Sleeper Card Alert: Armageddon Fighting Championships 3: Evolution on Saturday Night

(Armageddon is fitting name for the promotion, since Kalib Starnes fighting for a title likely signals that the world is coming to an end.)

If you’re jonesing for some MMA to watch this weekend since July is pretty dry for events, and you don’t want to shell out the $29.95 for the Austrailian Impact FC "Island of Misfit Toys" pay-per-view, for the price of a small pizza you can watch a pretty decent card from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on Saturday night.

Armageddon 3 will feature a middleweight title bout between Nick Hinchliffe and UFC 100-yard dash record holder Kalib Starnes (who, incidentally, gave me the excuse linked here after the day after the bout with Quarry, and later, when he was criticized for his comments, tried to excuse the excuse by wrongfully blasting me on the Sherdog forums for printing comments he says he made "off the record" even though he didn’t bother to mention that they were).

All joking aside, besides his bizarre UFC 83 non-fight with Nate Quarry, Starnes has always put on decent fights and Hinchliffe is no joke himself. Four of the former King of the Cage Canadian light heavyweight champion’s five losses were against PRIDE and UFC veterans including Victor Valimaki, Rory MacDonald and Travis Galbraith.

Also on the card is grappling phenom Robert Drysdale, who will be making his heavily-anticipated MMA debut against  8-2-1 Canadian Bas Huveneers, who is riding a six-fight winning streak into the bout.

BC-based Brazilian-transplant, Marcus Vinicios — the brother of the fighter in the infamous crazy capoeira knockout video — who takes on Ryan James, could very well be the standout fighter of the night.

Another highly regarded grappler who is somewhat new to the MMA game and will be fighting on the card is Canadian Misha Cirkunov, who will be looking to rebound from his recent loss to Cesar Gracie fighter Roy Boughton. Cirkunov won the Canadian ADCC trials a few years back and held his own in an exhibition grappling match with Renato "Babalu" Sobral barely out of high school.

Here’s a preview of the show:

@ghostboner. Different Marcus Hicks. You're thinking of "The Wrecking Ball." This one (The Loudmouth Assassin) has become a punching bag of sorts for Canadian up-and-comers.

"Island of Misfit Toys"...who says CP writers aren't humorous? That's pretty f'n funny right there...

HAHAHAHAHAHA I love how they say 5x UFC vet beside his name. It should read Worlds most trained pussy.

Drysdale is competing in mma now? Well fuck me. Also got Marcus hicks on the card, who is renowned for having a giant melon of a head. And also for being an entertaining fighter. 8.99 you say? I'm sold.

I was at AFC2 and will be at AFC3. To the guy above mentioning "The Gingerbread Man": Kalib's walkout song last time was "The Muffin Man", so you might be on to something.

Hinchliffe I think scored the KO of the night at AFC2 so let's see if he can repeat.

Definitely worth $9. The lower card guys will be really green but it kinda makes for a fun fight sometimes. Think Garcia vs Jung sloppy. That's always fun. I think there was a single decision last time (if even memory is foggy atm), so 15 fights goes pretty rapidly with no time wasting between fights for commercials and stuff.

Canadian equivalent of Kansas HAS to be somewhere in Saskatchewan.

The correct comparison should read Saskatchewan "IS" the Canadian Equivalent of Kansas. Not much Corn, but lots of boring scenery, and backward people.

Keri Scarr (0-2-0) vs. Wendy Roy (0-1-0)
Keri was a lackluster Pro Muay Thai Fighter : W 0 - L 3 - D 0 who seemed more concerned with a airbrushed model portfolio than her fighting talents as her record will attest to. Didn't know she was fighting MMA but again her record shows little improvement. I think she desperately wants a Belt so she can pose with it in another photo shoot obscuring her shirtless breasts.

Kalib Starns?....I am embarrassed by this fellow Canuck, hope he doesn't turn into the Gingerbread Man,........ Run run as fast as you can,...can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread man!....I hope Nick Hinchliffe got his roadwork in.

So is this Keri Scarr chick an actual fighter or just an excuse to get a girl on the poster? I see she is 0-2, thought you might have seen one of those.

I'm in Kansas. Off the record: If you come here I'll fight you.

I think I'm going to buy this just because it is in Victoria and I misspent a few weeks of my youth being drunk in the bars there.

This doesn't mean I forgive you Kalib.

I attended the first two AFC events and am only missing this one because I'm on the other side of the conutry on vacation.

AFC is a tremendous show and will be more than worth the paltry PPV sum if you're around Saturday night. There are some young fighters from local gyms who are really starting to show promise.

Oh and MR, that does seem like a bitch move. Bitch move indeed. My past comment has nothing to do with his character, which seems shady to say the least.
PurplePickle- July 14, 2010 at 7:12 pm
At least your pissing off the right guys. Imagine either of the Cyborgs taking enough umbrage with your reporting as to threaten you. Then it's time to change your name to Russ Michael and start a new life in Kansas, or the Canadian equivalent of Kansas.
DazedNConfused- July 14, 2010 at 7:11 pm
I live near (well near enough) to BC and around western Canada he's known as a pretty good fighter. He may or may not of been injured during the Quarry fight, but he still puts on good fights up in BC and is generally an exciting fighter to watch.

If I had the cash and didn't have to work my soul away this weekend (and drink my liver away the following nights) I wouldn't mind checking them out. Some of these rooks could be in the UFC someday.
Mike Russell- July 14, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Besides Gus, he's the only guy I've ever interviewed who wanted to fight me...because I refuted his claim of the convo being off the record and I informed him I have the entire tape of the interview. The nerve of me.
RearNakedPoke- July 14, 2010 at 6:13 pm
im sorry but if i was Kalib i couldnt show my face again...
