VIDEO: Nick Newell Receives His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

(…which begs the question, how are *your* New Year’s Resolutions going? / Props: YouTube.com/TapCancerOut)

By Oliver Chan

CagePotato favorite “Notorious” Nick Newell is off to a fast start in 2014, earning his black-belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Andrew Calandrelli at Ultimate MMA in New Haven. The video above was provided by Nick’s training partner Jon Thomas, who runs the awesome charity Tap Cancer Out, which if you recall is something Nick is very involved in. Nick’s pretty good at this Jiu-Jitsu thing, with 8 of his 11 pro MMA wins coming via submission.

If that’s not enough to make you feel like a lazy floor-turd, Nick also recently spent time with some future ninjas at the “Helping Hands Foundation” where he inspired other kids by teaching them that ten fingers are pretty overrated.

So just to summarize, it’s only February, and Nick’s 2014 to-do list looks like this:

1.  Earn his BJJ Black Belt

2.  Inspire the next generation of BAMF’s

3.  Win WSOF Title.

While we send our sincere congratulations to Nick for this huge achievement, we do have to ask him to scale it back a bit. Seriously, Nick…you’re making us all look bad.

Sad Video of the Day: Taekwondo Blackbelt vs. Board Ends in No Contest

(Props to Deadspin for passing this along.)

It has finally happened. After years of mocking everything from ugly t-shirts to stupid tattoos, I have found something that has genuinely left me speechless. This god-awful McDojo demonstration featuring a “Taekwondo” “blackbelt” repeatedly trying (and failing, obviously) to break a board has me at a loss for words. From the nervous laughter from spectators throughout the video to the Mac from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia-esque form that the guy kicks with to the chunk of wood that flies off the board and hits a little girl halfway through the video, the only thing I can think of writing to go with this involves a series of completely unrelated GIFs with “Write your own damn jokes, comments section.” at the end.

Dubious Claim of the Day: Dos Anjos Says His Jiu-Jitsu is Superior to Sotiropoulos’

(Video courtesy of ESPN)

There’s a long running argument that there are different levels of Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts, which is often backed by how competitors do against others of the same rank.

According to Rafael Dos Anjos, he feels that he is on another level than fellow BJJ black belt George Sotiropoulos, whom he faces Saturday at UFC 132.

“His style is dangerous; it has some techniques and positions that are dangerous, but not too much. It’s ABC jiu-jitsu,” he told ESPN, describing his own style as “traditional” jiu-jitsu. “Eddie Bravo’s style uses half guard,” dos Anjos said. “[My BJJ coach, Roberto] “Gordo” [Correa de Lima] made the half guard!”

‘WTF’ Video Roundup: Xtreme Arm Wrestling, Human Wrecking Balls, Black-Belt Monkey

(Props: Fightlinker)

It’s time for a look at the weird, wild, wacky side of martial arts. First is the above clip of a XARM (Xtreme Arm Wrestling) match, where two competitors have their hands taped together, then proceed to beat each other senseless. I think the goal is still to pin your opponent’s arm on the table, but as you’ll see, that’s not quite how it plays out. The saddest part is that one of the dudes behind this spectacle is Art Davie, one of the co-creators of the UFC. Christ, even Bob Meyrowitz laughs at this guy. I feel bad for those XARM’ers wrists. And their mothers, of course.

Meet Craig and Paul Pumphrey, stars of G4′s upcoming series Human Wrecking Balls. Both are members of the International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame, and both enjoy breaking shit with their bare hands. My favorite part of this promo clip is 0:36-0:39, where the dude just straight-up runs through a wall. I thought that only happened in Kool-Aid commercials. Oh yeah!

Must See: Andre Galvao Jiu-Jitsu Pwnage

In his first match at last weekend’s World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Andre Galvao was paired up against someone who clearly wasn’t in his league. What followed was an unforgettably ridiculous display of grappling domination, in which Galvao turned the Mundials into his own personal And 1 Mixtape of jiu-jitsu. At the 1:09-1:17 and 1:42-1:56 marks he’s basically breakdancing on his opponent’s back, and we’d like to see more MMA fighters do the somersault guard-pass that Galvao pulls off at 1:35. Props to StoryLords.tv.
