Strikeforce’s June 6 show is already shaping up to be as good or better than their debut on Showtime earlier this month.  In addition to the Jake Shields vs. Robbie Lawler main event, they’ve gotten verbal agreements from Nick Diaz and Scott Smith to face each other in a 180-pound bout.  Apparently the extra weight felt good on Diaz as he smashed Frank Shamrock’s face all to hell, which is a good thing since he’ll be taking on a guy in Smith who can definitely take a shot.  

Is it a little bit of a quick turnaround for Smith, who was in a three-round brawl with Benji Radach and got the worst of it for almost all but the last minute or so?  Yes it is, especially since the fight will be less than two months removed from the Radach fight.  But Smith’s a tough bastard who needs the money, also known as exactly the kind of fighter you want on your roster if you’re Scott Coker.

Strikeforce is also rumored to be working on an Alistair Overeem/Brett Rogers heavyweight championship bout for the same event, but it’s still just a possibility at this point.  

So let’s recap: the June 6 Showtime event has Shields/Lawler, Diaz/Smith, and maybe Overeem/Rogers.  Throw in Gina Carano and “Cyborg” Santos in a special no weight-limit bout, and I’d say it’s officially the greatest Strikeforce card ever.

Update: the Strikeforce press release on the Diaz/Smith bout included this quote from Diaz:

“I think this is a great fight for me, but I really hate that (Smith) brings his kids to every one of his fights because now I’m going to be made out to be the bad guy or some sort of villain after I beat him up.”

Good point, Nick.  All that work you’ve done on your positive image campaign lately, ruined by Scott Smith’s kids.  The little fuckers.
