Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Shitstorm Subsides: Jon Fitch is Back in the UFC

(Guess who’s back?)

Well that didn’t take long. Jon Fitch is once again a UFC fighter, and will still fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 94, as planned. Apparently all it took was a conversation with Lorenzo Fertitta. MMA Rated has the scoop:

“Communication kind of broke down with Dana (White) so we talked with Lorenzo,” Fitch told MMARated. “(I) just got off the phone with him and we came to an agreement. We’re going to move ahead and I’ll be back in the UFC. We’re going to sign off on the video game and I’m back. It was never even about the agreement or the contract. It was the approach that we felt Dana was being a little bit hot-headed and was threatening us right off the bat. It didn’t seem like a professional way of doing things.”

Cooler heads, as they say, have prevailed. Should the ease with which this was resolved once Fitch and his management team were able to speak with someone who wasn’t Dana White perhaps tell us something? Threatening, bullying, saying things in the media such as “[Expletive] them. All of them, every last [expletive] one of them,” maybe that’s the kind of thing that doesn’t help negotiations with one’s employees, who one claims to want to be “partners” with. Thankfully Lorenzo Fertitta is on board to smooth things over.

Now you have to wonder, what lesson will Dana White take from this? Fitch did sign the contract. The UFC got what they wanted. Will White now be convinced that he can get what he wants if he plays good cop, bad cop with Lorenzo? Or will he see that sometimes talking things over is preferable to flying off the handle? Let’s hope it’s the latter. Right now Lorenzo is looking like Michael Corleone and Dana is looking like Sonny. And we all remember what happened to Sonny.

I left running the casinos to join UFC operations full time. Right now I'm learning the ropes of the game and I'm picking Dana's brain so I can do what I've wanted to do for years now, and thats to give that white Don King weasel ass mother fucker the biggest fucking boot inthe ass that he deserves GODDAMMIT!!! I'm tired of him making a mockery of my co. and the sport.

Sure, he owns a piece of the pie, but whats he gonna do when I ban him from all events and UFC associations? He cant go anywhere and do anything cause he has pissed so many people off and burnt so many bridges, he's goning to have to live in a bunker with his fag ass gimp!

Stonie- November 20, 2008 at 7:19 pm
It seems Dana and the UFC again get what they want and Fitch looks like a 'Little Bitch" and a fool. Yesterday the contract was unfair and today he signs it and says it was just about respect. What a tool.

Dana White is more a part or face of the UFC than any fighter on the roster. You lose him, you got trouble. He's got the swagger that appeals to the fight mentality in general. When you're hyping a fight, do you want a guy saying "These two fucking guys are animals. They're going to try and kill each other..." or maybe a nicer more polite softer-spoken guy who says "This should be a fun matchup and we're excited to see everyone in Las Vegas". Promoters need to have big mouths. They're doing their job. Good or bad, name one other guy out there making his product known as much or more than Dana. It'd be like replacing Simon Cowell on American Idol. I don't watch the show, but I know millions of people know it or watch it for him more than the kids. He's gotten away with saying anything he wants and has done nothing but bring the show it's ratings in the process.

Dana should stay... just let him know where the line is.

Dana White has let his power get to his head. He thinks he alone is the UFC where as we all know he is disposable. The Fertitta brothers are smart businessmen and I think it is about time they have a sit-down with this moron. The only negative thing the UFC has at this point is Dana White.

WHOA! Way too much going on here to read. I lost interest at Imbecile's long ass post. You would think he likes to sooth Dana's velvet pouch the way he always goes to bat for him.

Jon Fitch: "It was the approach that we felt Dana was being a little bit hot-headed and was threatening us right off the bat. It didn’t seem like a professional way of doing things.”

And this is different from how Dana White acts in every other aspect of his professional and personal life how, exactly? I would imagine he's hot-headed, threatening, and completely unprofessional when orders a cup of coffee.

[DW walks up to the counter at coffee shop across the street from the UFC offices]
DW: Hey, how you doing? Yeah...uh, gimme a fuckin' cup of that latte shit.

Barista: Sir, I'll be happy to get you your coffee, but I don't appreciate being spoken to that way.

DW: You don't "appreciate" the way I talk to you??? You'd better fuckin' appreciate the fact that I've even come into your pathetic little fuckin' coffee shop here and am willing to pay you for your pisswater fuckin' piece of shit coffee.

Barista: Sir, that's just uncalled for.

DW: Oh yeah? Your little coffee shop wouldn't be shit if it weren't for me and the Fertittas making all the sacrifices that we have in building the UFC. All our people come over to this fuckin' place all the time and buy your shit. You wouldn't even have a fuckin' job if it weren't for the UFC. Fuck you. Fine. Why don't you just quit and get a job at the coffee shop next to those fuckin' t-shirt guys, if you don't like this?

Barista: I think I'm going to go get my manager.

DW: Your manager?? Fuck him. I'm not talking to your idiot management team. Those fuckin' guys are all a bunch of idiots and assholes. What are they gonna do...try to "negotiate" like professional business people? Fuck them. Morons. This isn't a fuckin' negotiation. You got two choices right now--get me my fuckin' latte or get the fuck out. You got five seconds to give me an answer or Zuffa and I will just buy this little fuckin' place and fire your ass immediately. You can fuckin' bet on that.
Frank- November 20, 2008 at 12:26 pm
The Fertitta brothers need to send White to anger management and negotiation skills training. Seriously. I'm not joking here. My company has sent executives to these classes all the time.

