Report: UFC Returns to Brazil in November 2011

(Vitor Belfort vs. Wanderlei Silva at UFC Brazil. Jesus, they’ve been talking about "the old Vitor" since 1998??)

According to a new report, the UFC will make a long-overdue return to Brazil in November 2011. GracieMag.com sources claim that the event will be held at the HSBC Arena in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, a 15,000-seat venue that will host the basketball and gymnastics events at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The rumored event would mark the first time the UFC has held a card in Brazil since "Ultimate Brazil" in October 1998, which featured Frank Shamrock defending his middleweight belt against John Lober, Pat Miletich becoming the UFC’s first welterweight champion after outpointing Mikey Burnett, Pedro Rizzo’s UFC debut against Tank Abbott, and Vitor Belfort‘s legendary knockout of Wanderlei Silva. With a renewed rivalry brewing between Belfort and Silva, we can’t think of a better occasion for a rematch.

Semi-related: Speaking of Pedro Rizzo…the three-time UFC heavyweight title challenger is currently preparing for a fight against former champ Tim Sylvia, which will take place in the War on the Mainland promotion sometime early next year. According to Rizzo, "Dana White mentioned that the winner should get another chance in the Ultimate Fighting Championship." Both fighters are currently riding three-fight win streaks.

@ ccman - Sorry bud, but you are alone in that. Did you see the pics of Wandy's face afterwards? One eye was completely shut and had a massive hematoma on it, and he genrally looked like Tina Turner after she mouthed off to Ike. Although, I can kinda see where you are coming from, because the camera work was pretty crappy in actually showing where the blows landed.

Still, this would be a great rematch to see.

Vitor is good i would be hard pressed to say he is great. The video above does him no justice. I think AS destroys VB! VB been out the game too long and is a walking injury.

Vitor beats WS again no problem. It is possible that he beats AS. Looks like a trend with the belts changing hands. Don't think that is going to happen in December though... or at least I really hope not.

Vitor was a good boxer, and showed a ton of promise in his one fight, and if memory serves almost boxed for Brazil in the Olympics.

I always thought this fight was a kinda early stoppage, Looks like a ton of hits landed but absolutely no damage and Wandi had his wits solidly when 'saved'.... i know, i am alone in this thought.

Rex,

You really have to be careful about what kind of shops you go into and ask for an Ultimate Brazil.

Really careful.

yeah -- my stomach turns whenever people mention vitor as a good boxer. he's a good MMA striker, but a boxer he is not.

I forget sometimes that Vitor and Wanderlei are basically the same age and started around the same time. Wand just seems so much older than Vitor now.

Vitor is intolerable on almost every level.

Now is as good a time as any, right, Rex? It would be weird for either of those guys (Sylvia and Rizzo) to come back into the UFC, but mostly Sylvia. Having a former champ come back in after years against a revitalized division where they, at one time, were the top guys might not be good for them. It's a different ball game now. Timmy won't be able to use his size anymore against the new breed of heavyweight strikers and grapplers. No Arlovski to box around this time. Not even sure what could be a compelling fight for him. A "you broke my arm" rematch against Mir? Feed him to Carwin or Lesnar? Or a tall guy fight with the winner (maybe loser) of McCorkle and Struve. Not sure at all about Rizzo.

I'll probably get shit on for admitting this, but....

I've never seen Ultimate Brazil in its entirety. Seemed like video stores ignored it back then because it didn't have a number, and the bootlegs i bought at the Hajiimart didn't have Ulitmate Brazil or Ultimate Japan included. I really should have hit up Amazon by now, huh?

Even though Wandy's chin is shop-worn. I would hold out hope that after Anderson puts a beating on Vitor, if they stage a rematch, that the lack of wrestling shoes and 'suppliments' would make it a different fight. Would love to see Wanderlei use the proven antidote to Vitor but I dont think he has the wrestling or inclination to give him the top control special.
