Quinton Jackson Smashes Fools in ‘The A-Team’ Trailer + More MMA Fighter Movie News

"You miss me? ‘Cuz I missed yoouuuuuu…"

So says Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the above trailer for The A-Team, which hits theaters this summer with Jackson mean-mugging his way through the B.A. Baracus role. To be honest, we kinda did miss Rampage; it would have been nice to have him in the cage at UFC 108, that’s all. The word on the street is that Jackson will return to the Octagon against Rashad Evans in May. Between beating his felony evading charges, playing one of his childhood heroes in a movie, and having the opportunity to put his fists on an arch-rival, this is shaping up to be a banner year for Jackson. Great to be you, homey.

Speaking of MMA stars on the silver screen…

Hindsight’s a Bitch: Things We Knew For Sure (Until We Didn’t) in 2009

At the beginning of every year there are always nuggets of conventional wisdom that seem absolutely unassailable in January and are laughable by December. This has always been the case, and not just in the world of MMA. For instance, in January of 1941 Pearl Harbor was a nice, calm, wonderfully exotic place for U.S. servicemen to be stationed. By December it was fodder for a horrible Michael Bay movie. Just goes to show that we never know as much as we think we do, though it doesn’t stop us from making definitive statements that will later seem totally ridiculous. Here now are some of the MMA truths that became lies in 2009…

Lyoto Machida is the most boring fighter in the UFC
Lyoto Machida Rashad Evans
At the start of 2009 Machida had finished just two of his last seven fights (one of them a TKO due to exhaustion), and had cemented his reputation as the fighter who was too "elusive" to be interesting. The UFC seemed intent on keeping him away from a title shot, but inked him for a showdown of undefeated Brazilians against Thiago Silva at UFC 94. That’s when "The Dragon" showed his fangs or claws or whatever it is that dragons have, and after knocking out Rashad Evans to claim the light heavyweight title in similarly ferocious fashion a few months later, we were forced to abandon our belief that Machida would forever be MMA’s version of Ambien. Too bad that our revised position didn’t fare much better…

Lyoto Machida is damn near unbeatable
Shogun Rua Lyoto Machida UFC 104
The “Machida Era” was supposed to be a reign as dominant and prolific as that of middleweight champ Anderson Silva, which left many of us scratching our heads when “Shogun” Rua got the nod as his first challenger. Rua was 2-1 in the UFC at that point and he hadn’t beaten anyone even near their prime since leaving Pride. Despite coming in as a heavy underdog, Rua gave Machida all he could handle for five rounds and seemed to be on his way to a decision victory before the judges decided to discount leg kicks altogether. Machida survived with the belt, but not with his aura of invincibility.

Gina Carano has been spending most of her time on a movie set lately, but she took a moment earlier today to make sure that everybody is in the holiday spirit. To be honest, I wasn’t until I saw that picture of Gina Carano. Now I’m ready to put some muhfuckin’ ornaments on a tree, y’feel me? Though Gina has kept quiet about her return to MMA, Scott Coker hopes to see her back in a Strikeforce cage next summer. In the meantime, we have enough MMA sex symbols to keep us busy

Consider Yourself Warned: Cris “Cyborg” Santos May Pose For Playboy

(It’s odd that the smile seems like the most unnatural part of this picture.)

The tasteful pornographers at Playboy have thus far been unsuccessful in trying to convince Gina Carano to take her clothes off and pretend to wash a car, so they’ve gone one step lower.  Or higher, depending on how you think about it.  Cris "Cyborg" Santos says she’s been offered a spot in Playboy’s glossy pages, and she’s considering it.  There’s one thing, though.  As she puts it, "…only one man saw me naked in my entire life and I have to think deeply about that."

One man?  Really?  I don’t know whether to be impressed or concerned.  But regardless, it’s not like she’s got anything any of us haven’t seen before.  Unless she does.  Which would be kind of awesome and possibly scary.

