Video: Chael Sonnen Breaks Down Fabricio Werdum vs. Mark Hunt on SportsCenter

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for — Chael Sonnen‘s debut appearance as a professional sports-talker on ESPN. In this clip that aired earlier today on SportsCenter, Sonnen breaks down tomorrow night’s UFC 180 main event between Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt, answering discussion questions from some random stiff* who mispronounces Werdum’s name, disses Roy Nelson’s gut, and ends the segment by bringing up the return of Brock Lesnar. Actually, that part spurred Chael’s best line:

“I called [Lesnar's] manager Paul Heyman this morning. I said, ‘Paul, it’s Chael. I’ve got a new job on SportsCenter. If you give me a quote regarding Brock, it’ll really make me look good.’ He said ‘Chael,’ and I quote: ‘I’m sleeping,’ and then he hung up.”

* I mean, I’m sure some of you people watch ESPN and know who Chael’s straight-man is, but I don’t, and he’s not worth googling.

ESPN Hires Chael Sonnen as MMA Analyst; Bad Guy’s New Gig Starts This Friday

(The American Gangster…The Bad Guy…The Stephen A. Smith of cage-fighting?)

Man, talk about failing upward. Four months after being fired from his FOX Sports commentary gig in the wake of two high-profile drug test failures, former UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has gotten a new broadcast job at a much more prominent sports network. The Associated Press broke the news today that Sonnen has been hired by ESPN as an MMA analyst, and will make his debut this Friday during ESPN’s coverage of UFC 180. That’s right folks, Uncle Chael will now be slingin’ hot takes on the Worldwide Leader. This man is goddamned bulletproof.

“We know Chael has made some mistakes in the past,” ESPN senior coordinating producer Glenn Jacobs told the AP. “He’s been honest. He’s been up-front about it. He has paid for the mistakes that he has made, and he’s moving forward…The insights that he has on the sport and the ways he sees it, our fans are going to be so much better from watching him on the air. They’re going to be able to watch the fight and look for totally different things than they would have otherwise.”

Sonnen expressed gratitude for the opportunity, and made it clear that he wouldn’t sweep his own past under the rug, or minimize the issue of PEDs in the sport:

Weekend Roundup: Ex-WSOF Champ *Throws* Fight, God-Awful Tattoos, UFC Overload & More

(Photo via Getty)

By Alex Giardini

The weekend is in the books, and although many of you were indulging in baseball playoffs and college football madness, there was plenty of MMA to equally boast and complain about. Apart from the always-vibrant regional circuit, which included MFC 41 and SFL 35 last Saturday night (watch a dude go through the cage door looking like he was on the wrong end of a Stone Cold Stunner right here), there were four major MMA shows taking place in 48 hours, two of which came from the same promotion that may or may not be ruining the sport with its inflated and overstressed schedule.

To top it all off, there were also a handful of stories outside the cage to boast about, some amusing and some downright miserable.

Here is the Cage Potato “Weekend Roundup,” and quite frankly, the only recap you need:

Battlegrounds MMA Results and GIFs: Roan Carneiro Wins the One Night, Eight-Man Welterweight Tournament

(Imagine this but 30 pounds heavier / Photo via Getty)

Chael Sonnen. Jim Ross. One night tournament. Holy shit. Are you ready for this?

We certainly weren’t (and judging by the sparse attendance, nobody else was either) The event was probably one of the most “freakshow-ish” events of the entire year, and we loved every second of it. Here’s a brief recap of the festivities!

The tournament, which was in the welterweight division, started off with Trey Houston vs. Jesse Taylor. Taylor took Houston down early and after a period of inactivity on the ground Houston managed to grab Taylor’s arm and lock in an armbar. Check out the GIF (this and others via Zombie Prophet/Fansided):

The Bad Guy Is Back: Chael Sonnen Cuts Promo for ‘Battlegrounds MMA One’

Battlegrounds MMA is hosting an old-school one-night eight-man tournament this Friday at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, featuring Jesse Taylor, Cody McKenzie, and blah blah blah that part’s not really important. What’s important is that the $19.95 PPV will be commentated by semi-disgraced UFC star Chael Sonnen and pro-wrestling legend Jim Ross. The fighters might bring the steak, but brother, Sonnen and Ross will provide the sizzle.

Above, Sonnen hypes the event in his usual silver-tongued style. Below, Jim Ross commentates video games, just because it’s hilarious.

Metamoris 4 Videos: Andre Galvao Chokes Out Chael Sonnen, Josh Barnett Submits Dean Lister

(Props: GrapLandTeam Nalchik. Get it while it lasts.)

Chael Sonnen‘s headlining appearance at Metamoris 4 against Andre Galvao on Saturday ended pretty much how we expected: with Sonnen tapping to a far, far superior grappler.

From the opening seconds of the match — when Sonnen took Galvao to the mat with a virtually undefended single-leg takedown — Sonnen’s strategy was to remain in top position and defend whatever Galvao was throwing at him from below. Outside of a cut that Sonnen sustained near his right eye, possibly due to an early clash of heads, the American Gangster did well to keep himself out of danger for the first ten minutes of the match.

Eventually, Galvao gets tired of playing around, and sweeps his way onto Sonnen’s back (see: 13:38-14:44 in the video above). From there, Galvao is relentless in his attack on Sonnen’s neck, looking to sink a rear-naked choke despite Sonnen’s game defenses. But it’s only a matter of time before Galvao advances to checkmate, and Sonnen taps at the video’s 17:28 mark, while a pleased Anderson Silva celebrates in the crowd. Watch until the end to hear Sonnen cut the obligatory pro-wrestling style promo before exiting the building.

After the jump: The Metamoris heavyweight championship bout between Josh Barnett and Dean Lister, which Barnett won via scarf-hold choke with just ten seconds left in the match.

Chael Sonnen Still Plans on Showing Up to Metamoris 4 on Saturday, Despite NSAC Threats

(Galvao may have the accolades, but he’s never dealt with an elite-level oil-check artist like Sonnen. /Photo via Sherdog)

Chael Sonnen’s jiu-jitsu coach Fabiano Scherner confirmed to MMAFighting.com last night that Sonnen will indeed travel to Los Angeles for his scheduled headliner against Andre Galvao at the Metamoris 4 grappling event on Saturday. Sonnen runs the risk of being fined hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, for violating his two-year suspension from competition. But as the man himself put it…

(Sonnen’s twitter bio still describes him as “Godfather of integrity.” Awesome.)

It should be pointed out that the NSAC’s ability to fine Sonnen for competing in a grappling competition in California is still a major point of contention. Earlier this month, Sonnen’s lawyer Ross Goodman sent NSAC chairman Francisco Aguilar a letter explaining why a jiu-jitsu competition doesn’t fall under the commission’s jurisdiction:

The term ‘unarmed combat’ is defined in NRS 467.0107 as ‘boxing or any form of competition in which a blow is usually struck which may reasonably be expected to inflict injury. There is no dispute that the NSAC has no jurisdiction or authority to regulate, license or sanction jiu-jitsu and other forms of grappling. Moreover, jiu-jitsu does not fall within the Nevada definition of unarmed combat because it does not involve “blows” of any kind. Likewise, it would be a violation of due process to expand the interpretation of ‘fighting’ broader than the statutory definition of unarmed combat
