21 Humans Who Make Being Human Look Really, Really Hard

Step Aside, Condit: Diaz Blasts His Way Back Into Title Fight Against GSP

Check out “Dapper” Roy Nelson in the three piece!  (Video: Youtube/UFC)

“He’s the most disrespectful human being I’ve ever met, and I’m going to put the worst beating you’ve ever seen on him in the UFC.”

With those uncharacteristically aggressive words, Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre verbally accepted the bout against Nick Diaz in a backstage conversation with Dana White.

And just like that, Carlos Condit’s “guaranteed” title shot went up in smoke faster than a fatty in the 209. All of the events surrounding GSP’s next challenge have been bizarre, but that’s what happens anytime you’re dealing with the “Pride of Stockton”. Just last weekend, MMA’s least credible source, Chael Sonnen, predicted that Condit would get bumped back in line should Diaz get past Penn, and he was right on the money.

Only Diaz didn’t just get past Penn, he dominated the former lightweight and welterweight champion, abusing him in the stand up en route to a unanimous decision. Sure, his post fight speech–“I don’t think Georges is hurt. I think he’s scared…I think he’s scarred to fight everybody right now. What’s up? Where you at, George?”–wasn’t as eloquent as Chael’s “loser leaves town” proposition to Anderson Silva, but it earned him a shot at the title on Super Bowl weekend nonetheless.

Now we’ve got a fight that everyone—champ, challenger, and fans—is clamoring for. The hype and speculation surrounding the pre-fight press conferences alone will eclipse that of some title fights themselves. If Diaz took a swing at his friend BJ Penn at the weigh-ins, what do you think he’ll do to an opponent he openly disrespects? You may think Diaz is just the animal to unseat GSP from his throne, or you may think he poses no serious threat at all, but come February 5th you’re going to see St. Pierre in a very different title fight against a very different fighter, and in a division with dwindling credible challengers and somewhat repetitive performances by the champ, it’s a welcome bit of chaos.

Why else do you think Condit is going to be on the same card? He is the safety valve for when Diaz screws this up. Perfect "PLAN B" by Silva and Dana. They know the likelyhood of Diaz imploding.

@The Incredible Huck

I agree, Diaz will probably throw a punch at one of the pre-fight pressers and get his ass suspended. That is the most realistic ending to this scenario. Diaz is a paranoid bully who is insecure and dillusional. That being said, I think he will try and get out of the GSP fight. Easiest way to get outta the fight - throw a haymaker during a press conference leading up to it. Teddy Atlas predicted (albeit years ago) that Mike Tyson would try and get himself disqualified in the second Holyfield fight because of his mental state and insecurities. Next thing you know, he is chomping on Evander's ear. I see distinct similarities with the mind set of Tyson then and Diaz now. Both came from rough upbringing, neither is educated and both are in desparate need of medication because they are both bat shit crazy. We will get the GSP vs. Condit fight because Diaz will find some way to get himself out of this fight. Whether it is missing press conferences, failing drug tests or starting a riot at a presser (assuming he actually shows up). It is regretful too, because I think the GSP vs. Diaz fight would have been great. I am just not holding my breath that it is going to happen.

Give it a rest people...Dana made the first mistake by thinking he was going to show everyone "who's boss" by punishing Nick and taking away his title fight. Of course, Dana got more backlash for that than he would have imagined...and he's not a moron, so within hours he put Diaz back on the card.
The whole reason (other than the fact that he's a great fighter) Nick got his title chance against GSP was because that's the fight that the fans wanted to see! Condit is seriously an afterthought. A GSP/Condit fight is just not the money draw that a GSP/Diaz fight is going to be. Condit (or any upcoming welterweight for that matter) can command the amount of media attention that Diaz can...as reflected here. Nor would Condit have given GSP the challenge he needs. Everyone, including Dana, knew what the outcome of a GSP/Condit fight would have been...we've all seen it played out in his last four title defenses. And the general consensus is that we're all getting pretty sick of seeing the same old, same old. It was a given that Condit was going to take a back seat once Diaz beat Penn...Dana knows where the money is! He's not just a fight promoter...he's a businessman, first and foremost.
That being said...the point that Nick (very "UN-eloguently") is trying to get across when he talks about money, is that plenty of other people are making money off of his, and other fighter's names. The guy has an autism spectrum disorder for chrissake...he's not perfect...but Dana sure knows how to play it up. And you'd be a fool if you didn't realize that post-fight press conference wasn't shown live for a reason.
Finally...if I have to hear/read one more time people excusing BJ's performance away because he was too small...I'll go crazy!! The guy has been fighting in the welterweight division for years, has been a regular title contender, and champion. I know he's got a huge fan-base but please just accept the fact that he's not capable of training and competing at the current level.

What a tool, whines and cries about money issues after having just been awarded a $75k bonus check? Complete douche bag. Diaz is the biggest crybaby in mma. "I dont know how to buy a house..", just like you didnt know to attend the press conferences, or catch your flight on time. To be honest, I thought Nick's performance looked great simply because BJ sucked so much. He didnt offer any offense after gassing in the 1st (imagine Nick's camp got their 5 rounds! BJ would have died in the cage.) His stand up defense looked terrible as he was easily backed up and forced to cover up for Diaz to wail on. Also, the few takedowns he attempted were slow and half assed. I just dont understand BJ, the guys biggest flaw has always been his cardio- you would think he would have preparred against a guy who runs marathons in his down time... Recipe for the same old title defense for GSP - same as Dan Hardy or Kos- loud mouthed, disrespectful contender acting like a moron who is going to get taken down easily and pounded on for 5 rounds. I have doubts it will even get that far though - I'm betting on Diaz to throw a punch at a presser and get suspended by the athletic comission in charge. Carlos better stay in shape.

