Shine Fights Would Have Canceled Mayorga vs. Thomas Even Without Don King’s Meddling

(Nick Thompson, Rick Hawn, and a bunch of angry fans react to the last-minute cancellation of "Worlds Collide." But hey, they came all that way, so they might as well hit up the concession stands. Props: RealTimeMMA)

After Shine Fights’ "Worlds Collide" event fell apart this weekend, we all assumed it was a direct result of the injunction that wretched, slimy, reptilian motherfucker Don King filed in order to block the participation of headliner Ricardo Mayorga, who King had under a previous fight contract. But it turns out that the cancellation actually had to little to do with King’s interference with the main event, and the general mismanagement of the promotion has led Shine Fights matchmaker Ron Foster to resign. MMA Weekly has the gory details:

"There were concerns about fighter safety and well being, that’s why the fight was canceled," said [North Carolina Boxing Authority Superintendent Terrence] Merriweather on Monday. "What we’re talking about specifically is failing to have a doctor at the event, at the time for the fighters to be seen before the fights had started."

Pike and Merriweather confirmed that in North Carolina it’s the responsibility of the promotion to provide the doctor, and one was not on scene for the fights on Saturday. A financial problem arose as well, as the members of the Boxing Authority explained…

"North Carolina rules and (regulations) require the promoter to have all purse amounts to the boxing authority two hours before the first match-up, and those requirements were not met," said Merriweather.

The full purse means funds to cover all the contracted bout agreements had to be paid to the commission prior to the event to guarantee fighter pay, and according to the members of the Boxing Authority, Shine Fights never followed through with that commitment.

Speaking with anonymously on Monday, a source close to the event said that the situation at and around the show on Saturday was chaotic at best…According to sources at the event, fans were already in the building and seated when the commission decided to cancel the show, and that refunds would be issued this week.

The fighters who were booked for the show will receive either full or partial payment, depending on the obligations established in their contracts. As for Ron Foster, he sent out an e-mail on Monday saying "because of the actions that took place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday I no longer feel that Shine Fights is the place for me."

Man, first we’re apologizing to Josh Koscheck, and now Don King doesn’t deserve as much blame as we thought he did? What a bizarre week…

Never, ever apologize to Rosscheck. Not even if you slam his dick in a car door. He's the heir apparent to the position of King of the D-bags. He'll take over if Tito dies, is disqualified or otherwise cannot meet the obligations required of the title.

I have a horrible feeling we just got an idea of how the Impact shows "Downunder!" are gonna end up. They think they're gonna do 3 events in 15 days and sell PPV's? I detect a hint of inexperienced promoter here, or shark who doesn't give a fuck as long as he can scam some bucks

@ Mr_Penatrophy

@ Macaronislacks

I concur. I'll bet his dumb ass was chartering private flights on a Gulfstream IV with scantily clad cocktail waitresses back and forth from Texas to Florida all: "Hokay, shu wanna play? We'll play. Say ello to my leetle friend!" and shit.

So, D1ck4, they set up the whole goddamned stadium/ring, got concessions on-line and had everybody show up but all the while they were planning not to have the event and to sabotage it they chose to not meet the Doctor requirement or pay the purse?

So basically, they spent a fuckload of money to make no money?

I have a different idea than that.

The dumbasses overextended themselves, didn't have the resources to get a doc there and didn't have the $$$ left to make fighter payrolls.

I'm not saying THAT'S not somehow Don King's fault. How the fuck would I know? It just makes a lot more sense to me than plan A.
D1ck4- May 18, 2010 at 2:34 pm
What do you mean this isn't Don King's fault? If you were in charge of shine fights, and you knew that your main event had been cancelled, why would you pay to have a Dr. on site, and pay fight purses in advance for fights you know aren't going to happen?

I guarantee if Don King didn't come along there would have been a Dr there, and that money would have been paid.

But macready.......Shine fights were good enough...and doggonit....people liked them. Or would have liked them if they would have had the show.

Somebody at Shine read The Secret a few too many times. This kind of unadulterated optimism can kill and is responsible for some of the worst fiascos of all time.

I know I can. I know I can. I know I can.

Oh, shit, I can't.

And they don't find out that they can't until they've got everybody whipped into a lather, the machine is in motion and everything is on the line.

Reality, not a hundred affirmations in the mirror, people.

Absolutely pathetic

Add daeyeth to that milk carton. Haven't heard from him since he predicted Aoki was gonna school Melendez because "he's not on Shinya's level and you kids are about to find out."

I'd probably go into hiding, too, if I said that. So nevermind then. Scratch him from M.I.A. and add him to LMFAO(Leave me the f'k alone Ommmkay)
Viva Hate- May 18, 2010 at 12:53 pm
According to Bob Arum, Don King was totally in the right. King was merely trying to save someone he represented in the past from getting mixed up with the wrong crowd. Bob Arum sent me that in the face book group.

The following CP posters have not been heard of for some time:

parchy mcthirst

If anyone has seen or heard form these individuals please treat them like a lost puppy and help them find their way back home.

This was well done on Shine's part. This will rank up there with Elite XC: Kimbo vs. Petruzelli and Affliction:Trilogy. They should teach this shit in a business operations class in colleges nationally.

Nice fiasco!

ummm, nice try but blaming this shit solely on don king is totally disingenuous .

It's amazing that they even let all those people in if these obligations weren't met. Dumb........
