Watch This: The Emotional Aftermath of Rose Namajunas vs. Tecia Torres

(Props: Invicta Fighting Championships via @ekc)

It’s agitating, it gets under my skin. I know that there’s stuff that I could have done, but in the end I wouldn’t take it back for nothin’ because I felt like I was fighting for my life…but that’s the price that you pay if you don’t finish it, and I didn’t finish it. And after this fight I realized like, you only got you and that’s it, and…if you go to decision, it’s gonna be luck. You’re rolling the dice with the judges, and I’m not gonna let that happen again.”

So says a crestfallen Rose Namajunas, following her tough decision loss to Tecia Torres at Invicta FC 6. Though her stellar performance wasn’t enough to convince the judges to give her the win, Namajunas vs. Torres was easily one of the greatest WMMA fights of 2013. Hell, we were just proud to be part of her sports bra.

The latest “All Angles” video from Invicta manages to recap a night’s worth of emotional content into four minutes of behind-the-scenes gold, including the tense moments before the fight, highlights from the battle itself, Rose’s bummed-out post-fight monologue, and finally some incredible footage of Torres breaking down in tears while talking to her mom on the phone afterwards.

Watch it. Seriously.

In Case You Missed It: “Cyborg” Smashes Coenen, Torres Edges Out “Thug” Rose at Invicta FC 6 [VIDEOS]

(Cris Cyborg vs. Marloes Coenen II. Video via FancyMojo420)

As was written so aptly this past weekend on these pages, the women folk on Saturday’s Invicta FC 6 card were some bad mofo’s. Most of the attention was given to the main event title fight (above) rematch between “Cris Cyborg” Santos and Marloes Coenen but we’ve got much love for everyone else on the card as well, especially our very own “Thug” Rose Namajunas.

For the second time in her career, Coenen showed that she can last longer than most women against Santos, but once again, she took a bad beating and a loss at the hands of the “Cyborg.” Namajunas faced the tough Tecia Torres and lost a hard-fought decision that got the main card off to an explosive start.

Both bouts were entertaining and give enough argument on their own that women’s MMA deserves our collective attention. Check out the main event above and Namajunas vs. Torres after the jump and see what we mean.

Invicta FC 6: Some of These Other Chicks Are Hella Scary Too Tho

Invicta continues to impress with good matchmaking and stellar action in its latest card, and for the first time, Invicta is available widely through pay per view, leaving behind any old issues with UStream. Apparently this is the first all-female MMA pay per view, so it’s a historic night, and the fights delivered, as usual.

Since I’ve already effectively spoiled the main event for you, why not follow along as I talk out loud about how cool the show was and which ladies be scary.

CagePotato’s Professional Gangsta “Thug” Rose Namajunas was glorious in defeat last night, putting on a highly entertaining bout with Tecia Torres that was an early pick for Fight of the Night.  Namajunas looked for a flying armbar, but I guess Torres had heard something about it.

Also, Thug Rose gives zero fucks about your stupid resets, Big John:

Cris Cyborg Reclaims Title as “World’s Scariest Woman” (Also, a Belt. ADORBZ)

“It’s like they sized it just for me!”  PicProps:  Ester Lin / InvictFC

Cris Cyborg reclaimed her place on the throne as #1 Woman in the World You Definitely Do Not Want to Fuck With (plus Invicta’s featherweight championship or whatever) with a methodical four-round thrashing of Forever #2 Marloes Coenen.  Coenen was seen as the most legitimate challenger for Cyborg at 145 (in fairness, 145 is a division that could charitably be compared to a blasted desert), and Cyborg goes and does this shit:

Jesus Christ man, Cyborg is throwing Coenen around like she’s Lexington Steele FFS.

[UPDATED] Invicta FC 6 Weigh-In Drama: Von Plettenberg Comes in Eight Pounds Over, Rothenhausler Reportedly Hospitalized After Weight Cut

(Photo by Esther Lin for Invicta FC)

Let’s start with the good news: Marloes Coenen, Cris Cyborg, Rose Namajunas, and every other Invicta FC 6 main-card fighter successfully made weight today at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. The only slight hiccup was when Jessica Penne initially weighed in at 106.1 for her atomweight bout against Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc. Penne was able to shave off that last tenth-pound without issue.

