September 1st Targeted for Jones vs. Henderson UFC Title Bout

Dan Henderson Michael Bisping UFC 100
(Remember when this happened? Yeah, that was kind of awesome.)

We’ve known for some time now that Dan Henderson will get the next chance to dethrone young phenom 205 pound UFC champ Jon Jones, and now we have an idea of when that will happen. “On Thursday afternoon, UFC president Dana White said that the organization was targeting an early September date for the UFC light-heavyweight champion’s next title defense, likely on Labor Day weekend,” MMA Fighting’s Mike Chiappetta reports.

“The UFC currently has no September 1 show on its official schedule, but if and when it gets added, future Hall of Famer Dan Henderson is on deck in the challenger’s role.”

Details and bad-ass highlight videos after the jump.

Jones fought four times in 2011 and last month successfully defended his light heavyweight title against former training partner Rashad Evans. Henderson last fought and won a razor-thin decision over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua last November in arguably the best fight in MMA history.

Who do you think takes this one, nation? Check out the highlight videos below and let us know!

Dan hendo has absolutely 0 chance to win this fight. after its over ppl will say hendo was too slow to land the h bomb and couldn't close the distance on jones. Hmm. Neither could evans, who shoulda tried to take jones down more. jones can easily wipe the floor with any LHW, especially these aging guys. times change, iceman and hughes are gone, and now its time for evans rampage and all the old pride guys to retire as well. someone give gustavson a bionic arm and let him have a go.

Hendo is the last man to win Jones in LHW. He is very clever and unconventional fighter (see Fedor's fight). He wan't let Jones for hitting his killing elbows. Every Jones cick will be ocasion for Hendo to shorten the distance and punch Jones's chin. If Hendo doesn't finish Jones till 2nd round problem with cardio may appear. The longer the better for Jones. I believe in Dan he deserves to be the champion. JBJ has much time.

you guys realize what it would meen for henderson to win this bout? a rematch with Rua which would be potentially the best fight ever, or straight to middleweight to fight Anderson Silva for the chance to hold both freaking titles. please god PLEASE let Hendo win.

I'm rooting for Hendo on this one, but the MMA math just doesn't add up in his favor. Still, all he really needs is one good hit...

Note to everyone editing highlight videos: Walk-ups and introductions are NOT highlights.

Every time I see that brutal footage, I wonder how Bisping is NOT competing in the Paralympics now . . . or worse yet, the Special Olympics

Hendo won't get close enough for a takedown, and if he does get close enough, he's just going to eat the same standing elbows that Rashad did.

It's hard to pick anyone over Jones right now, fo sho, Robpd22. Do you think that a patient Hendo, that was focused on getting the takedown, could win it though?
Robpd22- May 7, 2012 at 12:53 pm
I still really don't know, I got burnt on Jones wrestling ability before. I picked Ryan Bader to out wrestle him <I used to wrestle btw>. I think its really the only way to attack JJ at this point. I would like to see how he handles himself on his back for extended periods of time at least.
Robpd22- May 7, 2012 at 12:45 pm
Well I love Dan but I really didn't want to see this fight. John Jones looked patient last fight and Dan's right hand isn't exactly a secret. I think JJ will avoid the big right and beat Dan everywhere else.
