I dunno…. I have read thru alot of the hype of the Penn vs GSP matchup! And let’s face it there is no favorite. I have followed this sport since it’s onset and it blows me away to watch what these guy’s put their bodies thru!! I have to say I am partial to B.J. The man has the best legs in the sport, the dextarity is unbelievable!! He won the first fight …yes it was close, but GSP’s 3 takedowns in the third did NOT win that fight..I’m not sorry it just DID NOT WIN THE FIGHT! He should win this one too…Penn submission in the 2nd Round.

BJ Penn may be the lightweight champ (and rightly so), but he is also an arrogant prick. What kind of egomaniac thinks that by winning a belt in one weight class he deserves a shot at the championship in another weight class IMMEDIATELY?!

I’m not denying that it would be a great fight, but that’s not the only thing that matters. Your comment about the WWE hit the nail on the head. Brock Lesner’s situation has started a bad precedent for the UFC. MMA is supposed to be about real competition and earning your way to the top. BJ has done that in the lightweight division. He has NOT done that in the welterweight division. But I guess he figures ‘Hey, they gave me a welterweight title shot before……’

Compare him with Anderson Silva. The man has DOMINATED the middleweight division. More so than BJ has done in ANY fight in ANY weight class. Do you see him demanding a light-heavyweight title shot? No. He fought a well-ranked (but not top-ranked) James Irvin….and destroyed him in order to prove he could bang at light-heavyweight.

I dont think it is too fair to the other fighters in the welter weight division, that bj penn, the man who was defeated by matt hughes, and george st.pierre, gets to surpass other fighters such as finch , thiago( who dominated hughes) and koscheck, not to mention any other fighter in that division, and gets a title shot! ? what is the deal behind that? we cant forget why bj left welter weight. he could not win the title there.. so please shed some light on this current situation..

when an unfortunate accident likes this happens, it puts the other

SO lets brainstorm guys, GSP thumbed in the eye & continues to fight with no referee time out, perhaps HE COULDNT SEE 100% which resulted in an BJ getting in some shots in that otherwise he couldn’t get in.

Ok forget first fight questionable decision (that matt hughes also admitted scoring in favor of GSP), lets just look at the three factors in a fighter
1. athletic skill,
2. fighting skill (natural and trained) and
3. mental strategy

1. Athletic Hands down goes to down to GSP, lets not argue.
Fighting skills……ok i’d say BJ, but many would argue and I would fairly listen.
2. fighting skill, BJ has that natural talent.
In terms of who has trained hard to become a stronger fighter… that goes to GSP. GSP trains to be the better athlete and by doing so he endures longer. If you look at BJ, he comes out BLITZKRIEG style, Because he knows if he doesn’t get them fast he doesn’t stand the better chance of lasting past the second round. Look at BJ’s history in fights , w/Joe Stevenson he came out BlitzKrieg won it early on, Ok now opposite With Sean Sherk he lasted but BJ definetely did not show athletic ability, HE showed good use of jabs to keep Sean away (athletic NOT, Fighting ability YES) & it’s obvious that HE Was the more winded than Sean. And take a look at the ENDing of that fight KNEE, BELL, Referee stoppage, Sean asking what happened, BJing saying the fight is over…???? maybe am wrong about the order, BUT I TELL YOU WHAT, I can’t help but think BJ would have been too tired to continue in the next coming round and sean would have turned it around. Points made???
3. Game plan, Mental Strategy.
Ok BJ, seems to BLitzKrieg for almost every fight, except for Sean seemed well planned, Keep him at bay and Jab him till KO.

Ok guys, the reality of it is that it will be a very exciting fight! All the fanboi’s one way or the other need totrealize that this fight makes ALOT of sense, and is deserved by both fighters.

Bj Never “lost” the WW Belt. It was given up at BJ’s choice to want to fight in a different leauge (Pride). One of his main reasons is because the Light Weight Division was gone in the UFC and BJ knows that is the best weight for his size. However the fact that BJ WAS Dominant at 170

BJ’s carrer in the UFC started by dominating (except a iffy split decision to Pulver) the 155 lb. class with wins over Caol Uno and Din Thomas Joey Gilbert and Paul Creighton . Then he stepped up and beat Matt Serra
at 170!

