Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Roger Huerta as Smart as He Is Pretty

(“Do it, Roger! Choke that old bag out!”)

MMAWeekly posted an article today summarizing Roger Huerta‘s recent appearance on MMAWeekly Radio, in which El Matador declared that he’d be taking up to eight months off from fighting in order to rest, finish his degree in business management, and develop his takedown defense. Said Huerta:

“I’m not fighting for 6, 7, 8 months. I did everything I could this year, I tried to keep helping promote the sport, keep making it grow, but I think I didn’t get a lot of R&R. I trained through Thanksgiving for this fight, I didn’t even go home to Texas to spend time with my family…You know the truth is I need to finish school too. I fought 5 times this year and I think that’s the most anybody’s ever done in the UFC and I think I’m going to take some time off.”

Translation: “There’s no way I’m going to fight again — and potentially lose my shot at the UFC lightweight belt — until after Sean Sherk fights the winner of Penn/Stevenson, when I’ll obviously be the next in line to challenge for the title. What am I, a schmuck on wheels?”

Since the dude went 5-0 in 2007 and just proved that his pristine record is no joke, Huerta deserves a break as much as he deserves a chance to win the lightweight championship. So big ups to Roger for playing it smart and not immediately setting up a meaningless fight. On that note, here’s how I’d rank the UFC’s lightweight division, in terms of ability:

1) BJ Penn
2) Roger Huerta
3) Sean Sherk (w/o ‘roids)
4) Mac Danzig
5) Joe Stevenson

If you see things differently, by all means, post your own list in the comments section. I just can’t wait to hear you try to explain why Frankie Edgar and Ken-Flo are, like, the sickest fighters ever.

BJ Penn at 170 is a bad man serving beatings to the top of the ranks in that division, at 155 very dangerous. Watch his fights I would tell any MMA newb heavy hands and just awesome dexterity with crazy flexibility. Among the best in any weight class and one of my favorite fighters.

Roger “El Matador” Huerta man never ever in a boring fight cranks up that volume when he needs to like a mad man, always very busy kicking, throwing and solid wrestler best thing the kids got a chin he can take some bombs and dish right back.

Ken Flo mad ground skills not afraid to throw and deadly elbows. The guy makes his own crazy chokes up??? I’D BE HAPPY TO SEE A MIX OF ANY OF THOSE THREE GUYS IN THE RING FOR SURE

That’s le crème of le crème for me in that class, I’m very excited that UFC brought it back and for the new talent like Nate Diaz and Danzig both hard workers and strong backgrounds. Pay close attention to both of them. The weight class is stacked man with mad talent not to leave out Guida and Thomas or Tyson, but those are just my favs, I would kill for a BJ VS. HUERTA wouldn’t you?????

Sherk is a roid using freak (I have no respect for that crap in any sport) BJ would destroy him he’s lost to both GSP and Hughes BJ with a win over Hughes and gave GSP the worst beating he’s ever experienced. And couldn’t and wont ever be able to finish Ken Flo much less HUERTA
And who ever put Melvin Guillard up there to “be different” or cute is a jackasss, he’s a bum and will never be anything else within MMA.

5.Guido for 5th <-- its funnier spelled like that "shut up you know thats what you think when you her his name".

6.Edgar and Tavares

If you follow Big Chris's logic than everyone is retarded for not having Edgar on the list since he beat Griffen.

"just to be different or just to show how retarded you are…"

Jeremy- December 13, 2007 at 10:29 pm
I knew i was gonna catch some flack about that. but like i said, just wanted to be different
BIG CHRIS- December 13, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Joe stevenson just beat melvin Guillard in their last fight and you have Guillard up there instead of Stevenson....just to be different or just to show how retarded you are...
Jeremy- December 13, 2007 at 9:40 pm
1. BJ Penn
2. Roger Huerta
3. Joe Lauzon
4 Tyson Griffon
5. Melvin Guillard (Just to be different)
BIG CHRIS- December 13, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Oh and it said your top five picks.....not six dude.....
BIG CHRIS- December 13, 2007 at 9:09 pm
I think BJ Penn is a good lightweight champion.....with him holding the belt I think the lightweight division is right on track....
tipsyrockero- December 13, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Come on give roger some respect. 5 fights in one year and won them all.
1. BJ Penn
2. Sean Sherk
3. Tyson Griffin
4. Joe Stevenson
5. Kenny Florian
6. Roger Huerta
I dont like the hold up on the light weight devision. Huerta proved him self with one good fighter but I think one more named fighter will put him on the list as the next in line for the title. As for Sherk he f*-*up with the whole roids thing. I like his coment about getting tested b4 a fight, i also think he should get tested after the fight as well. Joe silva lets get the lightweight back on track.
BIG CHRIS- December 13, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Mac Danzig is a good fighter.....he was the lightweight champion in King of the Cage, he was undefeated for the whole year of '05 with every win coming by knockout or submission, and he has been fighting professionally for 7 years....he has paid his dues and he earned that contract...but he still isn't a top five lightweight in the UFC....there are too many dangerous fighters in that weight division....Joe Silva's job there is easy....there are many good matchups all he has to do is pick em'....
knightrida- December 13, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Wow, I can't believe Mac Danzig gets so much love for a few rear naked chokes. lol. I don't disagree that he's a great fighter. He should be up for a big fight to prove himself as Huerta just did.
BIG CHRIS- December 13, 2007 at 8:07 pm
I don't think he would destroy kenny florian, in fact you put a guy like Joe Lauzon in with Huerta and Huerta might lose....he had a hard time with Guida....that was his biggest test of the year, and he did pass it....but I don't think that makes him number 2....and yeah Micah, Griffin belongs on that list, good call there.
CagePotato- December 13, 2007 at 7:22 pm
@ BIG CHRIS, Micah:

Huerta would *destroy* Kenny Florian. My God, what does the man have to do to get respect from you bastards?

As for Mac Danzig, he's been looking good for years, and I don't see him going down easy against guys like Florian or Diaz (who have never knocked off any superstars themselves). Griffin's a good call, though...
Micah- December 13, 2007 at 6:50 pm
1. BJ Penn
2. Sean Sherk
3. Joe Stevenson
4. Tyson Griffin
5. Kenny Florian

agreed with the guy above me, Mac Danzig has experience only in the fact that he loses to big named guys.
BIG CHRIS- December 13, 2007 at 6:23 pm
My top five are a little different.....

1. BJ Penn
2. Sean Sherk
3. Kenny Florian
4. Nate Diaz
5. Joe Stevenson

Roger Huerta is next then maybe Mac Danzig....Just because Mac Danzig fought his way though the inexperienced scrubs on TUF does not put him in the top five....neither one are top five material....-
