Strikeforce Results: Evangelista DQ’d For Illegal Knee

(Illegal knee to the shoulder?)

Last night’s Strikeforce Challengers event sought to answer the old question, what’s the most unsatisfying ending to a fight, aside from a draw?  The answer is a questionable disqualification, which is exactly what happened after Billy Evangelista landed what was ruled to be an illegal knee against Mike Aina last night, bringing a stop to the bout in the second round.  Said Evangelista:

“I feel bad at what happened, but I am definitely planning to protest,’’ Evangelista said. “Nothing I did was on purpose. I thought I had timed the knee perfectly and that he was on his feet when it was delivered.’’

If Evangelista really does protest (and he has a decent case, if you bother to take a look at where that knee landed) that will make Strikeforce two for two on Showtime events that result in formal protests with the California State Athletic Commission.  Full results from last night’s Strikeforce Challengers event are after the jump:

Mike Aina def. Billy Evangelista by DQ (Illegal Knee to Head) at 3:40, round 2
Sarah Kaufman def. Miesha Tate by Unanimous Decision
Lavar Johnson def. Carl Seumanutafa by KO at 0:18, round 1
Aaron Rosa def. Anthony Ruiz by TKO (Rear Naked Choke) at 4:29, round 1
Bao Quach def. Tito Jones by Unanimous Decision
Spencer Herns def. Chad Sutton by Majority Decision
Fabricio "Morango" Camoes def. Torrance Taylor by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 3:21, round 1
Thomas Diagne def. Kaleo Kwan by Unanimous Decision
Ben Holscher def. Cody Canterbury by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 2:47, round 1

As Ninjanate said, knees to the body are always legal. Everyone talking about this "near the head" stuff must not be well versed in the rules of MMA regarding knee strikes. There is no "near the head" clause people.

to give aina "credit" evangelista was playing with fire if he is throwing a knee anywhere near the head so.....

Hey Dana,
How was it an illegal knee? Knees to the body=always legal.

It was fitting that this comes fro someone in BJ's camp.

as much i hated the way the fight got stopped it was a Illegal Knee even if it did not hit him in the face, It was total BS but you need to follow the rules.........

The chick fight was nice, but Tate definitely needs to work that standup.

Aina taking a page right out of the BJ Penns "Quitting: For Idiots". How are you going to get hit like that and try to play up the damage. When they showed him the replay, I could swear HE said he wanted overturned, his conscience already ripping him to shreads. That knees caught him flush in the armpit and shoulder, no where near his chin to "knock it loose". He was perfectly defended, was just trying to play it up to get some rest, and screwed it up by acting poorly, so none knew wtf was happening with him. Although the crowd was all kindsa boo-ey for no reason last night, they got that one right when they showed teh replay. What a chump.

Even just seeing a BJ Penn fighter try some shit like that, makes me that much more excited to see a highly distracted, distraught, and demoralized BJ Penn get tooled by KenFlo.

Terrible calls on a consistant basis? Is Strikeforce using NBA refs for their fights?

The card was a bit lackluster; the Kaufman-Tate fight was the most engaging. Though it must be remembered that this was the "Challenger's Series" so the level of talent is going to be below what we might expect from a regular Strikeforce card. Particularly one that will be featured on network TV. It's akin to the ShoBox Next Generation bouts Showtime airs on the boxing side.

As an aside, knees are legal to a grounded opponent, just not to the head.

yeah he didnt hit him in his head.... but he shouldnt be throwing that knee anyways.... aina's knee was no where close to getting up.... but this whole card sucked... glad i didnt dish out the money to go watch it

The knee was definitely not illegal. I think he got his jaw rocked with a left hand just before that knee landed in his armpit.

The DQ was complete shit!!! This has to be overturned. It always amazes me when PROFESSIONAL fighters take advantage of situations like that, once it becomes apparent that the other fighter starts getting the best of them. Evangelista really started taking it to Aina in that second round, and Mike knew it. Once he saw he had a way out, that's when he started his acting career. He has to feel like an ass after watching it back. Not that he didn't already when he started acting like he was hurt, and he knew he wasn't.........besides from getting the shit kicked out of him since the beginning of that round.

this outcome was unbelievable to me. it still is. and what frustrates me even more is that the replay CLEARLY shows that he was not kneed in the head but everyone kept talking about it like it wasn't a big deal. if this decision is not overturned i may explode. aina should be taken out back and shot. did he think that no one would check out the replay?? he should be ashamed to show his face ever again. him and caleb starnes should have a fight to see who bitches out first. suck it aina