Jared Shaw Emerges From Hiding, Tells Kimbo He Should Have Gone Into Boxing

(Props: MMA Fanhouse)

"Can [Kimbo Slice] be a successful heavyweight? I don’t think so. I think 100% he’s in the wrong weight class, that’s to begin with…But I don’t necessarily think Kimbo can get to 205, at 35 years of age, with the wear and tear. It’s tough to learn this sport, this sport is a lot different than boxing because with boxing you only have to use your hands. In mixed martial arts, you use your hands, your feet, you grapple on the ground, you use submissions. That is a lot of knowledge to retain, and at some point your body starts to shuts down on you in life…Kimbo’s in the wrong sport, there’s no doubt about that. Kimbo should be in boxing…If you want to be the best of the best, if you want to make the most money possible for your family like you say, then you probably should have went to the square-circle."

So says former EliteXC VP Jared "$kala" Shaw, who has now been out of the MMA game for over a year, and recently checked in for an interview with Fanhouse. Despite the criticism of Kimbo’s career choices, Shaw harbors no ill will towards the TUF 10 star, and is proud of the time he spent promoting fighters like Slice, Gina Carano, and Brett Rogers — and if the UFC or Strikeforce wants to give him a job, he’s totally down. It’s a more reflective, slightly-less-cocky version of $kala than we’re used to seeing, even when he’s indirectly taking credit for Gina’s budding movie career. Later in the interview, Shaw tells us that his music is coming along, and he hopes to drop it on us next year. Also, Herschel Walker is a joke, and Bob Arum is an embarassment to the Jewish race. More Gina Carano + Randy’s Cauliflower Ear From ESPN The Magazine’s ‘Body Issue’

Gina Carano ESPN Body Issue MMA
(Props: ESPN the Magazine via MMA Fanhouse)

Now that we’ve seen Gina Carano‘s semi-nudity on the cover of ESPN The Magazine‘s inaugural "Body Issue" (which hits newsstands on Friday, btw), it’s time to take a look at the photos inside. Two more shots have leaked — this sultry photo of Gina posing in her normal workout attire of sports bra, heavy eye-makeup, and hot-shorts, and the picture after the jump of Randy Couture‘s beloved cauliflower ear. (Warning: It’s not quite as sexy.) More naked athletes can be seen here.

Speaking of Gina, director Steven Soderbergh — who cast Carano in the lead role of his next flick, Knockout — had this to say in a recent interview with Empire:

“My feeling was, If I don’t do this, somebody else will. I felt, somebody is going to look at her and go, ‘She should be in a movie!’ And I felt like, Why shouldn’t I be the person saying that?…If you start following the female mma fighters, Gina pops out pretty noticeably. I thought it was a fascinating combination of appearance and activity… I’d been wanting to make a spy action film for a while, but hadn’t really determined what I was going to bring to it that would distinguish it from the traditional approach. Then I thought, ‘Why don’t I just build it around her? She can actually break people in half.’”

Gina Carano Nearly Naked on the Cover of ESPN the Magazine

Gina Carano topless ESPN the Magazine
(Big props: SportsbyBrooks)

When it comes to shooting a magazine cover, it’s all about timing and opportunity.  The photographers for ESPN the Magazine know this, and that’s why they sent their crew to capture a shot of Gina Carano during one of her infamous topless kickboxing sessions (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10-11:30 am. And no, Phil Baroni, for the last time you can’t "sit in").  This photo appears on one of the covers of their forthcoming "Body Issue," and we’re going to go ahead and say that it will definitely outsell the topless Matt Lindland edition at newsstands everywhere.

Now, if you show this picture to your wife and/or girlfriend, she’ll probably waste no time in telling you that there’s been some airbrushing done here.  While that may be the case, we hope you’re smart enough not to respond with what you’re really thinking, which is probably something along the lines of, ‘still…just, wow.’  You said it anyway, didn’t you?  We knew it.  She hit you?  In the throat?  Yeah, well, you had that one coming.

Gina Carano Semi-Nudity to Hit Newsstands on 10/9

Gina Carano sexy weigh-ins

A public service announcement, via MMA Fanhouse:

Gina Carano and Randy Couture will be among the 30 male and female professional athletes posing nude or semi-nude in ESPN The Magazine’s first "Body Issue," which hits newsstands on Oct. 9. Couture’s cauliflower ear will be the focus of his spread and Carano will be posing semi-nude in "The Bodies We Want" photo section.

