FilmPotato: Gina Carano Lands Role as “Vixen” in Kickboxer Remake

(Needless to say, the casting agents were “empress wid their performance.” I’ll see myself out. via Getty)

When it was announced that we would be seeing a Kickboxer remake starring Georges St. Pierre and Dave Bautista back in May, I had the totally reasonable reaction of threatening to “eat a baby” if a remake of The Raid was also announced, which happened just days later. True to my word, I am now on something of a hiatus from public life, and would just like to let Mrs. Annabelle Smith of 247 Bakersfield Road, MN know that it was nothing personal.

Aaaaaaanyway, a press release sent out by Radar Films earlier this week (which we would have brought to you yesterday had CP’s mainframe not imploded) announced that another familiar face to MMA fans would be joining the project as well: former Strikeforce champ and In the Blood star Gina Carano. Carano has been cast as “Vixen”, a fight promoter and “boa constrictor of this fighting jungle” who hopefully wears outfits like this and bites her lip a lot.

More details on the Kickboxer remake (w/relevant gifs) are after the jump.

What Your Favorite Fighter Says About You: 2014 Edition

It’s been quite a while since we first penned our “What Your Favorite Fighter Says About Youlists and a lot has changed in the time since. While some of our choices are even more relevant now than they were when the list was originally published, most of them seem either inaccurate or simply out of date in light of current circumstances. Knowing what we know now, we’ve decided to update our list to align with today’s MMA landscape. Enjoy.

CONOR MCGREGOR

You know a lotta tings and don’t take no shit from nobody. Your style is only outmatched by your swagger, which you often describe as “crisp perfection.” You are either Irish, or tell everyone you know that you are despite being as Irish as the average Redskins fan is Cherokee. While not exactly being a paranoid schizophrenic, you think that everyone else in a given room is either afraid of you or trying to violently harm you. You’re relatively new to MMA and have never actually trained, but your bar brawling expertise has led you to claim that you could defeat any top 5 fighter in your weight class with one good punch. Your favorite flower is the daisy because you can take its head clean off.

Favorite Fight: McGregor vs. Brimage

Scott Coker Denies Rumors That Gina Carano Has Signed With Bellator [UPDATED]

(No man has ever escaped Gina’s mount. Of course, no man has ever *tried* to escape it, but still, that’s an impressive stat. / Photo via Collider)

Yesterday, Bellator middleweight Brian Rogers alerted his friends, fans, and haters that Bellator would be making a “major fight announcement” today. This came on the heels of a rumor-tweet from Hector Castro suggesting that Gina Carano and Marloes Coenen had signed with Bellator. Naturally, we freaked out.

Sadly, the official line from Bellator is that Carano has not signed with the organization. Via Ariel:

Dana White on Gina Carano: “It’s Complicated”

(Gina Carano prepares for a showdown with Ronda Rousey by developing the Rouseybuster Armor MK II. / Photo via Getty)

And no, Dana White is not talking about a Facebook relationship status. He’s referring to Zuffa’s current contract negotiations with Gina Carano, the former “Face of Women’s MMA.”

Not too long ago, White triumphantly announced that the UFC would sign Carano and book her in a fight against UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey. As the old saying goes, be wary of Dana White bearing promises. This boast, like almost every other thing Dana White has ever said since this fateful interview, turned out to be bullshit.

It turns out signing the fighter-turned-actress is harder than Uncle Dana anticipated.

Is MMA About to Enter a New Golden Age?

(Photo via Getty)

By Matt Saccaro

“It’s always darkest before it’s totally black.”-Mao Zedong (supposedly).

This quote aptly described MMA’s immediate future, or at least it seemed to until very recently. Card quality, fan interest, and–most importantly–numbers were all declining; 2014′s PPV buy ceiling of 350,000 was 2009′s floor. MMA was headed for a perplexing time when it was simultaneously bigger than ever but smaller than ever, when the fighters were more talented than ever but less popular than ever.