Fedor Penn- October 31, 2011 at 5:33 am
I'm sure Diaz is really scared of GSP's threat. He is gonna try and lay n pray as always cuz he knows Diaz will knock him the fuck out if he tries to fight like a man. War Diaz! End this boring pussies reign please. Also Condit vs. Diaz would be a good fight cuz they both actually fight and don't play the safelt out point game.

AndyInflammatory- October 31, 2011 at 3:33 am
it's all part of the great tapestry that is MMA and the UFC bro. The constant back-and-forth between the Diaz lovers and haters, the GSP lovers and haters, the neutrals, the realists, the delusionists - it's all being slowly condensed from a gas into a liquid and when it hits fight week it will explode from the pressure-release valve and then BOOM. Refrigeration. But instead of refrigeration it will be the white-hot heat of a billion delusion nuthuggers clinging to the turkey-skin bag of their favourite fighter with all the strength their typing fingers can muster.

Get over yourselves Diaz haters. He is one of the sport's personalities, always brings it in his fights and has respect for the sport of MMA.
You might not want to go for a beer with the guy, but respect that he is a true talent in the sport.
Keep getting sucked into the WWE style storylines Dana likes to milk. And when was the last truly exciting GSP fight, respect the guys athleticism, but really.

^ Yeah I tripped out when I heard Schiavello, I didn't know he did the pressers and damn there is a lot of us Aussies on here, it really says something about our humour.
AndyInflammatory- October 31, 2011 at 1:55 am
This is gonna be BIG money now. And hopefully GSP does put the beating of a lifetime on Diaz, if only to show the haters what he's capable of after all the criticism. Diaz should then get Koscheck so I finally don't feel bad about cheering for him.

And that was Michael "The Voice" Schiavello asking the second question.

Aussie pride.

@danomite
.
I like the full interview, thanks for the link.
.
Did you notice how felt he had to cover his own ass, over the allegation hints dropped by Diaz. Dana was forced to speak-up and he did so in a pre-emptive manor. That's the first sign of a good liar.

Then there was Diaz talk about GSP pussy-ing out with his lame injury excuse..as was suspected early on.
.
and Diaz hinting that Dana monkeys with the fights intentionally.
.
And the best was Diaz describing how boxers get paid 10's of millions of dollars compared to what the UFC pays.
.
Dana couldn't wait to end that interview...Classic!.
.
Go Diaz, Go. (GRIN)
XENOPHON- October 30, 2011 at 11:24 pm
@Jubbie
.
Your right on about BJ being a tad too small, yet I have to wonder about the "...Diaz hasn’t faced a “UFC-style” fighter yet, the one with cardio for days and dominant top control."
.
Diaz came from the UFC, and I think his triathlon competitions give him a little more clout that you might be willing to admit.
.
I think GSP did looked rattled at the immediate conclusion of the fight ... even before the scores where read...the immediate Diaz fury and comments gave GSP a deer in the headlights.

Roy looks seriously scared he might be getting stupider sitting next to Nick

i didn't know cage potato had lap dancers on here, what with all that grinding dana black just did right in front of everyone. you fuckin' go girl!

i've seen multiple comments on other sites by people that actually believe nick diaz when he says that georges is scared of him. pure retarded comedy!

i must say it will be a breath of fresh air to see georges actually challenged for once. i think diaz has some very different tools that georges might have difficulty with. that said, realistically i don't think there is a very good chance diaz wins this and if history has anything to teach us, it's that fucking with georges like this puts him in motivated overdrive and people end up paying for it badly.

AndyInflammatory FTW, Lets just look forward to a good fight guys because it is happening now like it or not. I am a huge Nick Diaz fan but that doesn't mean I have to shit on GSP, George is the champ for a reason and Nick will have his work cut out for him. I recently watched TUF 12 again and was impressed by how professional and respectful Georges is, all the shit Kos talked and GSP still wasn't biting. George is an amazing fighter who is costantly improving but I feel his killer instinct is lacking in his last few fights but aftre last night Nick may have really pissed him off. My questin is will Nick get under Georges skin and throw off his composure in the fight or will Georges be cool as usual and use Nicks taunts to silently motivate him? On to Nick, I an really happy he got another shot and after his win last night I think his confidence will be even greater. Nick brings unorthodox striking, great cardio, top level BJJ, that chin and his never stop approach. There are a lot of variables in this fight but I don't believe George will stand with Nick in the first few rounds and trade punches. I agree with peole on here who say George has better defensive boxing and an awesome jab, but Nick's style makes good strikers akward and they wind up getting frustrated. Sure BJ got the better of the first round last night because BJ is fearless and was moving forward through Nick's punches, George is not as reckless and probably won't choose the same style. Nick also has the reach on Georges and is great at keeping people at the end of his punches. George is the favourite in this fight and I believe he will use the same strategy as in the Hardy and BJ fights, soften them up on the ground and then try out the stand up game, but Nick will not gas so easily and will be threatening from gaurd. I strongly believe if GSP wants to keep this standing he will be bested and possibly stopped but I would expect it to be competitive. I can't wait for this one.
Ogre- October 30, 2011 at 9:08 pm
As much as i hate to say Nick comes off like an irresponsible child who has the audacity to blame all of his problems on everyone but himself, (well i don't really hate to say it, because it's pretty obvious) I hope people start to see how insanely talented he is as a fighter, top knotch. Georges won't be able to hide behind his jab against Nick as he has in recent performances.
newdeal- October 30, 2011 at 7:15 pm
The real nes should be with this headlining the card and a comain of either condit koschek or condit fitch likely in the works that means there is no way anderson and chael will be on this card as chael requested