When he got a title shot against Matt H everyone thought he didn’t have a chance….except me and a few who knew the deal (I made 750$ profit on that one!!!).

Since he returned to his most natural weight he has beaten Pulver, Stevenson, and Sherk. He is the deserved Champion at 155.

Due to btoh guys dominance (GSP is a stud as well) this fight is the best for the fans since they are both capable of fighting at this weight. Silva cant cut past 185 (in good health) and I dont think GSP would step up in weight as he walks around at 185-188…Silva would destroy him.

So we should all quit whining about “eye pokes” and pizza and beer because NEITHER one of these guys will take fights lightly.

when bj left the welter weight division it wasn’t because he just left it was because he wanted to fight in another company’s event and dana white stipped the title from him.so for who ever was saying bj never beat anyone worth while in the ww division is a laugh cause he man handled a top title holder in HUGHS who was also the same guy to tap out gsp.bj penns skills were unbeleivable and he fought only using his skill not training like he should have and he was a dominant fighter till he lost to gsp hughs and little evil and realized that he needed to train harder which seems to be working for him.now gsp has a much improved fighting style w/ his take downs and take down defense but he has to be able to control a much and i mean the much better ground technician of bj who has monkey legs. and for those of you who say gsp will have the power advantage over penn are smoking something and i want some cause when penn faught machida at 205 he held his own with machida who has more power then gsp and is probably a lil more technical the gsp on the ground.

first on the gsp v. fitch fight , that will be a good fight but im goin for gsp simply becuz i think gsp has more talent at this point and he is an extremely tough opponent. it takes him just getting caught on the button to rock him. ( serra v. gsp) he may have messed up and he got caught but it didnt knock him out it rocked him. gsp is one guy who doesnt let that happen again at least nearly as easy. although fitch is also a pretty tough guy non the less in the end i see a decision going to for gsp. now bj v. gsp. is going to be great. like i said gsp is someone who works hard to fix his mistakes. so i dont see penn putting him in the same amount of trouble as last time. but i dont want to take anything away from penn because he now works harder than he did before to meet his potential. and he does. so i still dont have a win on either side yet i will have to make that choice later.

@ ME and Big Chris – I recognize Penn’s past success in the welter, but he was on a serious skid when he left for the lights. Penn gets props for Sherk. I didn’t think he had it in him, but there’s still Florian and Huerta left to fight before he can call the light weight class a victory. And that’s assuming Manny Gamburian has decided to slip into obscurity. (I love that guy)

If you don’t understand the concept of people being on “another level” then you fail to see people in all walks of life as anything but ordinary. That is to say that you cannot see the differences in people and the various qualities that we all have. Not everybody is the same. We are not equally good at whatever we do. Some people are smarter than others, some are better athletes.

It could be said, for example, that Nikola Tesla was on a whole other level when it came to understanding physics. There is still not a mind on earth nor may there ever be that was able to comprehend the world as he. Another would be my writing skill compared to, say, Ernest Hemingway. I suxors, he did not.

Same with athletes. There is in everyone a limited potential for any given topic. Some people can run faster than you and I. Some can fight better. It may be very difficult to reach that potential, but that’s what training is for.

Final example(s), BJ has limited physical “levels” and though he has proved that if he trains hard he can reach them, they are still lower than others. But his mental game and comprehension of MMA has put him on a higher tier than most fighters, hence his success. Sherk is, however, a juggernaut of a man. Physically (roids or not) BJ’s body isn’t anywhere near the heights that Sherk’s can reach. But he lacks the understanding of all aspects of combat that BJ does not.

Does anyone remember the GSP vs Penn fight? I mean, everyone here is saying BJ kicked his ass in the first round, sure, he did out strike St. Pierre, AFTER GSP got a thumb in the eye.
Then everyone talks about how BJ gassed in the later rounds, while GSP was fighting with a broken nose and could barely breathe.
Watch that fight without the biased commentary of that douche bag Joe Rogan, and you’ll have a different opinion.
The entire time Rogan was saying how great BJ is, how no one can take him down, then 2 seconds later, GSP clinches and muscles Penn to the floor. Then Rogan talks about how BJ has such great subs and will get right back up, GSP holds him on the ground and avoids pretty much all submission attempts.

