Cutting Through The Bullsh*t: UFC 179 Edition

By Alex Giardini

UFC 179: “Aldo vs. Mendes 2” proved to be exactly what we expected it to be, and that was a one-fight boxing card with a scintillating main event for the ages. The “greatest featherweight fight in history” was nothing short of amazing, with Jose Aldo defeating Chad Mendes for the second time after knocking out “Money” at UFC 142 almost three years ago. The battle was full of wild punches, eye pokes, a lot of heavy breathing, and at times, flying shit that didn’t land.

With a certain “joker” sitting cageside, let’s examine UFC 179, and why it was great and equally pathetic…

Report: Alexander Gustafsson vs. Rashad Evans Likely for January UFC Event in Stockholm

(“So Alex, how do you plan to face the unique strategic challenges that Rashad will pres…uh…dude, don’t freak, but there’s a big-ass ebola virus like 30 feet behind you.” / Photo via Getty
)

As first reported by MMAMania, the UFC is working on a light heavyweight bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Rashad Evans, that would headline a FOX event in in Stockholm, Sweden, on January 24th, 2015. Mania credited the info to “a source with knowledge of the situation,” and the bout has not been officially confirmed yet.

Following his TKO of Jimi Manuwa in March, Gustafsson claimed that he wouldn’t take another fight until he got a rematch with Jon Jones, who had outpointed “The Mauler” during their title bout last September. A self-imposed hiatus is a high-risk strategy in the UFC, and we’re kind of glad to see him reconsider. As for Evans, the one-time UFC light-heavyweight champion is coming off back-to-back wins against Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen, but hasn’t competed at all in 2014 due to the knee injury he sustained in February.

Essentially, it’s a fight that would clinch another title shot for Gustafsson if he wins, but wouldn’t necessarily do the same thing for Evans. Your predictions, please.

Dana White Wants to See Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Johnson — But Gus Says He’ll Wait

(It’s crazy to think that Anthony Johnson used to fight at welterweight, and was like five inches shorter than he is now. / Photo via Getty)

With Alexander Gustafsson temporarily removed from the UFC light-heavyweight title picture — and understandably upset about it — Gustafsson’s manager Manos Terzitane appeared on UFC Tonight on Wednesday, and claimed that “The Mauler” won’t accept any other match than a title fight. That means Gustafsson would voluntarily sit out until at least spring 2015, and that’s only if things go perfectly according to plan. What if Jones vs. Cormier ends in an incredibly close decision or a controversial finish, and the UFC decides to book an immediate rematch? What if the winner of the fight sustains an injury and is sidelined for months?

Nothing is guaranteed in this sport, and holding out for a title shot goes badly more often than it goes well. But in his infinite grace, UFC president Dana White has suggested an alternate path for Gustafsson:

“Gustafsson will probably fight again. We’ll probably do another fight for him,” White said. “He’ll probably fight again to stay active, stay top of mind and the guy has to make money.”

Next up for Gustafsson could be the dangerous rising 205-pound star Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. White confirmed that Gustafsson vs. Johnson would probably be the fight that would make the most sense.

Jon Jones Injury Update: How It Happened, And Reactions From Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson

(“So grateful to have Alistair Overeem as a new teammate!! What a humble and hard-working individual” — Jon Jones on July 18th. Keep reading, this will become relevant soon.)

By now, you’ve surely heard that Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier has been postponed to January due to Bones suffering a torn left meniscus and sprained ankle in training on Monday. We should point out that these things happen all the time in MMA, and it’s nobody’s fault…but feel free to shake your little fists at Alistair Overeem. From a Sherdog report:

According to [Jones's trainer Greg Jackson], the injury occurred while Jones was defending a takedown from UFC heavyweight talent Alistair Overeem during wrestling practice.

“It’s part of the game, it wasn’t like…somebody went for a flying kick and dislocated [something]. Somebody went for a takedown, [Jones] stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way and down he went. He was fighting it, and he just twisted it. And then it just popped,” Jackson said.

“Alistair’s maybe 240, Jon’s 220. It’s not like he was working with a giant moose. It was just one of those things.”

I’m sure Jackson’s right, but considering that Overeem previously left the Blackzilians team in the wake of allegations that he destroyed Guto Inocente’s knee out of frustration, it doesn’t reflect well on the Reem as a training partner.

As you can imagine, Jones’s rivals Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson have some opinions about the scrapped fight between Jones and DC. Short version: They’re not too psyched about it. First, here’s Cormier respectfully implying that Jones is a pussy…

Correction: Jon Jones Suffered Cut Above *Right* Eye — But He Didn’t Want You to Know That

(via Instagram.com/jonnybones)

By now, you’ve probably seen the video of UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones getting his left eyebrow stitched up last week, following an apparent training injury. With his UFC 178 title defense against Daniel Cormier just two months away, the release of the clip was an interesting choice, as most fighters tend not to publicly broadcast their physical vulnerabilities before fights.

“I’m gonna take u down and grind my elbow into that cut you got today,” Cormier wrote on Thursday in response. “Put a bullseye on that thing. Some things should remain private.”

