Strikeforce’s June 6 show is already shaping up to be as good or better than their debut on Showtime earlier this month. In addition to the Jake Shields vs. Robbie Lawler main event, they’ve gotten verbal agreements from Nick Diaz and Scott Smith to face each other in a 180-pound bout. Apparently the extra weight felt good on Diaz as he smashed Frank Shamrock’s face all to hell, which is a good thing since he’ll be taking on a guy in Smith who can definitely take a shot.
Is it a little bit of a quick turnaround for Smith, who was in a three-round brawl with Benji Radach and got the worst of it for almost all but the last minute or so? Yes it is, especially since the fight will be less than two months removed from the Radach fight. But Smith’s a tough bastard who needs the money, also known as exactly the kind of fighter you want on your roster if you’re Scott Coker.
Strikeforce is also rumored to be working on an Alistair Overeem/Brett Rogers heavyweight championship bout for the same event, but it’s still just a possibility at this point.
So let’s recap: the June 6 Showtime event has Shields/Lawler, Diaz/Smith, and maybe Overeem/Rogers. Throw in Gina Carano and “Cyborg” Santos in a special no weight-limit bout, and I’d say it’s officially the greatest Strikeforce card ever.
Update: the Strikeforce press release on the Diaz/Smith bout included this quote from Diaz:
“I think this is a great fight for me, but I really hate that (Smith) brings his kids to every one of his fights because now I’m going to be made out to be the bad guy or some sort of villain after I beat him up.”

why hasn't smith been called back by the ufc yet? i seem to remember him having been dropped before his TUF appearance cos of some bullshit call by a ref that caused him to stop momentarily, and the other fighter (can't remember who) took him down and finished him. He messed up a few times, but he's pretty damn tough and puts on one exciting fight after another. Anderson Silva is a beast but his last 2 fights have been so disappointing that I doubt they're bringing in the monies that Dana was expecting. By comparison Pete Sell is still in the ufc, well had a recent fight that involved some mighty strange referee decisions, he made a name for himself against Baroni, then lost to smith in spectacular style in the TUF Finale, then lost another 2 fights, beat Burkman's ass, then lost again... favouritism ball sucking gone mad, mad i tell you!
