Rolles Gracie: One and Done

(“Don’t worry about it, Rolles. Listen, why don’t you stick around Vegas for a while and learn the casino trade?” Photo courtesy of Sherdog.)

Following his ugly loss to Joey “The Mexecutioner” Beltran last Saturday at UFC 109, Rolles Gracie has reportedly been cut from the UFC, joining Mark Coleman, Phillipe Nover, Tim Hague, and Frank Trigg in the list of fighters who didn’t make it out of that show with their jobs intact.

It’s not a common occurrence for a new UFC fighter to immediately get cut if they lose their debut, but Rolles wasn’t just any prospect — his last name gave him a lot to live up to. Whether the pressure came from Dana White or the fighter’s humiliated uncle, there may have been concern about Rolles tarnishing the Gracies’ UFC legacy with any more godawful performances. As a 3-1 fighter, his story is by no means over. But he’ll need a little more seasoning before he makes a return to the bright lights and high pressure of MMA’s biggest stage.

Maybe he should take on Bob Sapp in some upstart Asian MMA promotion.

He'll be back. Give the guy a treadmill and some wins in the minors and he'll be back. Come to think of it, what are the odds Strikeforce signs him? The casual fan (i.e. Strikeforce's CBS audience) knows nothing of this fight, and they can market that a Gracie is in the cage.

Another guy screwed over by Zuffa. Renzo should drop out of his fight with Hughes no matter how much these liars are paying him.

@Robocop Didnt Tap
It's pronounced Hodger.

How about the crazy, unthinkable possibility that just because he shares a name with some good fighters doesn't guarantee he'll be one? Michael Jordan's cousins aren't all in the NBA.

Or maybe it's because he's brazilian that we're usually forced to believe he's half god.

What an unfortunate circumstance. Here's hopin he puts together some good wins and gets back to the UFC.

Now I understand why Roger Gracie never fights.

We're very disappointed in you, Rolles. What would your grandfather say? You were a legitimate heavyweight Gracie--do you realize how interesting you could have made the UFC heavyweight division? You better hit the gym son, and hard. I want you to be back in two years with a fire under your ass and at least five more wins--preferably at least one by some sort of brand new innovated sub.

Until then, Kim Couture has you pegged--Rolles "Dis" Gracie.