So what if I told you that the video was intentionally manipulated, in an attempt to trick Cormier into targeting the wrong eye? This morning, Pedro Ivo Jr. from Portal do Vale Tudo dropped some knowledge on us via email:

Jon Jones manipulated his instagram video about the cut he suffered. You can see clearly that in one moment they are stitching the RIGHT eyebrow…and not the left. Why did he do this? It’s the same eyebrow that Gustafsson opened at [their] fight. He is trying to hide that he opened the same side.. so DC wont notice this!

And yeah, if you watch the video closely, you’ll see that the certificates on the wall behind him are displayed in reverse. Oh snap. I don’t appreciate your ruse, Jon.

Alexander Gustafsson Suffers Knee Injury, Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier Set for New UFC 178 Main Event

(And here we have Daniel Cormier tossing around a grown man like a child.)

Due to a meniscus tear suffered in training this week, UFC light-heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson has pulled out of his title rematch with Jon Jones, which was scheduled to headline UFC 178 (September 27th, Las Vegas). The UFC confirmed the bad news this evening, but luckily the promotion has a replacement already loaded up — and it’s the fight that Jones wanted all along.

Coming in to replace Gustafsson will be undefeated ex-heavyweight Daniel Cormier, who most recently choked out Dan Henderson in May during his second appearance at 205 pounds, then took the mic and executed one of the greatest call-outs since Luther clinked his bottles together in The Warriors. I mean, really, it was badass. Just watch it:

Cormier was slated to undergo knee surgery this month to repair an LCL injury that he suffered in the Henderson fight, but he’s decided to delay it, and claims that he’s “good to go.” As for Jones, he’s coming off his dominant decision win against Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 in April, and has been hard at work perfecting his new heel persona.

The 12 Most Awesome/Terrible ‘EA Sports UFC’ Demo Videos Created by Actual Users

(Nut shots. It’s in the game.™)

By Ryan Harkness

Last week, the much anticipated EA Sports reboot of the UFC video game franchise went live in demo form — those fortunate enough to already own a next gen console got to take control of Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson and beat the living piss out of each other for as long as that stayed entertaining. And based on the hundreds of user-uploaded videos, it seems like people are indeed entertained…if not always for the right reasons.

We’ve now dug up the 12 best videos created thus far so you can get a closer look at how the game plays when in the hands of semi-competent gamers. Follow me after the jump to see all the best knockouts, tap-outs, and glitch-outs that EA SPORTS UFC has to offer.

A lot of YouTubers tend to upload knockout videos that are 8 minutes long and feature two to three knockouts. This is terrible. So don’t bother with any other allegedly ‘hilarious’ and / or ‘brutal’ knockout highlight videos. Watch this one, which crams over 25 knockouts into less than two minutes. Some compelling ass-kicking music and 1080p rendering really lets you enjoy watching Alexander Gustafsson recreate such famous KO poses as the Etim, the Salmon, and the Quarry. What, no Schaub trying to catch his soul?

Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson 2 Official for UFC 178, September 27th in Toronto

(Photo via Getty)

Jon Jones will attempt to make his eighth light-heavyweight title defense at UFC 178 (September 27th; Air Canada Centre, Toronto), in a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson. UFC officials confirmed the booking last night. Jones vs. Gustafsson 2 will take place almost exactly a year after their first meeting at UFC 165*, which Jones won in a thrilling but somewhat controversial decision. Since then, Jones defeated Glover Teixeira in an utterly dominant five-round assault at UFC 172, and Gustafsson TKO’d Jimi Manuwa, handing the Nigerian-English slugger his first loss.

The lead-up to this fight has already been loaded with drama, as Jones seemed to be dragging his feet on signing the bout agreement to rematch Gustafsson, then tried to argue for a fight against Daniel Cormier instead. But Dana White put his foot down, and here we are. As Jones explained in a statement:

Jon Jones Still Hasn’t Signed Contract for Alexander Gustafsson Rematch, Wants Daniel Cormier Instead [UPDATED]

(“Yes, you…the tall kid in the back.” / Photo via MMAWeekly)

During a recent “UFC Embedded” video blog, we saw Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta meet with Jon Jones‘s manager in order to lock down a rematch between Jones and top light-heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson. That footage was filmed two weeks ago, and so far, no progress has been made on the fight. Jones’s camp has refused to sign for undisclosed reasons, which probably have to do with money, timing, or both. Luckily, Daniel Cormier has figured out a solution to this stalemate:

“I know this will probably be unpopular,” Cormier told Franklin McNeil of SportsWorldNews.com. “But if [Jones] won’t sign, whether it be for money or a lack of wanting to fight the kid, I’ll fight Alexander Gustafsson. But it should be for the interim title…If they’re putting a belt on the line, I don’t care what date it is. It was never about Jones, I just want the title. Besides, it’ll work out better for [Jones]; he won’t have to fight both of us.”

Keep in mind that Cormier’s knee is a giant question mark right now, which puts his interim title fight suggestion squarely into “just sayin’ stuff” territory. Plus, the UFC usually creates interim titles as a last resort — not a couple months after a healthy champion’s last defense. Furthermore, Cormier’s tongue-in-cheek line that Jones wouldn’t have to fight both DC and Gustafsson is probably the best reason why the UFC wouldn’t pursue this plan.
