Sickening Arm-Snap Video of the Day: John Gettle vs. William Kowalski

Before you click play on this Raw Vegas video, you should be warned that it features an arm being snapped like a pretzel stick in a fashion so nauseating you are very likely to throw up on your computer. Not trying to freak you out or anything. We just want you to be aware of what’s about to happen, so you don’t ruin a couple thousand dollars worth of electronics equipment and then try to blame it on us. Do we understand each other? Good, now go ahead and play it.

See, what did we tell you? What you’re seeing there is John Gettle, who is a student of Frank Mir’s, doing something terrible to a young man by the name of William Kowalski at a Tuff-N-Uff event in Las Vegas on Friday night. Somebody must have been filling Kowalski’s head with that ‘Jesus didn’t tap’ malarkey, because he held on in that kimura like he was waiting for his heavenly father to jump in and lend a hand. You can see for yourself how well that worked out.

Maybe it’s the sound of his arm cracking like a dry twig, or maybe it’s the way the limb snaps back like a rubber band that’s been stretched too far, but this is high in the running for the grossest arm break in MMA history.

Here is his quote from the Las Vegas Sun after the fight:
“I heard the clapper, (the noise that signifies the last 10 seconds of a round) and as soon as I heard it, I thought his arm has to come home with me,” Gettle said. “I have to rip it off or I’m going to fight in the third round. I really don’t like fighting out of the first round, so this third round was just out of the question.

I saw it many times, I'd have to see a lot more to the story and obviously hear the his comments before and after. I am suspicious he did it on purpose, but I don't know for sure.

That being said, I don't think it's too far fetched to think that this kid is a student of Frank Mir and he may have purposely over extended a submission before giving someone a chance to tap. Mir did it to Sylvia (Although that one was kind of fun to watch) and he is also one of the biggest shit talkers in the sport. I was actually quoting "Tap, Snap, or Nap" from Frank Mir directly, he has said it during his commenting days on more than one occasion.

Did you watch the video? Do you really think the guy knew his forearm was going to snap? This wasn't a joint that gave out it was a freakin bone it just snapped. It wasn't a conscious decision. I don't get your comment on "tap, snap, or nap" either. All that phrase represents is the 3 options when caught in a submission. It's not meant to condone snapping or napping over tapping. You are reading way too much into some of this stuff.

In Japan, this is not a reason to stop the fight. See how it's supposed to be done:

I think we're going to start seeing a lot more injuries like this. We've gone from mixed martial arts to just cage fighting again. Too many meatheads with no discipline or respect.

It's that bullshit affliction "tap, snap, or nap" attitude. It figures this would come from a student of Frank Mir. He and Brock Lesnar are just turning this sport into the WWE.

video was not sickening at all, fuckin babies...Canada rules at Hockey, Double Gold Baby!!!!!!!!!

Wrye Bash- March 1, 2010 at 5:00 am
Video wasn't 'sickening' by any measure I'm familiar with.

I always say to the ref, "let'em fight, ref." Early stoppage for sure. It's likely he even had two good legs to go with his good arm. That still leaves him with 50% more game than Kimbo Slice.
Mescan_Judo- February 28, 2010 at 7:18 pm
After reviewing the tape. It looks like in early stoppage to me.

The guy still had one good arm to defend himself. Just stating the obvious.

I have collection of fucked up pictures at work, they're taped to a file cabinet that can only be seen when sitting at my desk. Corey Hill's rubber leg is one of them. I see that every day so maybe I'm desensitized. I also have some good punch faces and FAIL posters.

I had one of the marathon runner who shit down his leg and was still running, but I took that one down when I accidentally sharted one day. Too close to home after that.

(edit) This is the nasty too (injury, not shart):

Man, I waited a full day before checking this one out - what a snap. Damn - that'll be stuck in my head for awhile... just like PurplePickles "I accidentally sharted at work" comment. lolol

Priceless my man... absolutely priceless.
Mescan_Judo- February 28, 2010 at 5:19 pm
When I saw the headline I was like "Aww-man what is this shit - click."

What a mistake that was. I should of read your warning first before clicking.

That shit was awful. Awful I tell you. I fucking cringed in my seat when I saw that.

Next time I'll make sure I read before clicking!

Hope the guy heals up ok.

Nice...if the US has to lose to someone, I'd want it to be Canada...especially in a sport like hockey. I think you are right about the joint injury vs. a broken bone. As long as it's not a compound fracture, I bet a broken bone heals faster and more thoroughly than a damaged joint.

I agree. When you get a knee, elbow or shoulder in a bad spot, you can feel that something is not right, and those joints naturally have some give to them. I doubt you can 'feel' when bone is about to give...I imagine it stores the energy until it hits the breaking point, then...Bam!
Joedirt- February 28, 2010 at 4:36 pm
Oh and I'd like to add.... GOLD GOLD GOLD!!!!! SWEET HOCKEY GAME! CANADA RULES!!!!!
Joedirt- February 28, 2010 at 4:32 pm
rlh61... I'm with you... I was thinking the same thing. I doubt he had time to tap. I think when you have something like that locked in you should kinda give the guy a chance to tap before you.. uh.. hyper extend his elbow ripping the joint apart. Not exactly a black eye. Truthfully if a bone in the arm broke it would heal faster than all those tendons etc.
PurplePickle- February 28, 2010 at 4:11 pm
I know you can feel a joint giving way when it is attacked, but I wonder if at any point you can say 'my fucking bone is about to go, I better tap'?
rlh61- February 28, 2010 at 3:36 pm
Yeah, when he started applying pressure to that arm, it looked like he was going for 'broke' so to speak. It snapped so quickly I'm not even sure he had time to tap. I've heard a few fighters talk like they want to hear a bone snap when they apply moves like an arm-bar. I've never quite understood're going for the submission, but I'm not sure why you'd want to break it. On the other hand, if the guy isn't going to tap...
Yves Latrine- February 28, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Just wanted to second the point that it's an Americana and not a kimura.
ArmFarmer- February 28, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Guys, it's really not that bad. His forearm quickly snaps but it doesn't bend in half or anything you can barely even see it happen. It's just the noise that's a little unsettling, so if you have a squeemish stomach just mute it. Or grow a pair and just click play.. I don't get how fans of mma get all pussified because of a broken arm.
k-onda- February 28, 2010 at 1:37 pm
That was definitely a pretty good one, I would've liked a little splatter, a bone sticking out or something, strange how rubbery it was and he did it really fast. So as arm breaks go that's right up there. But all in all, that Corey Hill leg break takes the cake, not that anyone could eat cake after seeing it. I think my favorite part was when he tried to step on it right afterward.
ghostboner- February 28, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Yeah the Corey hill leg break scarred me for life. It didn't help that I also had to watch Cantwell bend that Hassan dude's arm the wrong way on the same night. In this one it didn't look like there was any question in the dudes mind, he knew he was going to snap that arm.
Kittarl- February 28, 2010 at 1:31 pm
me no speak enlish, you woe me 2 grand
Clyde- February 28, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Some people just don't want to admit that they are not the second coming. Tap, dude. Tap.
