Don Frye on Pills, Booze

DF1

If you haven’t been keeping up with Don Frye’s advice column on IFL.tv, you’re missing out on the collected wisdom of a man who’s seen it all. The former coach of the Tuscon Scorpions and one-half of the greatest brawl in history, Frye dishes out more sage words in the new installment of “Dear Don,” including this bit of his advice to a reader who thinks he may be developing a Vicodin addiction:

Here’s the hard truth: life is pain. There’s no pill that can take that away without taking something else away in the process. What you need to do is decide what level of pain you can live with, and then ease off the pills.

Let me tell you, when I wake up in the morning I’m pretty much always in pain. Most mornings I feel like I got shot out of a cannon. Other mornings it’s really bad. You just have to learn to live with it. Try easing off from Vicodin to Advil. Tequila don’t hurt, either.

In other words, if you can buy it at a convenience store, it ain’t no goddamned addiction.

Also, if you have a Magnum P.I.-caliber mustache, you can get away with ridiculous pre-fight staredowns like this. Eskimo kisses!

Send Questions, Get Fedor Emelianenko DVD

CH1

On Thursday morning, I’ll have a chance to meet undefeated IFL lightweight contender/poster-boy Chris Horodecki. Time is limited, so I won’t be able to conduct my usual six-and-a-half-hour interview. Thus, I need your help, CagePotato readers. Post some brilliant questions for Chris in the comments section; if I dig yours, you just might see the answer on this very website. The best question wins a copy of the Absolute Fedor DVD that’s been collecting dust on my desk since the M-1 Global press conference. You have your instructions — now make me proud.

Thanksgiving Leftovers

If you were avoiding computers and televisions as much as I was since Wednesday, you may also be unaware of the following:

Josh Koscheck has been scheduled to fight at UFC 82 (which, as previously reported, will be headlined by a championship match between Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson). Koscheck’s last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 74 in August. Though follow welterweight contender/American Kickboxing Academy teammate Jon Fitch is also scheduled to be on the UFC 82 card, the two are not expected to face each other.

— Matt Arroyo and George Sotiropoulos advanced to the semi-finals on The Ultimate Fighter, sending home Troy Mandaloniz and Richie Hightower, both via armbar. Matt Serra’s retarded logic principles prevented him from cornering his fighters during the matches, but he showed up to beat Hughes in the coaches’ challenge, out-bowling his rival in the final frame. In a heartbreaking display, Mandaloniz broke down in tears before his fight, then marched out to the ring wearing a t-shirt that said “I CAN”; unfortunately, he couldn’t. Richie shaved off his stupid mall-punk hair, and looked surprisingly tough in his match with George; instead of sobbing in his bunk bed a la John Kolosci, Richie actually looked encouraged after his loss. On the next episode, Ben Saunders takes on Tommy Speer, and a prank goes too far!

— Four bouts were made official for the TUF finale’s undercard.

— The IFL World Grand Prix Finals on 12/29 will air live on HDNet, as part of a new agreement that will have HDNet broadcasting IFL events starting next year.

— Chuck Liddell filmed this ridiculous/brilliant commercial for Dell:

Tim Kennedy to Replace Sean Salmon at HDNet Fights

Salmon

As you may have already heard/seen, Sean Salmon found himself on the wrong end of a brutal flying-knee knockout at last week’s Strikeforce middleweight tournament. Though he denied reports that he had a seizure in the ring, Salmon was given a 45-day medical suspension after the fight, making him ineligible for a scheduled match against Jason “Mayhem” Miller at the HDNet Fights “Reckless Abandon” (!) event on December 15.

Taking Salmon’s place is Tim Kennedy, a member of the IFL’s Chicago Red Bears who previously defeated Miller at an Extreme Challenge event in 2003. Kennedy is scheduled to fight in the IFL World Grand Prix only two weeks later, so let’s hope he isn’t slapped with a medical suspension himself.

The “Reckless Abandon” card also features Frank Trigg vs. Edwin Dewees, Yves Edwards vs. Alonzo Martinez, and Pete Spratt vs. Tristan Yunker. Our best wishes go out to Sean Salmon, who should really learn how to protect his head

Daily Leftovers…

— Dana White and Randy Couture have a dinner date on Tuesday to discuss Couture’s future with the UFC.

— Kimbo Slice says he will likely fight at EliteXC’s next event, which takes place in February. Though it’s mentioned nowhere in the story, MMAFightline uses its headline to throw in a completely unfounded rumor about Tank Abbott. That’s what we like to call “aggressive journalism.”

HDNet Fights’ next event will be on December 15th in Dallas. The 10-fight card — named “Reckless Abandon” (!) — will feature bouts between Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Sean Salmon, and Frank Trigg against Edwin Dewees.

— Carlos Newton and Maurice Smith are out as IFL coaches.

— The first date on Amy Winehouse’s new tour didn’t go so well.

IFL Teams Up With YouTube and Google Ads For eDomination

BasIFL

The International Fight League announced today that it has formed a video sharing partnership with YouTube and Google AdSense that would deliver IFL content — including full-length fights — to thousands of websites around the world that use AdSense and YouTube players (including YouTube itself, obvi). Though YouTube has had similar partnerships with the NBA and NHL, this is the first video sharing deal it has struck with an MMA organization. The arrangement also includes a revenue sharing model that would allow the IFL to generate income from advertisements shown with its videos. According to the press release:

Horodecki Remains Undefeated with IFL World Grand Prix Split Decision

MMA wunderkind Chris Horodecki tacked another win onto his unbeaten record on Saturday with a split-decision over Bart Palaszewski at the IFL’s World Grand Prix. Horodecki came out strong in the first round, hammering Palaszewski with sharp combinations and briefly knocking him to the mat, but the second frame was all Palaszewski, who dominated his younger opponent with ground-and-pound and a guillotine choke attempt that Horodecki managed to slip out of. This was the decisive final round:

It was the second time the two lightweights faced off in the IFL, the second time that Horodecki walked away with a close decision, and the second time that Palaszewski wasn’t happy about the result. (“I have no idea what I could have done to win a decision against Chris,” he said. “He looks like he was in a car wreck and I look fine.”)

IFL World Grand Prix To Be Broadcast On Network TV

The International Fight League’s World Grand Prix goes down tomorrow in Hoffman Estates, IL, showcasing the top four fighters from their lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions, as well as a championship bout between the two best light heavies, Vladdy Matyushenko and Alex Schoenauer. MyNetworkTV will broadcast the first hour of the card live beginning at 8 p.m. CST.

The two fights that are guaranteed to go down in that hour are the light heavyweight match, and a lightweight meeting between undefeated 20-year-old Chris Horodecki of the L.A. Anacondas and Bart Palaszewski of Pat Miletich’s Quad City Silverbacks. Horodecki and Palaszewski fought earlier this year at an IFL event, with Horodecki eking out a split decision despite being dominated by the Silverback in the first round:

Weigh-ins are today at, of all places, B-Dubs. CagePotato strongly recommends the cheeseburger dippers, pulled pork sandwich and Blazin’ sauce.