This whole story sends a bad message for Dana.... it says that if you don't like him or what he says, you can just go over his head and get your way!

theflyingtsunami Says:

"i cannot wait for the day that another promotion is able to truly challenge the ufc so that when they pull their strongarm tactics on the fighters, they can actually say “f*ck u dana” and go elsewhere and really have a place to earn a living. "

Ehh...regardless of what someone thinks of Dana, it's never good business to burn bridges. If you think it's a good monetary move, then do what you have to do and if down the road it works out you want to come back - or worse... HAVE to come back - you don't want the last thing you said being "F you, Dana/a.k.a. guy with the deepest pockets in the world for your sport."

Fitch is good, but as good as he is, he's still not to the point where he'd get Couture treatment. And like it or not, the best fighters are not always the most marketable. Look at A. Silva... his ppv numbers are half of what others draw, despite being the "PFP best". The idea is to make alot of money. And if you're smart, you're hanging around with your hand out in the only organization going worldwide. I'll bet there's a list of EXC fighters who'd love to be grumbling about their UFC contract right now instead of co-headlining the big card inside the hexagon at the farmshow.

I don't agree with every single thing that Dana does, either, but if you wanna play on the world's biggest stage, there are concessions. Donald Trump doesn't let his secretaries tell him how to build hotels and he's renown for being a colossal prick. And yet the line of people trying to get on his payroll is miles long.

At the VERY least, these fighters should capitalize on their time in the UFC to build name recognition and take whatever value that brings with them if they feel they have to leave. Fitch would've done o-k-a-y, but he just lost to the UFC champion, so he'da basically been stepping backwards. He would have had a great run at being a good #2 for a while. Then he'd go somewhere else and maybe capture a belt that wouldn't mean as much because he beat someone less than GSP for it. At least the former champs are raping Affliction. Tim Sylvia - $800K ? What!?!?

somehow reading this story reminds me of mel gibson in braveheart screaming, "FREEDOM!!" It may sound cliche, but i still believe in having rights whether or not i choose to exercise them or not, or whether or not they may ever materialize. if someone wants to take away those rights, and then threatens my livelihood if i don't give them away according to the "FAVORS" that i need to comply with, then that seems a bit unethical to me. and before everyone says, "they're a private co./ don't work for them, etc. etc....i agree w/ that, but only to a point. saying something like that is only valid if you have another company or organization to go to. otherwise, if you only have pretty much ONE choice, then that option sort of becomes moot and meaningless.

can i choose then to not be a fighter - sure. but how logical or practical is that? especially in terms of the age, training, money and lifelong dedication spent towards being a pro fighter. which is why i say that...........

i cannot wait for the day that another promotion is able to truly challenge the ufc so that when they pull their strongarm tactics on the fighters, they can actually say "f*ck u dana" and go elsewhere and really have a place to earn a living. for all the bad crap spoken about the other organizations, it seems they at least didn't squeeze the lifeblood out of their fighters just so they could earn every red cent from them. to go back to something very relevant that luke thomas of bloody elbow posted in one of the many fitchgate stories: he asked several ?'s re: why the contract needed to be exclusive, why is it absolutely nonnegotiable, why cut fitch completely instead of just out of the game & is this more personal w/ zinkin than w/ fitch himself? the truth is, there really are no answers to these questions that can justify the lifetime issue and the nonpayment to the fighter, including upon his death. & it does not matter to me that currently no org. pays their fighters for dvd's or the like; they should & hopefully will in the future if the fighters get a union or something similar in terms of banding together.

again, it goes back to freedom and rights. the ufc is categorically trying to take them away, and b/c they are the only real game in town, they can pretty much force the fighter's hand if they want to eat & continue to live. you can argue all u want that they (the ufc) have the right to do this, and while that may be true, it does not necessarily make it right or fair or ethical.

i hope ea sports makes a video game and asks fitch to be in it and then let the ufc sue and have their contract declared illegal. that would be the sweetest revenge. i know fitch had to capitulate b/c of monetary reasons b/c there just aren't too many places to go at this juncture. fitch may never have another video offer, but the fact that he could & now cannot exercise that right is the main crux of the problem for me. the pt. is giving up a right that you have as a person and as an employee of a company and giving up that right due to pressure of not being able to thrive b/c there isn't enough competition. at some pt. what may seem like a small silly video game can lead to larger issues and rights that slowly are devalued by strongarm tactics.

so much for freedom of autonomy. as fitch said, swick has a "special" deal for a video game so he's not affected the same way as fitch is; and who knows how many other fighters are exempt from the ufc's special brand of "offers they can't refuse."

maybe it's time for a ufc - vegas tea party......w/ the aka boys leading the way. :-)

Dana should be given one million dollars to enter the cage with none other than Kimbo Slice. Just so everyone can see him get reduced to the low scum, trash talking, pen pushing, absolutist, lap dog that he is.
Anonymous- November 20, 2008 at 1:27 am
He shouldnt have to sign that stupid contract anyway. I wish there was competition for the UFC that way when Zuffa pulls this stupid crap the fighters have somewhere to go, or even a fighters union. All videogame rights is too much especially when you consider these guys are going to be left with nothing unless they put up a school later on. Everyone vote for Fitch's next fight to be against Dana!!!
Anonymous- November 20, 2008 at 1:22 am
That was me. Thanks for the nomination. I'd love a shirt! -Darren XXL please.

By the way, Lorenzo best be rollin' in a Benzo.

Oh, and the Steelers are gonna win.
shitwhistle- November 20, 2008 at 12:25 am
Damn you, Ben. As I read that, I thought "classic case of good cop, bad cop". Then you state the same thing. Congrats. You have the same thought process as this precocious twelve year old.
But I wonder, is this really a case of Fitch getting scolded by his hot headed teacher and then smoothing things over with the cooler, more understanding principal with the hot wife.... and you're pretty sure they smoke wee.... but I digress.
My point is, Dana probably won't like how this all played out. Can you imagine the tension the next time these two see each other?
Good times, good times......
