Everyone Wish Urijah Faber’s Sister A Full Recovery

Some sad news out of California today, as it was recently reported that former WEC champion and current #1 bantamweight contender Urijah Faber‘s sister was in a car accident late Friday night and has had to undergo major surgery which has left her in a medically induced coma as a result. Sacbee.com was the first to break the story:

Michaella Tastad, 19, was driving home Friday with a friend at 3 a.m. when she rear ended a vehicle slowing down near the site of a single-car accident, according to California Highway Patrol Officer David Martinez. A few minutes later, three more cars collided. Three people were taken to the hospital, but only Tastad suffered major injuries, Martinez said.

Faber said his sister received life-threatening head trauma and is in a medically induced coma at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. He said Tastad also has a collapsed lung, spleen damage and several other injuries. Part of Tastad’s skull was removed and she underwent a second surgery to insert a shunt to help drain fluid, Faber said.

On Monday, Faber said his family received their first good news when doctors briefly took his sister off medicine that induces the coma.

“She gave a peace sign and wiggled her toes,” Faber said. “Then they put her back under … We are done being scared and now it’s about having the recovery we all want.”

Bummer Alert: Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis’s Last Night on Earth

In a new tribute/report titled "The Man That Was ‘Mask’," Sherdog adds some backstory to the tragic death of TapouT founder Charles Lewis Jr. As it turns out, Lewis was as sober as Jeffrey Kirby was drunk, and the street-racing theory is probably off-base as well. Here’s what we know now:

[Lewis] was on his way home from the gym with his girlfriend Lacey at 1 a.m., the only time he could fit working out into a hectic schedule. Lewis took pride in his deceiving physique, and many questioned if he was really 45 years old, even after officials confirmed it.

That night, Lewis and Lacey had decided to drive by a condominium apartment they had been looking into purchasing over the next few days. It is believed Lewis’ fire-engine red Ferrari occupied the middle lane when Jeffery Kirby and his companion came up along the left side in a white 1977 Porsche. At the scene, black skid marks snake up onto the median’s curb right as the road bends slightly, then drag for 500 or more feet across the three lanes. They indicate Kirby’s car bounced off the road’s island divider before t-boning into Lewis’ vehicle’s backend, sending the Ferrari into a 180-degree spin. The car traveled backwards before the driver’s side wailed directly into a cement light pole, slicing it into two parts.

It was the first time in a few months that Lewis had had the opportunity to enjoy the luxury ride he’d purchased over a year ago. The car had slept at a friend’s showroom until Lewis had been asked to bring it to a photo shoot that day for Dub magazine. High speeds didn’t seem unfathomable under the circumstances, though friends said they couldn’t see Lewis engaging in a dangerous street race for superiority. Lewis didn’t know Kirby, nor was Lewis believed to be drinking at the time. Lewis never touched alcohol, as many will attest.

A criminal trial for Kirby is tentatively scheduled for next month.

We really hope this isn’t true, but the chatter is not good. By now it’s been confirmed. From RingleaderFightNews:

Newport Beach CA — Fox News 11 L.A. reported that a red Ferrari split in half as it slammed into a light pole in Newport Beach today, killing the driver and injuring a passenger. The accident on southbound Jamboree Road near Camelback Street occurred just before 1 a.m., according to a Newport Beach Police Department lieutenant…
The impact of the crash broke the car in half and left the front portion of the high-performance Italian sports car crushed by the light pole. "It apparently was traveling at a high rate of speed, and it left the roadway, hit the curb, took out a light pole, and … someone is deceased in the vehicle and we don’t know who that person is at this particular time," Newport Beach police Lt. Steven Shulman told ABC7 at the crash site.

An unnamed source has told Ringleadfightnews.com that the deceased driver was TapouT Crew member and part owner of the multi-million dollar company, “Mask.” The information could not be verified and is still speculation at this point.

Police Lt. Steven Shulman told Fox News 11, "the coroner will identify that person, notify the family, and hopefully the passenger that we believe was in the vehicle will survive the injuries and we will find out a little bit more at that point."

A second victim was taken to a hospital following the accident, a Newport Beach Fire Department dispatch supervisor said. Her condition was not immediately reported. The injured victim was a female passenger who was ejected in the crash, On Scene reported.