"You really get an idea of everything these guys and gals go through and the toll it takes sometimes," said Sue Hovey, the executive editor of ESPN The Magazine. "Randy has a very interesting looking ear, known as a cauliflower ear, and I think that when you’ll see it, you’ll realize that this guy goes through a lot to do what he loves."

Major names from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, Nascar, tennis and boxing will also be featured in the special issue, which will be released once a year. And yes, private parts will be strategically covered up.

As CageWriter points out, not all of the athletes in the issue are people you’d necessarily want to see naked. But still, Gina Carano, with strategically covered up private parts. Let’s hope that means lots and lots of hand bra.

Gina Carano (born April 16, 1982) was the first crossover star in women’s mixed martial arts, and was often referred to as "The Face of Women’s MMA." The daughter of Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Glenn Carano, Gina was born near Dallas and raised in Las Vegas, where she went on to study psychology at UNLV. She began her career as a Muay Thai kickboxer before transitioning to MMA, and went on to win her first seven bouts. Her last fight, against Cristiane "Cris Cyborg" Santos in August 2009, was the first women’s bout to headline a major MMA event. Since her TKO loss to Santos, Gina Carano has been focusing on acting, and will soon appear as the lead in Haywire, an action film directed by Steven Soderbergh. Carano also appeared in the Oxygen reality series Fight Girls, and starred as "Crush" in the 2008 reboot of American Gladiators on NBC. Photos from her appearance in ESPN: The Magazine‘s "Body Issue" can be seen here, here, and here.

What Your Favorite MMA Fighter Says About You

If there’s one thing we’ve learned during our travels through this crazy world of mixed martial arts, it’s that you are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. There are only a few different types of MMA fans, and they tend to gravitate towards certain fighters. For example, let’s say your favorite fighter is…

ANDERSON SILVA

(That’s you on the left.)
You are without a doubt the hippest dude you know.  You were the first to start wearing skinny jeans and also the first to stop, proving your bona fides as a trendsetter.  You like to think that you appreciate the finer elements of striking technique more than most MMA fans, but really you just parrot things Joe Rogan has said (“ballet of violence”) while listing off all the ways that Silva is like a modern-day Bruce Lee.  You sometimes wear glasses you don’t really need and you pretend to like jazz.  You think of yourself as a good dancer.
Your favorite fight:
Silva vs. Rich Franklin I

FEDOR EMELIANENKO

You’ve been watching MMA for years, and it’s important to you that people know that.  You have an extensive collection of ironic t-shirts and Pride DVD’s.  You work in the IT department of a moderately-sized company, where you used to feel bad for the people who pester you for help all day because, honestly, how did anyone even get that clueless?  Now you despise them and don’t go to very much trouble to hide it.  You are probably overweight, but you’re quick to tell people that it doesn’t necessarily mean you are out of shape or aren’t a good athlete.  You don’t date much but there’s this girl in Illinois who you have a thing with over the internet, which you refer to as ‘the web.’  Someone in a bar once asked you if you thought Fedor would stand a chance against Brock Lesnar.  You laughed out loud.  Okay, so they were talking to someone else and you overheard them, and when they noticed you laughing you pretended to be coughing, but still.  The ignorance of some people.
Your favorite fight: Fedor vs. Mirko Filipovic

Gina Carano Scores Lead Role in Upcoming Steven Soderbergh Action Flick

Gina Carano MMA hot
(Ready for her close-up. Image courtesy of gina-carano.org.)

According to Variety, Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Oceans 11/12/13, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Out of Sight) has cast MMA starlet Gina Carano in the lead role of his next film. Here’s what we’re dealing with:

Scripted by Lem Dobbs, “Knockout” casts Carano as a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. The film is a closer cousin to “La Femme Nikita” and “Kill Bill” than “Million Dollar Baby,” in that it doesn’t take place in the fight ring. Rather, Soderbergh considers the film as a flat out action film in the James Bond mold, and will shoot in locations around the world that include Ireland, Turkey and the U.S. Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles.

