St-Pierre vs. Diaz Expected to Top 800,000 Pay-Per-View Buys, Making It UFC’s Second-Best Showing in Two Years

Predictable or not, UFC fans are still happy to open their wallets for the privilege of watching Georges St. Pierre thoroughly dominate his opponents for 25 minutes. According to a new report by Dave Meltzer, UFC 158 is expected to be one of the greatest pay-per-view showings of GSP’s career, with over 800,000 buys estimated. That figure would make UFC 158 the most-bought UFC event since last July’s UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II card (925,000 buys), and could put it slightly higher than 2011′s most-popular show — UFC 129 (“around 800,000 buys“), which was also headlined by Georges St. Pierre.

You can give some credit for Nick Diaz for hyping the fight in his own unique way, but St. Pierre remains the UFC’s most reliable PPV draw in the post-Lesnar era. Getting GSP to fight as often as possible would help turn the UFC’s downward-trending PPV momentum in a positive direction. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that will happen. According to St. Pierre’s trainer Firas Zahabi, GSP suffered an achilles injury before the fight, and will take some time off to rehab it; Zahabi said he didn’t want his star pupil to return to action for at least six months, though St. Pierre could return before then.

“He wants to take a couple of months off because his two fights were very close to each other and he wants to enjoy the summer,” Zahabi told TVA Sports. “We haven’t talked to the UFC yet, so we don’t know what their plans are for Georges yet.”

Get comfortable, Johny. You’re about to have some free time on your hands.

It is every title contender's job to figure out how to beat the champ. I still hold out hope that somebody is going to be the Rua to GSP's Machida and solve that puzzle. In the mean time, I dont mind watching GSP's technical, athletic and tactical brilliance bring the game up. These dominant champions serve one of the greatest purposes in the sport ... They force contenders to be as absolutely sharp as they can be. The king is dead. Long live the king.

Well put armfarmer
Thumblaster- March 22, 2013 at 10:54 am
I thought condit should have won the decision against hendricks and am still pissed that he "lost" that fight
ArmFarmer- March 22, 2013 at 10:44 am
I don't need to defend my opinion when my opinion is that I just don't give a shit about watching gsp fight anymore. I don't care if hes top 3 pfp, I don't care that he fights smart or fights to win, I just don't want to watch his 25 minute snorefests anymore. It's taken years of it to get me to this point, but I just don't fucking care anymore. He's fighting a mentally defeated one eyed koscheck thats got 0 offense and he cant even bother to throw a power punch.. He fights shitty ass jake shields in a kickboxing match and doesnt do shit.. He brings his "darkside" to diaz and doesnt do a damn thing differently.. Even his godamn interviews are boring as shit. I just dont want to watch his half assed fights anymore and if that bothers you then fuck you, how bout that?
Nippletwist- March 22, 2013 at 10:03 am
Lol fightmetrics is meaningless garbage they don't measure strikes correctly at all look at gaps face after the fight he got housed standing as usual. Any good striker beats g sp standing his standup isn't that food and he has a weak chin.
mma4ever- March 22, 2013 at 8:52 am
Well put cman.
cman- March 22, 2013 at 8:05 am
As much as I agree just a takedown is given WAY to much weight in scoring, and should only be scored if used further (advance position, g n p, sub attempt).
And I don't get why defensive BJJ isn't scored and bottom offense is all but ignored.
I fail to see how you apply to GSP. He is one of the most active top fighters. I also add in he's not fighting cans, and everyone who fights him spends a ton of training on TD defense and bottom defense. Yet he still dominates. And people want can crusher elbows being dropped from the ceiling, ignoring that he is fighting what's supposed to be the cream that rose.
Further I don't get how those same GSP haters, refuse to see that the criteria you criticize him for winning with, is the same Hendricks won with. Except minus takedowns he was outclassed by condit. Even in top control, Condit was winning every other aspect of that fight. And your ok with Hendricks getting that decision? GSP dominated Diaz even on the feet. Look at fight metrics for standing, who saw that coming?
Thumblaster- March 22, 2013 at 6:08 am
I just think judges give to much credit for takedowns and positional control they should score more for sub attempts and effective strikeing off the back. Mabye it's st pierre's accent or the way he seems so concernd about tiny little cuts when he's in his corner, it could also be his unpleasent nuthuggers.
mma4ever- March 22, 2013 at 4:21 am
U dont get to choose your own diss....just dont like when people shit on gsp for winning and dominating pretty much everybody he faces why ain't the challengers threatening him with anything but a head kick from condit and seras lucky punch?
Thumblaster- March 22, 2013 at 3:30 am
Hey , i'm not pro-koschek, i'm just sayin if you can dominate another fighter as clearly as gsp owned koschek you would think you would at least throw some kind of strike that could possibly end the fight. If your going to say I write some dumb shit you should probably come up with something better than "bumblaster"
mma4ever- March 21, 2013 at 9:06 pm
Thats some dumb ass shit bumblaster...u should not be fighting if its a jab that makes u lose.
Thumblaster- March 21, 2013 at 7:38 pm
Gsp should have been fired after that koschek fight what kind of a champion is content to throw a jab and nothing else for 25 minutes. Dana went off on anderson silva after his pathetic "fight" against maia , he should have gone after gsp for that bullshit fight , if you never attempt to finish a fight and just go for position you should be hit with a yellow card and lose a percentage of your purse. I mean could'nt gsp even pretend to go for a submission or at least get enough seperation when in the guard to land strikes thaf stand a chance of ending a fight . Gsp's last two fights you could make tha argument he sustained more damage
mma4ever- March 21, 2013 at 6:33 pm
Hey nipple what u gonna cry about after ol gil gets his ass handed to him thanks to benny and george burning ceaser circus shit hole to the ground...Huhhuhhuh.
Nippletwist- March 21, 2013 at 5:04 pm
Yeah Nicks always a big draw, he's probably the most exciting fighter in MMA. it's too bad GSP is so boring and made the fight lame.

