Suddenly B.J. Penn’s Pool Jump Seems Less Impressive

(Props:, via

If you haven’t been paying attention to the internet lately, you might not be aware of the phenomenon known as the ‘pool jump.’  Basically a dude jumps out of three feet of water and on to the side of a pool in order to prove what a great athlete he is.  The whole thing started with Jarron Gilbert, who just got drafted by the Chicago Bears.  Not to be outdone, UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn pulled off the same jump and helped to show that MMA fighters are every bit the athletes that NFL players are.  Score one for us, right?

But then along comes Washington Redskins wide receiver Keith Eloi who raises the bar by jumping out of the pool backwards.  Damn the NFL and their constant one-upsmanship.  We can’t let this go unavenged, MMA fighters.  Quick, somebody get Georges St. Pierre on the phone.  Tell him we need him to backflip out of a pool and land with both feet in a half-full glass of water.  The very future of our sport depends on it.

"Im not impressed, blah, blah, blah, I'm the real badass here, being the leading expert here.........". You fuckin guys kill me.
IronClad- July 28, 2009 at 7:34 pm
word, i think its easier to launch going backward to. You dont have to pull your legs up as quickly, less stressful. Looks impressive but jumping out a pool front wards is harder.

What did fagot Hal_13 say to fagot goog?

Hal_13: "hey baby, wanna come over to myspace and twitter my yahoo till i google all over your face book?"

Here is one to try out:

Stick your leg straight out and grab it by the toes. Now, squat all the way down with the other leg and stand back up without tipping over and keeping the outward leg off the ground but completely parallel to it. Sounds easy, but most people can't do it.
rokabee- July 27, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Oh and by the way, this does have to sort of do with mma, because this video cuts off right before Eloi says "BJ, i'm not impressed with your performance."
rokabee- July 27, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Yea, i did this shit yesterday (not backwards), if your in decent shape and have a slight bit of athleticism you should be able to do this...

just make sure you get your feet all the way up on the edge tho, my first try i slipped off and scrapped the shit outta my shin, 2nd time was good. It's semi-hard but definitely do-able.

Everyone should try this, make sure to record it so we can get some epic fail videos goin up in here.

As for jumpin in the F-150, that shits legit.

Poo Flinger- July 27, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Jumping in an F-150 is impressive, but out of the pool is not. Water Polo players do this all the time. You actually get a decent amount of propulsion from the arm motion. Penn's technique for it is right on. But overall I'm not impressed by anyone doing this because it happens regularly.
meanfinger- July 27, 2009 at 2:30 pm
only reason he did this backwards is because that show first and 10 on espn.. they had a nation wide poll on which was more impressive.. that dude on the bears, and this cat jumpin into the truck bed in his slippers.. they said lets have a jump off.. and here he's clearly showin his ass. this is how you get your name out as a rookie(in the off-season). i think its impressive.. but not half as impressive as him jumpin into the f-150...... and for the jerk off that said this has nothin to do with MMA.. yeah, your kinda right. but how can you not b impressed by this athletic ability.. oh yeah,, and check out adrian wilson's vertical on youtube.. its not a true vertical, because he takes a step and has a lil momentum.. but he clears a 66" bar. i dont care what sport your in.. you gotta give respect to that
agentsmith- July 27, 2009 at 2:24 pm
GSP could do it out of a frozen pool.

You see, he'd have to because it's cold in Canada and such.
MKXii- July 27, 2009 at 2:14 pm
BJ's would of been more impressive if I didn't see a kid from my old high school do it in 4 feet. Vids on youtube search Dan Gay pool jump.
MegaMegaRoboCop- July 27, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Jumping foward you'd have to get your feet higher than jumping backwards. I think foward is more impressive.

Yeah I'm real late to the party but I thought I'd be one of the few that felt this way.
Dmonicideals- July 27, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I wasn't impressed with BJs jump to begin with. It isn't that big of a feat for him. Penn barely dragged his ass out of the water. His amazing flexibility and balance are what let him make the jump, he pulls his feet to his chest and his ass is still in the water when his feet touch. the jump into the back of teh pickup was way more impressive.

I heard Kenny Florian backflipped out of 3 ft of water onto level ground..

And then he exclaimed "I FINISH POOL JUMPS! THAT'S WHAT I'M ABOUT!"
Ted Nutmeg- July 27, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Was that a pitbull that walked by at the very end of the clip? I hope so, for the unintentional comedy.

The F150 jump is crazy mostly because it seems effortless and he does it in slippers!
Fuckyerfrat- July 27, 2009 at 12:10 pm
why the fuck are we watching video of an NFL player on an MMA website? look, wide receivers need a good vertical leap, and they train for that kind of explosive action. fighters don't. BJ's is more impressive, because he doesn't need the skill or to my knowledge, even train it. in any case, Ben please stop wasting our time with NFL players who are not currently in the TUF house.
dbiggles- July 27, 2009 at 12:06 pm
@ juice he is not fucking 5 10 he is listed as 6'2 on the roster which probably means 6'1 5'10 haha if that was the case he was standing in like2.5 feet of water
Juice- July 27, 2009 at 11:59 am
Do a YouTube search for "Keith Eloi WR Jumps Off The Ground Into The Back Of a F150"
Dojima- July 27, 2009 at 11:59 am
I wont be impressed until someone does the penguin-style jump out of a pool. Then slides on his/her belly, does a GSP style windmill into an Antonio Inoki vs. Muhammad Ali styled catch wrestling takedown... the internet would explode if that would happen.
Juice- July 27, 2009 at 11:58 am
I really hate to ruin all of your points regarding size, but someone has to do it.

Penn - 5'9 160
Eloi - 5'10 190

So he has a 1 inch advantage, but he is also carrying 30 pounds more.