Knockout, which begins production in late January 2010, follows a very busy 2009 for Soderbergh, who released two movies this year: The Girlfriend Experience (which employed a similar bit of stunt-casting with porn-star Sasha Grey in the lead role as a high-end escort) and The Informant!, which comes out later this month.

Though Carano has previously appeared as "Crush" on American Gladiators and made a cameo in the low-budget action flick Blood and Bone, this will be her first role in a high-profile film production. Carano hasn’t yet revealed if she’ll be taking another fight in Strikeforce before the year’s end, so be warned — a long, Cung Le-esque layoff could be in Gina’s future.

Gina Carano Breaks Her Silence

Gina Carano MMA Strikeforce
(Props: ShoSports)

Twelve days after her crushing loss to Cris Cyborg — and subsequent disappearance from the cage — Gina Carano took to her MySpace blog to begin the healing process. Yes, she’s still alive, and yes, she plans on rebounding from the first defeat of her career:

I wanted to take time to collect my thoughts and speak from the heart rather than spew out some cliché anecdote about a tough loss. I know I am a better fighter than the way I performed that night and was heartbroken to not give more to those who have been inspired. However, I find some relief in knowing that this has never been only about me, and now more than ever I feel freedom to learn and grow at my own pace. I make it a point to constantly remind myself throughout this journey who I am, what I am doing, and why. Life is the most amazing gift and I want to live it for the right reasons.

Gina Carano Will Have to Be Consoled By Her Six-Figure Paycheck

During her stint in EliteXC, Gina Carano was paid far less than her value to the company. It’s good to see that’s not the case in Strikeforce — though unfortunately, money doesn’t guarantee victories. MMA Mania passes along the disclosed salary figures for all the fighters who competed at "Carano vs. Cyborg," with Carano and Renato Sobral leading the pack. The numbers are below…

The 10 Most Cursed MMA Events of All Time

If it wasn’t for bad luck, Strikeforce’s upcoming “Carano vs. Cyborg” card wouldn’t have any luck at all. Despite the best intentions, some MMA events are destined to be magnets for injuries, unwelcome surprises, and other bizarre occurrences. But which events have been screwed by fate the hardest? Knock on wood, grab your crotch, and read on…

*****
#10: UFC 67: All Or Nothing, 2/3/07
UFC 67 event poster

The aptly-titled “All or Nothing” event was the first UFC pay-per-view in nearly a year to lack a title fight by the time it finally took place.  That’s all the more disappointing when you consider that it had two a couple months out from the event, pitting TUF “Comeback” winners Matt Serra and Travis Lutter against the champions in their respective weight classes.

The first title fight went down the drain when Georges St. Pierre injured his knee during training and had to put off the fight with Serra (and we all remember how that went when it finally happened).  Fortunately they still had Anderson Silva vs. Travis Lutter to fall back on…right?  Only Lutter failed to make weight for his title shot, downgrading his “Rocky” storyline to a “Bad News Bears” one.  Instead they just had themselves a normal old three-rounder, with Lutter holding his own in the first round before getting triangled/elbowed to death in the second. What fun.

#9: UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida, 5/23/09
UFC 98 Rashad Evans Lyoto Machida MMA poster

The event that famously launched “the Machida Era” only included Lyoto as a last resort. Originally, the card was to be headlined by the heavyweight title scrap between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, until Mir informed the UFC that he was still recovering from knee surgery. The main event was then changed to a light-heavyweight title fight between Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, but Jackson — who had just gone the distance with Keith Jardine two months earlierbowed out due to lingering hand and jaw injuries. And so, the UFC decided to give a well-deserved light-heavyweight title shot to that weird Brazilian guy with the unibrow.

If you’re Rashad Evans, that would be enough to make this one of the unluckiest fight cards ever. But UFC 98’s string of setbacks extended to the supporting cast as well. Josh Koscheck pulled out of the event due to a broken toe and was replaced by Brock Larson; Koscheck’s scheduled opponent, Chris Wilson, missed the show because of incomplete paperwork. James “Born Under a Bad Sign” Irvin suffered one of his many knee injuries and was replaced by Xavier Foupa-Pokam. Yushin Okami also went down with a dodgy knee and was replaced by Chael Sonnen. And finally, hard-luck-case Houston Alexander broke his hand during training and was replaced by Krzysztof Soszynski. Later, it was discovered that the MGM Grand Garden Arena had been built on an Indian burial ground.

Afternoon Video Dump: Tompkins on Vitor Belfort, Machida: The Next Generation + More

(Props: CageWriter)

Believe it or not, Vitor Belfort‘s trainer Shawn Tompkins says that he and Vitor had been pushing for a fight against Fedor Emelianenko three months ago — and now the opportunity may have dropped in their laps. "It’s Vitor’s way of proving that he is the best pound-for-pound champion," says Tompkins of Belfort’s desire to face the Last Emperor. The Xtreme Couture striking coach tries to convince Steve Cofield that going from Jorge Santiago to Fedor Emelianenko isn’t that big of a stylistic change for Vitor, but acknowledges that Fedor probably isn’t too nervous about the last-minute opponent-switch.

Also, fighting Emelianenko is far from a lost cause: "[Fedor's fight against Andrei Arlovski] really showed a lot of the kink in Fedor’s armor. Whether Fedor believes it or not, he doesn’t deal well with speed, and he doesn’t deal well with getting hit…it’s going to be hard to keep up to Vitor’s pace." And as for their previous refusal to take on Gegard Mousasi at light-heavyweight? Tompkins drops some real-talk on us: "What does Mousasi do for us in America? If Affliction sticks around, we’d like to renew our contract with them, but if they don’t, we want to go to the UFC. Beating Mousasi does nothing for us, getting beat by Mousasi…it’s not good for us at all."

I don’t know about this Gina sex tape shit, but I had one of Cyborg Santos on Tivo. It showed Cyborg totally raping the shit out of this little Japanese girl for like nine whole minutes. If you look closely in the background you could see Josh Barnett yelling and cheering. It was fucking sick I tell you. I can’t believe they showed that shit on Showtime. Sad times we live in, sad times.

If you won, please send your name, address, and shirt size to feedback@cagepotato.com. We’ll be passing along your addresses to Mrs. Santos, because she told us she’d really like to visit you guys sometime. How exciting!

ALSO: "Ben vs. Ben" hits the airwaves later today for an encore performance on SIRIUS Fight Club (channel 127, or 104 for XM subscribers), beginning at 6 p.m. ET. Join us as we discuss the major themes coming out of UFC 100′s aftermath, as well as how much Gina Carano’s aforementioned sex tape would be worth to us, hypothetically speaking.

Shawn Tompkins on Kit Cope: “He Just Made a Lot of Great Fighters Angry”

Watch Shawn Tompkins Sounds Off On Kit Cope on RawVegas.tv

Let’s hope this is the last word on the whole Kit Cope/Gina Carano/Xtreme Couture controversy, at least until that sex tape is “stolen” and we all get to see a bored Carano rolling her eyes at the camera while Cope insists on keeping his socks and wristwatch on.  Here Shawn Tompkins makes some excellent points that are fairly obvious but worth repeating, such as: 1) Kit Cope is a nobody, 2) Xtreme Couture fighters regularly kick ass, 3) If the only way you can get your name in the news is to talk about the girl you used to date who is now famous, you’re kind of pathetic.

Nothing we didn’t already know, though you have to like the not-so-veiled threat near the end.  With all the badasses at Xtreme Couture, whether you think they were “made” there or not, it’s maybe not the best idea to bash the gym in public.  Especially if you are a pretty bad MMA fighter, who, according to Sherdog’s Fight Finder, once lost to Tiki Ghosn via TKO (retirement).

Let the Oscar buzz begin…

As promised, here are some of the memorable moments from yesterday’s "Carano vs. Cyborg" press conference in New York. To summarize:

5:14-5:51: Responding to a question about how the fight is being marketed with Gina’s beauty, Cyborg acknowledges that MMA writers have been referring to this fight as "Beauty and the Beast," but that doesn’t bother her because it won’t matter during the fight. Ouch. Sorry, Cris.
