[VIDEO] Former Boxing Champion Ricardo Mayorga Wins (?) MMA Debut

Ten years ago, Nicauraguan boxer Ricardo Mayorga made headlines with two surprising wins over Vernon Forrest and his unique brand of arrogance complete with trash talk and post-fight, in-ring cigarette smoking. As most all champions eventually do, however, Mayorga would go on to lose and lose frequently.

He was in wars, got beat up and stayed probably boxed on for longer than was healthy. And then, he started talking shit about MMA and picking (verbally, at least) fights with its competitors. There was the Din Thomas fight that never happened and lots of ignorant talk before and after the non-event from Mayorga.

Well, the boxer finally got his MMA bout in yesterday and it was a strange one. Through two rounds, Mayorga got taken down, mounted and controlled easily. However, after defending a triangle choke attempt from his opponent, Mayorga landed a nice lil knee to his foe’s back that – by the guy’s reaction – must have been a dim mak or something.

Bellator 69 Weigh-Ins: Maiquel Falcao Picks a Bad Time to Miss Weight [UPDATED]

(Props: TheFightNerd)

Bellator has already proven that they have a zero-tolerance policy for tournament competitors missing weight, and this afternoon, Maiquel Falcao put himself in danger of being the second finalist to be disqualified this season.

During the weigh-ins for tomorrow’s Bellator 69 event at L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Falcao punished the scales at 188 pounds, three above his middleweight limit. He has been given two hours to sweat off the excess; if he doesn’t make it happen, his opponent Andreas Spang could win the Season Six Middleweight Tournament by default, earning a title shot against a cardboard cutout of Hector Lombard. Cross your fingers for a good result, because these two really need to squash their beefUPDATE: Falcao made weight on his second attempt.

In other Bellator weigh-in news, two undercard fighters also came in heavy on their first attempts, and welterweight semifinalist Karl Amoussou made opponent David Rickels his bitch during the staredown. You can see a GIF of that rather embarrassing moment after the jump, along with complete weigh-in results from Bellator 69, which will also feature a 115-pound women’s match between Megumi Fujii and Jessica Aguilar.

Rumble Johnson Misses Weight, Let Me Tell You How You’re Feeling Right Now

Totally Looks Like:  Sean Kingston

By now, you’ve probably heard the big news of the day:  Anthony “Hey Yo, Is That My Tummy Rumblin’?” Johnson missed weight today in historic fashion, tipping the scales at 197 pounds.  According to some research that I absolutely did not just do, twelve pounds is the most that anyone has ever blown weight anywhere ever, and you can feel free to correct me in the comments.  Vitor Belfort has agreed to fight a catchweight at 197, but has asked that Johnson weigh-in again tomorrow at no more than 205.

Now, maybe I’m not shocked by this — but damn brotato, how do you miss — how do you go UP a weight class because you have a nightmare cut at 170 and the boss has said you belong at 185, then proceed to bulk up like you got a call from Vince McMahon?

Serious question: is Anthony Johnson dyslexic with numbers or something?  Just checking.

Video: UFC 140 Weigh-Ins

(Video courtesy of YouTube/UFC)

The weigh-ins for UFC 140 took place in Toronto this afternoon. Unfortunately, we forgot to set our watches to Canadian time, so you’ll have to settle for watching the video after the fact.

Only one fighter didn’t make weight, and since our headline spoils the surprise, you’ve probably figured out it was Dennis Hallman, who was 3.5 lbs over the 155-pound lightweight limit. He decided not to make a second attempt, which is unusual considering how close he was and will instead pay opponent John Makdessi 20 percentof his purse. By our estimation, this is “Superman’s” second strike, so if he doesn’t beat Makdessi, we may him get Miguel Torres’ed tomorrow night.

For those of you who can’t watch the vid at work, the full results are after the jump.

*UPDATED* Paul Daley is Just F*cking With Us Now

(Video courtesy of YouTube/CharlesFightTime)

Either Paul Daley is getting sick of the constant ribbing he’s taken over the past few years about missing weight a handful of times and has decided to pay back the MMA media by throwing sending them into a tizzy, or the British welterweight has jumped up a weight class between bouts. Our money is on the former.