Believe me, even if a conditioned BJ Penn comes to the Octagon, a focused GSP will destroy him.

Actually BJ has been fighting welter for a good portion of his career and was champion at one time. So to say he hasn’t beaten anybody is, well, silly. He can join the weight class at any time with the opportunity to fight for the title because he left the title vacant, it wasn’t taken from him.

I honestly believe that BJ will beat GSP. Not to take anything away from GSP but BJ had him beat the first time.. he just gassed and therefore beat himself. This won’t happen this again.

GSP has been known for his stand up and BJ was punching his face in. GSP’s Ground game is pretty good but BJ is on a whole other level. Size and strength will be a factor but not by much.

I think that the biggest factor will be the mental game. BJ Penn likes to make himself hate all of his opponents. Many people say that he is a master of making himself want to kill anyone that he steps in the ring with. This keeps him from getting distracted and having the same problem that GSP had against Matt Serra. I honestly believe that this is the reason why BJ is so emotional after his fights. Once the fight is over he realizes that he does not actually have anything against his opponent after he kicks the crap out of them.

BJ Penn has already proved he can’t beat anyone significant at Welter, so what makes him think he can come back? Two successes in the kiddie pool? I would be more impressed by a Pierre-Silva fight. Also, why would Penn get a crack at a title shot without any wins in the class? Why isn’t Silva getting that same opportunity?

@Mike-Penn was not at the top of his game then….GSP has come a long way but so has BJ….but Bj was gassed by the second round on their first fight, that won’t happen When they fight again.

@AC-I think BJ has it in him to be able to control both weight classes at once…Those other lightweights will get their chance, but right now it is BJ’s time to build his legacy, and this is one of the major components needed to build that legacy…but if he can get two belts in two different wt. classes he will have a lot of work ahead of him to protect those belts that’s for sure.

I think it all depends on which of each fighter we see. If we see old Penn full of beer and pizza, then yea, not so good for him. On the same token if we see the lazy distracted GSP that shows up every once in awhile then same thing for him. But we’ve seen each of these guys take it VERY seriously lately and if that trend continues, then it will be a hell of a main event.

I still wish Silva would have dropped down a class or made a catch weight to fight GSP. Despite the difference in height I think GSP can put on a good show and decide who really is # for # the best. Guess that will never happen now though…. maybe the “Spider” was dodging him? (hehe)

@AC- yeah that makes sense except for the fact that his win against sherk was so dominant….Sherk dominated Kenny Florian and a juiced up Franca, he looked so dominant in those fights and it seemed like he would rule that wt. class for a long time….well we all know what happened, but Once Sean was cleared to fight BJ, that was BJ’s biggest test in that wt. class and he completly out classed him….So after sherk there is no real legitimate challenger in that div. so a move is not really premature in my opinion.

. . . so Fitch beating GSP would be considered an upset? It’s not like Fitch is a small welterweight. Before people even begin discussing GSP vs. Penn II, they have to remember that GSP has to face Fitch for 5 rounds. Steamrolling or buzzsawing through Fitch is really not likely. A victory via unanimous decision or split decision sounds possible, but even after that its not like GSP has fought any other up-coming welterweight like Thiago Alves, Sanchez or even Swick.

I’m sure at this point, Fitch, Penn, and who ever else is expecting GSP to rush for a quick takedown.

Problem was that BJ gassed BAD going into round 2.
If BJ can keep his current drive going…. you know actually training.
He should be able to beat GSP.

I love GSP, and I think he’s got a strong shot to win the fight. But where I get worried is that his tactics will have to change from what he’s been using lately. Wrestling and gnp against one of the best MMA jiu jitsu players out there, who also has a great sprawl and can counter punch with the best of them, is a risky proposition. GSP will have to use his length and speed to hit Penn from a distance until he’s worn down; I think GSP CAN do that, but WILL he?

I think that Gsp would go through Penn like a hot knife would go through butter…. He is constantly improving his skills and I just like him.
