Opinion: Tyron Woodley Should Focus On Welterweight Division Instead of Michael Bisping

Tyron Woodley. The UFC welterweight champion. The man looking for a big payday. And why the hell not? That’s the point of prize fighting in the first place isn’t it? To throw your bones at another human being and get paid loads of cash. At least that’s how things would be in a perfect world. Instead, fighters are competing against each other for a disporportionate amount of money compared to what they bring in. Tyron Woodley wants his big payday and he’s looking to get it through battling against fellow champion Michael Bisping. The problem with that is Woodley once again has the worst timing.

Opinion: Was Dominick Cruz Crushed Under The Weight Of His Ego?

Ego. It’s something I tell my fighters never to have. It’s helpful in its ability to push through pain, to overcome fear and doubt, telling yourself that you belong in the ring or cage. But as useful as it can be, it’s something impossible to fully control. Some say that “ego is the fuel a fighter needs to get to the top.” Still, I say it’s useless. “If you want to knock a man out, you don’t look for it. You allow it to happen.” Training camp after training camp this is the motto that is instilled into my fighters. It’s exactly the approach Dominick Cruz has followed for his entire career. That is, until UFC 207.

UFC 207 Picks: This Is The Only Way Cody Garbrandt Can Beat Dominick Cruz

UFC 207 is quickly approaching and I for one can’t wait. While the card has its fair share of standout matches, the co-main event is certainly one the fans should keep their eyes on as Cody Garbrandt bids for the bantamweight title again champ Dominick Cruz. The trash talk has been colorful even finding its way onto social media. Both men have been trading jabs, Cruz arguably getting the better of Garbrandt in the exchanges, and now they’ll trade their virtual punches for some legitimate action on Friday night.

Fight Night 88 Highlights/Results: Garbrandt Sleeps Almeida, Stephens Upsets Barao + More

(via UFC on FOX)

With last weekend’s Fight Night 88 main event matchup between Cody Garbrandt and Thomas Almeida, we were being promised a glimpse at the future of the bantamweight division regardless of who won. More of us may have been banking on the latter to emerge as that future champion, sure, but it would be hard to discredit either fighter as anything but a top contender following an impressive win.

Given Almeida’s tendency to get rocked at least once in every one of his UFC fights thus far, one would assume that his camp would have placed an emphasis on head movement and staying off the line against a similarly devastating puncher like Garbrandt. Then again, this is Chute Box we’re talking about after all, so it’s likely that their gameplan for the fight never stretched beyond “swing for the goddamn fences and hope you land first.” As such, Almeida’s first round KO loss to the Team Alpha Male up-and-comer demonstrated that, as dynamic as the young Brazilian may be offensively, he still has a bit of work to do defensively. Live and learn.

Full results and highlights for Fight Night 88 are after the jump.

Here’s That TUF 22 Skirmish We’ve All Been Dying to See, Apparently [Video]

(Wanderlei Silva approves this threat.)

Conor McGregor thinks TJ Dillashaw is a snake in the grass, a child, and perhaps most importantly, a twerp. He’s been saying this for weeks now, and recent events seem to more or less confirm that he predicts deez tings. Why he’s been so persistent in pointing out Dillashaw’s disloyalty is a bit of a mystery, but personally, I think it’s because McGregor actually happens to like — and dare I say it, respect – Urijah Faber.

On last night’s (was it last night? Who gives a f*ck) episode of The Ultimate Fighter, McGregor’s constant needling of Team Alpha Male finally came to a head, by which I mean that it led to a rousing spat of pushy-shovsies filled with profanities, incredibly sexual threats, and laughter. The whole thing was just primo reality TV, really.

Video after the jump.

Prospect Watch: UFC Signs Undefeated Alpha Male Product Cody Garbrandt, Will Face Marcus Brimage at UFC 182

(via Met Con Photos.)

“The Next Jon Jones” he may not be, but undefeated bantamweight Cody “No Love” Garbrandt is one of the more promising prospects to be scooped up by the UFC in recent years. On Saturday, it was announced that the Team Alpha Male standout had signed with promotion and would face Marcus Brimage at UFC 182 in January, which is not exactly a cakewalk for any up-an-comer (not named Conor McGregor).

Despite holding a professional record of just 5-0, Garbrandt will bring a ton of experience into his UFC debut. A boxer since the age of 14 with a 32-1 record, Garbrandt also made waves on the mat while in high school, eventually earning an invite to wrestle at the University of Michigan. After transitioning to MMA in 2009, “No Love” racked up a 4-2 amateur record before turning pro just two years ago and has stopped all five of his opponents with strikes in the time since (four of those in the first round).

BloodyElbow’s Zane Simon has done a great little writeup on Garbrandt that we’d highly recommend you check out, but in the meantime, join us after the jump to see his most recent fight against Charles Stanford.