“Semtex” told reporters yesterday during an open media workout in Montreal that he had just over 24 hours to drop 40 pounds to make the 170-pound limit for his Ringside bout against Luigi Fioravanti. For those keeping score, most fighters drop between five and 12 pounds the week of the fight, but 40 is pretty much unheard of the day before an event, unless you’re Anthony Johnson.

When asked how he planned on dropping such an immense amount of mass, he deadpanned:

“A lot of shitting, a lot of sitting in a hot bath and a lot of saunaing, and not eating anything. I might even have to chop something off that weighs a lot. We’ll just leave it at that and we’ll move swiftly on.”

To add fuel to his story, Daley posted the following photo on his Facebook page of what he planned to eat after today’s weigh-ins:

Shocking News Week Continues: Paul Daley Misses Weight at BAMMA 7

“Missed it by this much.

Put on your surprised face, kids:  Paul Daley stepped on the scales just minutes ago for his welterweight contest this weekend at BAMMA 7, and was recorded six pounds over the 170 pound limit.  He has been given two hours to sweat out the remaining pounds.  His opponent, Jordan Radev, came in at 170 on the first try.

At this point, Paul Daley making weight the first try would be more of a story, as this now makes the sixth time (by our count) that Semtex has tipped the scales in his own favor.

CagePotato Stats: The MMA Weigh-In Failure Leaderboard

(The moral of the story? When Gina Carano does it, it’s awesome. When Paulo Filho does it, it’s terrible. / Photo courtesy of CombatLifestyle.com
)

Anybody can be forgiven for missing weight by a half-pound — as long as it doesn’t become a habit. But when an MMA fighter comes in a full four pounds heavy, as Efrain Escudero did this week for his doomed UFC Fight Night 22 bout against Charles Oliveira, it tends to raise some eyebrows. As we’ve done previously with steroid busts, we decided to catalog the worst scale-fails in MMA history, arranged by number of pounds over the limit. When the information was available, we also listed the punishments the fighters were given, along with their excuses for missing weight, which range from injuries to salt water to the dreaded “menstrual period.” This is by no means a definitive list — but we’d like it be, eventually. So if you know of any other occasions where fighters missed weight by four pounds or more, or missed weight for multiple fights, please let us know in the comments section.

* Note: We’ve eliminated the “Repeat Offenders” section. In the instances where fighters has notably missed weight on more than one occasion (see: A. Johnson, P. Daley, T. Alves), we’ve ranked them in the leaderboard by their greatest weigh-in failure.

Karl Knothe @ Shark Fights 17
Weigh-in date: 7/14/11
Weight: 253.75 pounds, 23.75 over the 230-pound catchweight limit
How is that even possible? Due to some miscommunication between Knothe and his management, Knothe was never informed that his scheduled bout against Ricco Rodriguez was supposed to be at a catchweight, instead of at heavyweight.
Result: The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation disallowed Knothe from competing due to the large weight-gap and concerns over excessive weight-cutting. Knothe was paid a portion of his salary anyway, while Ricco Rodriguez instead faced 5-12 replacement Doug Williams. Rodriguez won via rear-naked choke in the first round.

Ricardo Mayorga @ Omega MMA: Battle of the Americas
Weigh-in date: 5/2/13
Weight: 175.9 pounds, 20.9 pounds over the limit for his contracted lightweight match against Wesley Tiffer, who came in at 153. Needlessly to say, shoving ensued.
How was this fight even allowed to happen?: The match took place in Managua, Nicaragua — which is Mayorga’s hometown, by the way — and the Nicaraguan combat sports commission that was overseeing the event didn’t seem to have a problem with the ludicrous weight discrepancy. (I hear they’re much more stringent when it comes to cock-fighting.)
Result: Mayorga by TKO after two rounds, aided by a fairly illegal knee to the spine. Stay classy, Ricardo.