The prelims, however, were a friggin’ nightmare. We’ll go from most crazy to least crazy:

- Featherweight knockout-machine Veronica Rothenhausler has been pulled from the event after being declared medically unfit to compete. According to reports on the scene, Rothenhausler passed out due to a bad weight cut and had to be hospitalized. Needless to say, her fight against Mollie Estes was canceled. Get well soon, Veronica.

- Former strawweight Livia Von Plettenberg’s attempt to drop down to atomweight was botched to a Anthony Johnson-esque degree. Von Plettenberg weighed in at 113 pounds for her 105-pound contest against Cassie Robb, and since there was no way she’d be able to drop seven pounds on short notice, that fight has been removed from the card as well. Cripes. Will Invicta have to pull random women from the crowd in order to fill out the lineup? Because I’d totally watch that. UPDATE: Kathina “Kill Switch” Catron has stepped in on a day’s notice to fight Von Plettenberg at 125 pounds.

Before she returns to the cage at Invicta FC 6 on Saturday night, our favorite strawweight Rose Namajunas — a.k.a., The Honey Badger — took some time to answer a few questions submitted by the Potato Nation. Must-See Video: ‘Road to Coenen vs. Cyborg’ Traces the History, Rivalry of Two WMMA Legends

(Props: YouTube.com/InvictaFC)

Rose Namajunas isn’t the only reason to stay home and watch Invicta FC 6 on Saturday night. The 13-fight card features a generous lineup of entertaining scrappers, and will be headlined by the biggest women’s MMA matchup you’ll find outside of the UFC — Cris Cyborg vs. Marloes Coenen, throwing down for Invicta’s inaugural featherweight title.

The ladies have some history, to put it mildly. In January 2010, Cyborg and Coenen faced off for the Strikeforce women’s featherweight title, with Cyborg winning by third-round TKO. Despite getting bombed out for the majority of the fight, Coenen maintains that the match was stopped early; Cyborg credits the Dutchwoman’s “balls” for wanting a rematch, considering all the abuse she took. And of course, both fighters carry the weight of their pasts into the cage, from Coenen’s status as a living legend, to Cyborg’s rise (and temporary fall) as one of the best-known stars in WMMA.

If you need further convincing that this match is worth your time, check out this new “Road to Coenen vs. Cyborg” preview video from Invicta FC, directed and edited by E. Casey Leydon — who you may know as the genius auteur behind that War MMA behind-the-scenes video — and co-produced by AllElbows*, which manages to cram all these themes (along with some very badass training footage) into a highly watchable 13 minutes. Special appearance by Ben Fowlkes!

* AE photographer Esther Lin also gets a music credit at the end. Goodness, this lady can do it all.

Invicta FC 6 THUGBLOG: How Is Rose Namajunas Like a Honey Badger? Let Her Count the Ways…

(Ew, and she eats snakes??” / Photo by Jade Kimmel for WMMARoundup)

CagePotato sponsored fighter “Thug” Rose Namajunas will be returning to action this Saturday at Invicta FC 6: Coenen vs. Cyborg (Ameristar Casino Hotel; Kansas City, MO), where she’ll be taking on undefeated strawweight Tecia Torres. Now making her final preparations for the fight, Rose has written a guest-blog for us about her spirit animal. Check it out below, follow her on twitter at @RoseNamajunas, and stay tuned for our video Q&A where she answers your burning questions. Good luck, Thug!

By Rose Namajunas

Back in my amateur days, Kaitlin Young once told me I reminded her of a honey badger. We’ve all seen that fabulous video of the Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger and if you haven’t you need to!

I was very honored to be associated with such a creature being a nature/animal lover and especially coming from such a talented fighter like Kaitlin Young. I definitely saw what she was getting at. However, thinking back on it there are a lot more similarities between the honey badger and I than I was aware of at the time.

The honey badger at first glance doesn’t look like much and can be very easily underestimated. Its small stature being very misleading is something I relate to all too well. Even those who are somewhat aware still have no idea. They can’t! There isn’t enough imagination one can have that can fathom my capabilities. I don’t exactly look like Brock Lesnar or anything!

The honey badger is strong, tireless, and impenetrable. However, I don’t believe its strength or endurance comes from physical ability more than it comes from its “don’t give a ____” mentality. It is the honey badger state of mind that allows it to attack any animal regardless of size or whatever disadvantage it faces. To this day I have always been matched up with people who have either a size advantage or are more experienced. I rise to any challenge and conquer. While others are surprised, to me it is what I deal with daily in practice. I stand my ground and fight, breaking the limitations others have placed on me.