A series of fortunate events and new found circumstances can change all that. To make a Back to the Future reference, the horrific, Biff Tannen-owned Hill Valley that represented MMA’s future may well become the nice, stable Hill Valley in which George McFly is a successful fiction author and Marty McFly bangs his girlfriend in the back of a pickup truck. That is to say, MMA might be approaching a level of popularity, constancy and quality that many (including myself) didn’t think it was capable of reaching in the current climate.

What’s the reason for this cautious optimism?

#WeekofDanga Caption Contest: Win a Copy of “In the Blood” on DVD!

Many of you newer readers might not know that, long before I was ever a dumb shit douchebag writer hack here, I was just a dumb shit douchebag commenter. You know, in the pre-Facebook times. The long-long ago, as it’s called. In any case, one of my favorite features of the ‘Tato back in the day was their/our caption contests, which have waned off a bit in recent years. So, being that this is the soon-to-be celebrated annually #WeekofDanga, I figured that I might as well revive an old relic as a way to give back to you, our fiercely-loyal-except-when-you-aren’t readers.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much to offer in the way of MMA memorabilia. I do, however, have an extra copy of In the Blood (read our review here) on DVD collecting dust in my room. It’s still in the plastic and everything. So if it’s a physical copy of the movie in which Gina Carano has her underwear ripped off while handcuffed that you’re seeking, join me after the jump to find out how you can win one fo’ free.

Is Rousey vs. Carano a Circus Fight or a Money Fight?

(It’s the “Betty and Veronica” matchup that fight-fans have wanted for centuries.)

By Brian J. D’Souza

What Henry Ford did for the automobile, Ronda Rousey has done for women’s MMA (WMMA), popularizing the sport for mass audiences. Furthermore, Rousey was ranked #29 on the Maxim Hot 100—something Henry Ford never achieved. And Rousey’s stock may be on the upswing with a superfight on the horizon against Gina Carano.

UFC president Dana White continues to affirm that the UFC is negotiating for the services of the original “face of women’s MMA,” Strikeforce and EliteXC veteran Gina Carano:

“[Carano’s] lawyers and our lawyers are talking. It’s moving along. It should [happen],” White said at a UFC 174 pre-fight media scrum.

Between 2006 to 2009, Carano racked up a 7-1 record in MMA, losing only to Cristiane Justino (formerly known as Cris Cyborg). Former Strikeforce featherweight champion Justino poses a much more credible threat to Rousey than Carano ever will. However, it’s Carano’s appeal as a pin-up girl rather than her acumen as a fighter that has the UFC scrambling to reach a deal with Gina Carano’s lawyers.

As Dana White tells it, Carano’s representation is playing hardball. “This guy is a Hollywood lawyer and these guys are always a pain in the ass to deal with,” White said. “The shit that he calls back and says everyday is literally comical.”

Even though Carano is coming off a loss and has been inactive for five years, if a deal with the UFC is reached, she’ll be expected to challenge for the bantamweight strap in her very first UFC fight. That might seem counterintuitive, but Carano is perishable goods likely to have her value spoiled by a loss to a lesser-known fighter.

‘In the Blood’ Fight-Picking Contest: And the Winner Is…

Thanks to everybody who entered last week’s UFC Fight Night 42 fight-picking contest! The competition was tight, but the best prediction came from Scott Sawitz, who had Jon Dodson TKO’ing John Moraga in round 2. (The official stoppage came via doctor’s orders at the end of round 2, but close enough.) Scott, we’ll send out your copy of In the Blood this week.

Honorable mention goes to Evan Zivan, who predicted a Diego Sanchez win by unanimous decision (30-27 x 3), which was pretty close to what happened, due to incompetent and/or corrupt judging. Evan, we’ll send you a five-card pack of UFC Knockout 2014 Trading Cards if you’d like, because Topps sent us a bunch of these things for some reason.

Thanks again, and pick up a DVD copy of In the Blood on Amazon right here.
