Fitness for the CagePotato: Nate Moore’s Five Tips for Getting Into Fighting Shape

(Photo via CombatCircuit.com)

If you’re like us, you spend each morning staring at your lovehandles in the mirror and crying. But life doesn’t have to be this way. We recently got in touch with Nate Moore — the Strikeforce veteran and founder of the Combat Circuit conditioning system — and begged him for some fitness advice. Nate gave us a fantastic overview of his MMA-inspired fitness philosophy, which you can read below. Follow Nate on Twitter and YouTube, learn more about Combat Circuit program here, and stay tuned for more good advice from Nate in the near future…

**********

1. Start slow for safety, good technique, and maximum results.

Here’s what you think: I’ll never be Cain Velasquez if I don’t train my nuts off every day, twice a day, balls to the wall, punching through pain and gaining mental toughness and grit. Cain never takes a day off, and he never once threw a punch at half intensity. I have a lot of catching up to do, so I need to be at full intensity, all the time.

Here’s reality: You’ll never be Cain, but if you go balls to the wall right off the bat, you’ll learn bad technique, develop imbalances, and your overworked areas will eventually experience burnout and injury. It’s easy to mess up your body and your MMA technique when you go too fast and too hard. The biggest mistake people make when learning a new technique is that they try to do it as fast as they can before they learn how the movement is performed and before they know how it should feel. They continue to practice crappy technique, thinking they need to do it harder and faster to make it work.

What to do: Try to be calm and relaxed when you train, especially when you begin a new movement. Start every exercise, new technique, workout, and training camp slowly. Gradually ramp up your intensity and effort, until you find a good balance between relaxation and activation. Try to enjoy the slower, less intense pace, without trying too hard or flexing too hard or losing control, so you can learn what correct technique feels like.

Fitness Motivation: 18 Photos/GIFs of Women Deadlifting

Part of powerlifting’s holy trinity — along with squats and bench press — the deadlift involves grabbing a barbell and lifting it straight up to your hips. We’ve collected some of our favorite visual examples, which continue in the gallery after the jump. Feel free to debate their form in the comments section, and visit our previous fitness motivation photo galleries right here.

Fitness Motivation: 20 Photos of Sexy Women Doing Pull-Ups

If our ongoing series on fitness motivation photos has proven anything, it’s that all forms of exercise can be made sexy, as long as the subject is already in shape and wearing booty shorts. (By the way, good luck getting away with that outfit at Planet Fitness. Sound the Lunk Alarm, you guys! That’s blatant gymtimidation!)

Today’s gallery focuses on pull-ups, a classic bodyweight exercise that targets pretty much everything above the waist. Be “inspired” by the strong women banging ‘em out in the gallery after the jump, and please re-visit our previous fitness motivation galleries on tire-flipping, rope-swinging, kettlebell-lifting, and squatting. Lots more to come. Enjoy…

Note: The last two are kinda sorta NSFW.

Fitness Motivation: 14 Photos of Sexy Women Swinging Ropes

(Photo via @feliceherrig. Full gallery is after the jump.)

As I predicted, Tuesday’s “Sexy Women Flipping Tires” gallery — as dumb as it was — wound up generating way more pageviews than anything else we posted this week, which means that these Fitness Motivation photo galleries are here to stay. You only have yourselves to blame.

Today’s gallery was inspired by MMA fighter Felice Herrig, and focuses on sexy women swinging ropes (aka battle ropes, combat ropes). Check out the photos below, and if you have any suggestions for the next Fitness Motivation gallery, drop ‘em in the comments. At this point, “sexy women doing squats” is a strong front-runner.

Fitness Motivation: 14 Photos of Sexy Women Flipping Tires

I’ve become fascinated by the so-called “fitness motivation” Internet trend. Basically, these are photos of hard-bodied men and women working out — usually accompanied by inspirational quotes — with the apparent goal of motivating you to get off your computer/smartphone and get to the gym. I’m sure you have at least one annoying crossfitter friend who posts this kind of crap to tell the world that OMG they’re training for life you guys. But honestly, fitness motivation photos are just another Internet fetish, like feet, or whispering. What is this photo inspiring you to do, exactly?

So earlier today, right before the Chael news broke and I was looking for something to do, I decided to search Pinterest and Google for fitness motivation photos, and see if I could spot any trends. The first one that stuck out is that healthy women love to flip tires. Tire-flipping is a metaphor, actually. If you can flip a tire, you can flip anything. So here are some photos I found of sexy women flipping tires, as promised. Check ‘em out in the gallery after the jump, and stay tuned for more fitness motivation photo galleries, whether you like it or not.

I hope that “girls flipping tires” is an untapped Internet sub-fetish. I hope that thousands of people are searching for it daily. I hope…

‘WTF?!’ of the Day: Get in Shape with Tim Sylvia (Yes, THAT Tim Sylvia)

(And if you act fast, he’ll throw in “How to Throw a Leg Kick” for free!)

Are you a fat, nerdy MMA fan who lives with his mother and spends his time trolling the Internet? Well, obviously not, so you’ll have to play along here. But if you were overweight, and also decided that the whole “eating healthier and exercising” thing didn’t involve enough former UFC champions for your liking, then would I have a treat for you. Tim Sylvia has founded The Maine-Iac 90 Day Weight Loss Challenge, so that you can get in shape with the former UFC champion.

So what is inspiring Tim Sylvia to challenge his loyal fans? Is he trying to persuade people that fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son? Is he concerned about the rising obesity rates in our children? Believe it or not, it appears he’s doing this due to his own weight issues. I know, I can’t think of a single mean-spirited, sarcastic comment to make here, either, so let’s hear it from the former champion himself:

Hey Fatso: Get Your Sorry Ass in Shape With Georges St. Pierre’s ‘RUSHFIT’

(Video courtesy of GSPRUSHFIT. Props to our bud Brian D’Souza for the tip.)

One way or another, we all want Georges St. Pierre‘s body. (*cough*) So it was just a matter of time until GSP recognized the opportunity and put together his own home workout DVD series with trainer Erik Owings — conveniently released in December to hook as many pudgy New Year’s resolution-makers as possible.

But St. Pierre’s new RUSHFIT series is no Situation-style cash-in. The eight-week, 45-minute-per-day program focuses on high-intensity circuit training, with a nutritional component to go along with the workouts. In other words, it actually looks like it would produce results, assuming you have the motivation to stick with it. (Full disclosure: You don’t.) And all you need is a couple of dumb-bells and your own ever-increasing bodyweight.

You can order the RUSHFIT DVD set at gsprushfit.com for $60-$70. After the jump: A couple more preview clips, and some crucial information from the website’s FAQ