look in that pic tho how nasty nicks defense is. Nicks like impossible to hurt on the ground. GSP has some of the best Ground n pound and he couldnt even get a hand on nick. pretty brilliant watching nicks defense on his back in that fight, i don't think anyones better than him at defending themselves off their back.

definitely hilarious how busted up GSP was after the fight with the black eyes and ice pack on his head. and then nick strolls in all chill with no marks on his face, like still talking shit. classic. i really hope nick doesnt retire, i fucking love watching his fights, the jiu jitsu and boxing is so brilliant, he's really one of the best fighters i've seen anywhere.
HandsofGold- March 21, 2013 at 5:02 pm
For all you baby back bitches crying about GSP wrestling, first off go fuck yourselves, second if the opponent can't stop someone from taking them down at will maybe he doesn't deserve to be fighting for a title. Its obvious what GSP is going to do so stop it. Oh wait you can't because he mixes it up so well you don't know when he is going to strike or shoot a double. MMA bitches. Now go back to your momma's basement and eat your cheetoes. ;)
Mr_Misanthropy- March 21, 2013 at 4:23 pm
800,000 buys? Fuck yeah, that'll buy like two tons of weed!
cman- March 21, 2013 at 3:10 pm
Sure did, and I'm not so biased to forget the fight.
GSP td, 2 out of 3
Sheilds 0 out of 6
GSP didn't even attempt one until the 3rd round. I'm not saying it was an exciting fight, probably the most boring of the 4, but it was not a wrestlefuck, nor lay and pray fight. Go back and watch it.... possibly for the first time if you think it was different.
BaghdadBob- March 21, 2013 at 2:44 pm
@cman. Wow, GSP boxed Shields for 5 rounds. Did you read your post before submitting it?
cman- March 21, 2013 at 2:35 pm
Lemme see, last 4 fights;
Koscheck, pretty sure he jab caved in half his face.
Sheilds, Boxed him for 5 rounds.
Condit, he did strike with him, but is more a counter striker so volume is lower but accuracy was way higher. Did wrestle him, except this is MMA... its supposed to go to the ground also.
Diaz, he outclassed him standing and on the ground. advanced position, struck, controlled.
I honestly do not get the whine. Outside the fan boys screaming for blood, it was far from a fitch/shields lay and pray fight that so many try to convert it into.
Are you the same fuck heads that scream 'sweep the leg Johnny' 75x a fight at BWW's?
Nippletwist- March 21, 2013 at 5:09 pm
outclassed him standing? you mean got busted up bad by only a few punches and then when back to his takedowns. nicks boxing is wayyy out of georges league, GSP wanted nothing to do with standup in that fight. and he couldn't advance position against nick either, he couldn't even hit him. controlled him? yeah, that's what gsp does, control. give him that, but nick neutralized the ground and pound with his jiu-jitsu, and was the better striker, and actually did more damage.
Thumblaster- March 21, 2013 at 12:32 pm
I'm with you armfarmer back in the day when matt hughs was a wrestle fuck champ and st. pierre was going for his belt st. pierre seemed exciting to watch with his striking, now adays st. pierre is just content to get a takedown and just hold his opponent there, now I watch hopeing st. pierre gets ktfo. Unfortunatly johnny hendricks looked an awfull lot like st. pierre in the last 2 rounds against condit.
The12ozCurls- March 21, 2013 at 10:53 am
My point exactly. Amen.
cman- March 21, 2013 at 9:48 am
They would hire a wrestling coach but budget won't allow and Ceasar doesn't do that shit.
cman- March 21, 2013 at 9:47 am
Oh the IRS will get theirs after Ceasar pays off the camp expenses, nicks manager, coach, BJJ coach (cuz that's DIFFERENT), PR manager, boxing coach, guy hired to teach him how to buy houses and shit, travel manager, and laundry for the towels has to get for himself.
Lets see at 15% each that's comes to.....
Ok Dana, just make that check to Caesar , that's with a C, Gracie......
ArmFarmer- March 21, 2013 at 9:43 am
At this point I just want gsp to retire. Im a wrestler, im a wrestling in mma apologist, and even I have no interest in watching him fight anymore.. The only reason i watch these days is in the hopes that he loses. Hopefully hendricks can pull it off.
The12ozCurls- March 21, 2013 at 9:01 am
I don't know all the ins & outs of it, but I assume Diaz gets a percentage of PPV buys for being in the main event. Let's see if his "management" actually pays his taxes with that presumably large check he will be getting or if the Cesar Gracie Academy gets a new juice bar in the gym or let's see if Cesar Gracie gets a new Mercedes. More likely than not - the IRS is going to make Nick tap out because his debt will still go unpaid.
