Fallout: Risk Versus Reward For Shevchenko And Cerrone In Denver

Conor McGregor talked a metric ton of trash over the weekend which is pretty interesting stuff to dissect. But while all his talk may be interesting there are still some interesting topics to tackle as far as this past weekend’s fights are concerned. The main and co-main event of UFC Denver saw a pretty dominating victory and an unforeseen upset cap off a night of fairly entertaining fights. Valentina Shevchenko and Jorge Masvidal left the event in considerably higher standings than when they first arrived in Colorado.

UFC Denver: Shevchenko vs Pena Will Be Controlled Chaos

The main event of UFC on Fox 23 features two of the most ferocious women in the bantamweight division as Valentina Shevchenko squares off against Julianna Pena. Both women have built up quite the resume with Shevchenko having defeated former bantam weight champion Holly Holm and Pena out dueling Cat Zingano. These two women are both extremely talented with their own specific roads to victory. Who gets the job done at UFC Denver?

Nasty, Testicle-Obliterating Details Emerge From Julianna Pena’s Barroom Brawl Arrest

(Don’t make Julianna angry. Your balls wouldn’t like Julianna when she’s angry. via Pena’s Instagram)

They say that Christmas is the time of giving, and for the most part, it’s a motto that most of us try to live by when the holidays come around. Take TUF 18 winner Julianna Pena, for instance, who seemed to be in a giving mood while hanging out with bantamweight Josh Gow outside a bar in Spokane, Washington over the weekend. Unfortunately for the recipients of her generosity, the things she was giving out were hellacious, manhood-obliterating kicks to the groin.

As such, Pena was hauled in by Spokane PD, and the nasty details regarding her arrest have started to leak.

Julianna Pena Out of UFC 171 After Suffering ‘Gruesome’ Knee Injury

(The knee can be a cruel mistress. One day you’re provocatively bending it against a pole, without a care in the world. And the next day…betrayal. / Photo via Julianna’s Facebook page)

TUF 18 winner Julianna Pena was scheduled to fight Jessica Andrade at UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler in March — but it looks like the Venezuelan Vixen won’t be fighting anyone for a long, long time. According to a report yesterday evening from MMAFighting.com, Pena suffered a “gruesome injury to her right knee” during a grappling session on Monday, “damaging her ACL, MCL, LCL and meniscus.” Yep, I think that covers everything.

Pena is scheduled to undergo surgery next week, and doctors have already assured her that her knee will return to full strength following surgery and rehab. Not that it’s any consolation to UFC president Dana White, who was pissed last night:

UFC 171 Adds Julianna Pena vs. Jessica Andrade, Kelvin Gastelum vs. Rick Story, Jimy Hettes vs. Dennis Bermudez

The UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler card is filling up fast, Nation, and has recently added a pair of intriguing bouts featuring TUF winners as well as matchup between top featherweights. Let’s get right to it…

Julianna Pena vs. Jessica Andrade

“The Venezuelan Vixen” may not have made many friends in the TUF household (which we imagine she wasn’t there to do in the first place), but her performances in the octagon spoke for themselves. With stoppage victories over Shayna Baszler (rear-naked choke), Sarah Moras (guillotine) and Jessica Rakoczy (TKO), Pena is riding high on momentum at the moment, and she’ll need plenty of it against Jessica Andrade.

Currently 10-3 and 1-1 in the octagon, Andrade is submission specialist who has tangled with the likes of Liz Carmouche, Rosi Sexton and Jennifer Maia. She has only been the distance twice in her professional career, and while the holes in her wrestling game were exposed by Carmouche at UFC on FOX 8, she should easily make for the toughest test of the TUF winner’s career come March 15th.

TUF 18 Finale Results — Diaz Smashes Maynard in First Round

(“Alright boys, this one’s for all the marbles. Well, maybe not *all* the marbles, but some of the marbles. There will definitely be marbles involved, that much I can promise you.” Photo via MMAJunkie)

After three months of an Ultimate Fighter season that we lost interest in around episode 10, we’re finally at the finish line. Tonight’s TUF 18 Finale card in Las Vegas is headlined by a quasi-rubber-match between Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz — assuming that Nate’s high school reunion doesn’t run late. But the rest of the lineup shouldn’t be overlooked. For one thing, the main card is 60% female, which is unprecedented for the UFC, and the winner of the women’s bantamweight final could theoretically wind up fighting her own TUF coach in the not-so-distant future.

Handling our liveblog of the FOX Sports 1 main card is Matt Kaplan, who will be sticking round-by-round results after the jump beginning at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. Refresh the page every few minutes for all the latest, and shoot us your thoughts in the comments section.

TUF 18 Finale Lineup Complete With Pena vs. Rakoczy, Modafferi vs. Pennington + More

(Jessica Rakoczy vs. Raquel Pennington full fight video, via TheUltimateFighterFX)

Assuming you had better things to do on Wednesday night, you probably missed the 13th and final episode of The Ultimate Fighter 18, in which Team Rousey dark horse Jessica Rakoczy fought through an injured shoulder to win a unanimous decision over Team Tate’s Raquel Pennington. (Now everybody pat Jared on the back for calling it.) Rakoczy, who came into this season with a rather stinky professional record of 1-3, now heads into the TUF 18 Finals against Julianna Pena. New prediction: Bruce Buffer will announce Rakoczy’s record as “4-3,” including her exhibition bouts on the show. Call it a hunch.

After Wednesday’s episode aired, the UFC released the full fight lineup for this Saturday’s TUF 18 Finale. Headlined by the lightweight grudge match between Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard, the main card will kick off with two bouts between female TUF 18 castmembers, including the Happy friggin’ Warrior herself. None of TUF 18‘s male castmembers made the cut, besides Chris Holdsworth and David Grant in the men’s final. Harsh, but fair, considering how badly some of these dudes embarrassed themselves.

Check out the full TUF 18 Finale lineup after the jump, and come back to CagePotato.com tomorrow night at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT for our liveblog of the main card.
