah ok, I'll watch, but I won't drink a beer or anything.

This fight card is awesome. Completely titties with a side of beers. If it had a main event, I would watch it on ppv. At someone elses house. But it is pretty awesome.

bisbing is really scary to me ever since hendo. every time he gets touched i cringe up. and it looks like cecil p. got this one right, hardy condo is def. worth the money alone.

@Almost North

Thanks. figured as much.
Almost North- July 9, 2010 at 1:41 pm
It sucks less. TV is still one nationwide coast to coast assblasting.
Morningwood- July 9, 2010 at 1:36 pm
off topic. or kind of not since people are arguing free or not free. I have comcast as a cable provider and I completely hate them. The new digital device prevents me from using my Tivo. Forcing me to rent a dvr from them for 25.99 per month. They are rapists!!

I imagine sattelite tv sucks as well. Am I correct?

Leben>Bisping now that he's not an alcoholic roid abuser. And it would be cool if they gave him a rematch to prove it at 120. But no, we get to see another unimpressive Japanese fighter in the main event.
ianisthewalrus- July 9, 2010 at 12:05 pm
hey now,

okay, this is a terrible headline fight. neither man is headline material... but the ufc has a big dick for bisping when they fight in the UK, and for all the dumb stuff that they do, this is really minimal.

on the upside, i think both fighters are well matched. when i first saw this my thought was "wow these two are perfect for each other"

just a shame it will be the headline, but its a free card... *sigh*
PortlandMMA- July 9, 2010 at 11:58 am
@ ytrebil "I never understand the argument for not complaining about 'free' fights. In the UK we get the broadcasts free anyway"

Thats because you get the fights free anyhow you genius. There is a big difference between not paying for something and paying $59.99 for a shitty card.

And this card looks pretty damn good to me for free. I'm not too excited about the main event but Hardy vs Condit and Don Hyun Kim vs Hathaway sounds pretty good to me.
Sudos KFC- July 9, 2010 at 11:56 am
I really hope Akiyama dies a slow and painful (and very figurative) death. He was the only fight I missed on the entire UFC fight card parlay 20 to win 1500.

fighting for the japanese my ass, you were 20 seconds away and I could see daylight in a choke that ammy's wouldnt have tapped to knowing they were about to win the fight. Go train with Joe Warren Akiyama, grow some heart!
xjoshx138- July 9, 2010 at 11:47 am
what a bullshit card. we get maybe 2 cards year and because we're not american or sheikhs giving dana a shit load of money (TWO TITLE FIGHTS) i love akiyama. I'd be honored to see him fight. but he doesnt deserve a headline fight. Cheers ufc!

"Jizzbing" - Classic!
cagefightmon- July 9, 2010 at 11:27 am
AGREED . . . . .. CRAPPY CARD!
thebassmaster- July 9, 2010 at 11:24 am
I'm actually really excited for this card!
I think Bisping and Akiyama will be a war
Hardy and Condit will be a war
Kongo and Browne will show us where Browne really lies in the division
Hathaway and Kim should be a good fight as well, let's hope Hathaway's takedown defense is up to par

And Diabate/Gustafson is a guaranteed KO!
Almost North- July 9, 2010 at 11:15 am
If Sexyama wants a bone thrown his way, I'm sure the entire forum at Sherdog would be happy to help.
Jugger- July 9, 2010 at 11:14 am
"Why does the UFC owe this guy ANYTHING?"

I guess I'm just putting myself in Akiyama's shoes. Here I'm on a 12 fight winning streak, I win my UFC debut, I'm a huge star in Asia, and the UFC tells me I'm going to fight Wanderlei Silva, another huge star in Japan. Then, for three months I study and train for Silva. Then, less than two weeks before I fight a personal hero, after my training camp is already wrapped up, I'm told I'm fighting a very dangerous no-name that I don't know, that I've never seen tape of, that is completely unknown in home country.

If I was Akiyama, I'd be pretty bummed about that last-minute change, and I would hope the UFC would throw me a bone in the future.

Almost North- July 9, 2010 at 11:13 am
Does anyone know is Kurt Warburton is related to Patrick Warburton? If so I have a secret message for him from his teeth.
DangadaDang- July 9, 2010 at 11:06 am
@Almost North

Having Kim in a fight is a way to ensure it won't be fight of the night, same with Bisping
Almost North- July 9, 2010 at 10:53 am
Nah Bisping already settled that with his decisive run and poke style.
2DaDeath- July 9, 2010 at 10:48 am
So does this mean Leben>Bisping ?
