Shields vs. Ellenberger Slated for September’s ‘Battle on the Bayou’, UFC Conveniently Forgets ‘Five-Round Non-Title Main Event’ Rule

From this day forward, any [main event] that is signed after right now today will be a five-round fight.” — Dana White, 6/9/11

The main event for UFC Fight Night in New Orleans on September 17 has been verbally agreed to as Jake Shields takes on Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger…”Ellenberger is on a mission to get his first shot at a world title, and Shields is determined to get another crack at it,” said UFC President Dana White. The televised bout is scheduled for three rounds. —, 6/29/11

And so, the UFC’s new five-round non-title fight rule is immediately ignored. Considering that Shields’s recent bouts haven’t all been barn-burners, you have to wonder if the UFC’s decision to make this a three-rounder was some calculated hedging against a boring match. After all, nothing kills a good party like 25 minutes of stalling.

“UFC Fight Night: Battle on the Bayou” (aka UFC Fight Night 25) goes down 9/17 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I'm pretty sure Louisiana has a law that another man couldn't lay on top of another man for more than 3 consecutive five minute periods with a one minute rest for both men in between. It's just not the kind of forward thinking place you want to test a new policy.
joshuan29- June 29, 2011 at 9:51 am
Pat Barry would be a good rebound fight for Roy Nelson. Fight would be a damn exciting.
joshuan29- June 29, 2011 at 9:42 am
I think the all the hate for Shields is retarded. The least exciting fight I've ever seen him in was the GSP fight, and IMO that's more to do with GSP's "Paper Asshole" style of fighting than Shields. Shields with his iron chin and great submission game will finish this fight via armbar. Ellenberger is a step way down. Shields should be fighting either Penn or Fitch.

having jake shieldz on any card is a sure way to get less viewers watching...ide rather watch paint dry
Fatty McDickbutts- June 29, 2011 at 8:53 am

OH, and Joe Rogan is totally behind me on this shit too. I don't understand all these haters on J-Shields.. he totally beat GSP fair and square; if it wasn't for seedy Canadian MMA judges he'd be champ right now forsure.

Fuck Jake Shields, I hope he goes to Bellator where I'll never have to see him again.
Fatty McDickbutts- June 29, 2011 at 8:48 am
JAKE SHIELDS???? Omg, wtf... this fight is going to be so fucking awesome. Shields is such a talented fighter... so fun to watch.. My only regret is that he isn't fighting Jon Fitch instead: NOW THERE'S A FIGHT I WANNA FUCKIN' SEE. Jesus, talk about an epic fight - that'd be one.

For gods sake, Dana is saving us from 10 bonus minutes of jake sheildzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. We should all send him 1\6 th of our hourly rate.
fACE7biter- June 29, 2011 at 8:01 am
Shields/Ellenberger won't be the main event most likely, thats why its not five rounds. ME has gotta be Pat Barry Vs. Stefan Struve, five rounds of size differential awkwardness. And since they seem to always come as a package deal, expect Mitrione on thsi card, possibly against Kongo or Herman.

dana white will say anything. but he will only do what makes the most money for him
knucklesamitch- June 29, 2011 at 7:45 am
Oh yeah...except that Evans/Davis main event. Oh well, theory b) out the window, I stand by theory a).
knucklesamitch- June 29, 2011 at 7:43 am
I believe that a) DW is doing us a favor by making this a 3 round fight b)Not having this be a 5 round non-title fight means they don't even have to worry about the new policy until at least December.
Danky4twanky- June 29, 2011 at 7:29 am
Scratch my prior statement about it being co main. MMAjunkie is also reporting this fight as the headliner
Danky4twanky- June 29, 2011 at 7:25 am
That or Dana is doing us a favor. I mean seriously, who wants to see shieldzzzz fight anyone for more than three rounds. Not me sir, not me.
Danky4twanky- June 29, 2011 at 7:23 am
Ya I agree, I haven't read anywhere but cp that this fight was gonna be the main event. I bet it turns out to be a co main and not the big one.
Get Off Me- June 29, 2011 at 7:17 am
No fights have been officially announced as of yet, maybe Shields vs. Ellenberger will co-main the card with another fight that may be a five round non title main event.
bgoldstein- June 29, 2011 at 7:11 am
@ newdeal : Makes sense, but DW said that the 5-round rule would also apply to Spike and Versus cards.
newdeal- June 29, 2011 at 7:06 am
More likely due to time constraints on television which dont exist on pay per view
