Numbers Confirm That WAY More People Receive FOX Sports 1 Than FUEL TV

Dana White Fertittas Brock Lesnar Lorenzo Frank III MMA photos funny
(That awkward moment when you realize you jumped ship way, way too soon.)

I imagine that after receiving the ratings numbers for Fight Night 26: Shogun vs. Sonnen this morning, Dana White calmly asked everyone to get the fuck out of his office, closed the door, threw on some Rage and did the following…

It would be hard to blame him if he did, because early figures for the UFC’s debut on the FOX Sports 1 network are nothing short of astounding. According to a press release sent out this morning, Saturday’s main card at the TD Garden averaged over 1.7 million viewers, shattering the UFC’s previous FUEL ratings like they were Corey Hill’s leg:

FOX Sports 1, driven by UFC FIGHT NIGHT: SHOGUN VS. SONNEN, posted an average audience of 1.71 million viewers in prime time (8:00-11:00 PM ET), a more than 10-fold increase compared to that which SPEED, FOX Soccer and FUEL TV combined to deliver on the comparable night a year ago (141,000). Among younger demographics the comparisons are even more significant. FOX Sports 1 viewership was over 25 times greater than SPEED/FOX Soccer/FUEL TV among both Adults 18-49 and Men 18-49, and 40 times greater among Adults 18-34 and M18-34.

Fox Sports 1 Reaches Deal With Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, and Dish Network in Time for Tomorrow’s Launch

Just a few days ago, tens of millions of fight fans might have been wondering if they’d be able to watch Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 26 event. The fight card will help launch the new all-sports cable channel Fox Sports 1, but the new network had yet to reach deals with major television distributors like Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, and the Dish Network.

At the 11th hour, however, FS1 has reached a distribution deal with all of those providers, expanding the reach of tomorrow’s “Shogun vs. Sonnen” card by about forty million viewers. MMA Junkie has more details.

“You can check FOX Sports 1′s availability in your area at foxsports1.com. The channel now will be available in approximately 90 million homes for its heavily promoted launch.

“The channel, which will become the primary cable home of the UFC (along with the also-launching FOX Sports 2), replaces the organization’s previous broadcasts on FX and FUEL TV. The UFC will contribute to 5,000 annual hours of live programming, which also will include NCAA basketball and football, NASCAR, soccer, boxing and other sports.”

This news hits home for this writer. Before the announcement, I was facing the horrible prospect of either having to go watch the fight with people outside of my basement lair or being forced to actually make other plans for a Saturday night other than watching fights *shudder*.

Close call. How many of you taters does this development affect and what were you planning to do if you couldn’t have watched Shogun, Chael, Alistair, McGregor, JLau, UrijahCole and the rest of ‘em?

The UFC has announced an official date for its long-awaited return to Boston. Earlier today, UFC president Dana White took to his Twitter account to release the following statement:

For those uninitiated, Speed TV is set to be relaunched as Fox Sports 1 on August 17. Fox Sports 1 will be available in 90 million homes, and will not only feature its own daily news programs, but also live college football and basketball, soccer, NASCAR and UFC events, with plans of hosting Major League Baseball games starting in 2014. UFC Events Moving to Fox Sports 1 Starting on August 17th, Followed by Wednesday ‘Fight Nights’

(“Listen, Erin, come train with me in Glendale for a couple weeks. I’ll teach you a few things. You’ll never have to feel like a victim again.” Photo via @erinandrews)

During a Fox Sports press conference held yesterday in New York, more details were revealed about the UFC’s cable-TV migration from FX and FUEL to the soon-to-launch FOX Sports 1. Here’s everything you need to know:

- FOX Sports 1 will launch on Saturday, August 17th, featuring a live UFC event in prime time. At this point, no fights have been announced for the event, which has been officially dubbed “UFC on FS1 1,” God help us.

- Following the 8/17 channel launch, the UFC will air 12 “Fight Night” events on Fox Sports 1 through 2014. Though the dates haven’t been finalized, the live fight-cards will take place on Wednesdays, and air from 8-11 p.m.

- FS1 will replace the Speed channel, and will be available in over 90 million homes around the nation. In addition to UFC programming, the new channel will feature Major League Baseball (beginning in 2014), soccer, college football and basketball, and NASCAR events.

- No, this doesn’t mean that UFC events will now be spread over three cable channels. All of the UFC’s programming on FX and FUEL — from Fight Nights, to prelim broadcasts, to preview shows, to their UFC Tonight series — will be moving to Fox Sports 1 starting in August. Well, with one possible exception. When asked about The Ultimate Fighter‘s shift to FS1, Dana White said, “We’re not ready to talk about that yet.” Hmm. Could the old dog finally be put out of its misery?

- As Fox Sports Media Group’s COO and co-president Eric Shanks explained, regarding the UFC’s channel-consolidation:
