VIDEO: Hermes Franca Is Quickly KTFO’d in First MMA Fight Following Prison and Deportation

(Props: MEIAGUARDA Fortaleza)

Hermes Franca returned to MMA competition last Thursday at Extreme Fighter: Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil, and was smashed in 34 seconds by Marcio Breno. Franca looked rusty for a reason; the former WEC lightweight champion and UFC title contender hadn’t competed in over three years, due to his prison stint for sexually abusing an underage jiu-jitsu student, and his subsequent deportation back to Brazil.

If you’re into karmic justice, watch the video above. Franca swings some decent leg kicks early, but Breno drops him with a right cross at the video’s 1:47 mark and bounces his head off the canvas a few times with shots from above, causing the ref to jump in. Eventually, Franca makes it back to his feet and the crowd chants something at the 2:20-2:32 mark. (Are they saying “Hermes”? And if so, are they doing it sarcastically? I can’t tell.)

Releated thought: This list from 2008 has become woefully outdated in the year 2014. Most of those guys would be off the list due to inactivity. New version to come soon…

Hermes Franca Deported to Brazil After Serving Sentence for Sexual Abuse

Back in May 2011, UFC veteran Hermes Franca was arrested and charged with seven counts of sexual abuse in the first degree and two counts of unlawful sexual penetration in the second degree, after allegedly molesting one of his own jiu-jitsu students, who was under the age of 14. After posting a vague letter on the UG in which he claimed that his party lifestyle had led him to “failing as a husband, a father, a dreamer,” Franca pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful penetration and one count of first-degree sexual abuse, and was sentenced to 42 months in prison in January 2012.

After serving a little over two years of his sentence in Oregon, Franca was released from prison last month and immediately handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Though Franca had been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. since 2007, an immigration judge ruled on March 19th that Franca should be removed from the country. On Tuesday, Franca was escorted back to Brazil on a commercial flight, accompanied by a federal official.

Franca’s original sentence included four-and-a-half years of post-prison supervision, and the requirement to register as a sex offender. Being expelled from America gets him off the hook for that stuff, but the good news is, his career is over, he’ll be treated as a social pariah for the rest of his life, and we’ll never have to look at his stupid goddamned hair again.

CagePotato Roundtable #22: What Was the Worst UFC Title Fight of all Time?

(It’s not a UFC fight, but you can’t talk awful title fights without at least referencing Sonnen vs. Filho II. Photo courtesy of Sherdog.)

Today we’re talking about bad UFC title fights – fights that fizzled out after weeks of hype, bored even the most die-hard fans among us, and left us baffled that the winner was considered the best in his weight class. Since we’re dealing strictly with UFC title fights, notable clunkers like Ruiz vs. Southworth II (Strikeforce), Wiuff vs. Tuchscherer (YAMMA), and Sonnen vs. Filho II (WEC) are ineligible for inclusion. Also, we promise that the only appearance of the name “Ben Askren” in this column lies in this incredibly forced sentence. Read on for our picks, and please, pretty please, send your ideas for future Roundtable topics to tips@cagepotato.com.

Detroit is known by many names – Motown, Motor City, and Hockey Town to name a few. None of which lend to the idea that the birthplace of the assembly line was also a mecca of mixed martial arts or a place to catch great fights on Saturday. Unfortunately, UFC didn’t care; they took the show to the Great Lakes State in 1996 for UFC 9: Clash of the Titans 2 nonetheless. Ken Shamrock and Michigan native Dan Severn were set to face off for the first world title outside of Japan, the UFC Superfight championship. However, thanks to Senator John McCain, instead seeing an exciting rematch that was sure to cover the canvas in bad blood, fans in attendance and at home watching on PPV were treated to what became known as “The Detroit Dance.” And to this day, it is regarded as one of the worst fights in the history of the sport.

Sean Sherk Hoping for Spring Return; Anticipates Three or Four More Fights Before Retiring

(“As soon as I get this pesky bleeding stopped, I’ll return to the cage.”)

Sean Sherk was on MMAJunkie Radio on Monday and the 38-year-old former UFC lightweight champ revealed that he only has a handful of fights left in him.

“I want to fight again. I’m a fighter. At this point in time, do I plan on fighting five or six more times? Probably not, to be honest with you. That’s why I want big fights. I want co-main-event or main-event type fights that are going to cement my place in the UFC Hall of Fame,” Sherk says. “Absolutely, I think at this point in time, I’ve done enough to be a hall of famer, but I’d like a few more fights to make my mark.”

(“I am ashamed to admit that along the way I lost sight of what is truly important [in] life.”)

After being arrested last month for multiple counts of sexual abuse and unlawful sexual penetration on a victim under the age of 14, former UFC lightweight Hermes Franca has been cooling in Clackamas County Jail in Oregon City, Oregon, awaiting his July 12th trial date. Yesterday, he posted a letter on the UG in which he reflected on his life, and expressed regret about the way he sometimes lived it. Check it out:

Hello,

This is not a statement regarding my current legal situation. On these matters I must trust I God and the United States Judicial System. I believe that in time the truth will prevail, as it always does. I am releasing this statement to assure you all that I am safe! With peace and serenity in my heart I write these words:

In the year 2000 I arrived in the United States with $300, spoke very little English and had a dream bigger than most.

Over the past decade I have had an “unbelievable” life, and “unbelievable” MMA career. God has granted me the privilege of traveling to many beautiful places, meeting numerous wonderful people and I have personally witnessed dreams come true… My Dreams! I tell you the truth when I say, I am blessed!

Kenny Florian and Tyson Griffin Are Headin’ Down to Featherweight

Kenny Florian Roger Huerta UFC photos MMA

(They can beat up pretty-boys and clowns, but how will Florian and Griffin do against the featherweight elite?)

Now that the UFC has a 145-pound division, it was only a matter of time before a few lightweight contenders decided to chase the belt where the competition’s a little smaller. The biggest name so far is Kenny Florian, who told ESPN.com yesterday that he’s taking himself out of the lightweight mix to try his hand at featherweight:

“I started playing around with the idea: could I make 145? Originally, I didn’t think it was possible,” Florian said. “I spoke with a few nutritionists, got their opinions, told them what my body fat was, my walking-around weight, all that stuff and the general consensus was that it was very possible…[The UFC] is very supportive. They’re very excited about the move…My goal is to get the 145-pound belt, and then go up to 155 and challenge for that belt as well.”

Some Shady Sh*t Went Down in Costa Rica at the XVT 5 Show Last Weekend

(Video courtesy Sherdog)

I don’t know what the hell it is lately with shady MMA promoters screwing fighters, but it looks like these leeches are bound and bet to add some black marks on an overall otherwise decent year for the sport before the clock ticks out for 2010.

By now we’ve all heard about some of of the crazy shit that went down at the Nemesis Fighting show in Dominican Republic earlier this month where fighters didn’t get paid and the promoter tried to high tail it out of Dodge before they realized the checks he wrote them were rubber. The latest on that story is that former bounty hunter Keith Jardine, who was one of the fighters who got stiffed has hooked up with the U.S. Secret Service to remedy the situation. We’ll have one of the fighters who nearly didn’t make it out of Dominican alive, Chris McNally on tomorrow’s The Bum Rush Radio Show to tell another crazy story from the event.

Well, it looks like another promoter has tried to pull a fast one on another UFC veteran, only this time it isn’t money that was stolen, it was a championship belt.
